exuse my ignorance but how are windsprints done??

Depends what you mean by windsprint. My research tells me that intervals between 20 seconds and 45 seconds or so are best for fat loss and muscle retention. I´ve put this into practice and it worked well for me.

It´s commonly called interval training. The point is to get your heart rate at a base level of 60% of max(a brisk walk does it for me) and then move it to around 85% through a windsprint interval(running very fast if you´re using running as a medium). From what I understand, after the windsprint you have to allow your heart rate to get back to 60% for the training to be effictive.

I just started this again yesterday after a power cycle and it took me around 5 minutes to get back down to 60% after the interval, which is quite long for me. The point is, start slow. It may not feel like a lot of work but it is hard on your body. Also helps to avoid shin splint, if that´s a problem for you.

aurelius. It seems from my knowledge that you are indeed talking about interval training. The difference in windsprints is to go back to the medium pace and force your body to recuperate from the sprint (even though you are "winded") while not resting as you might do in interval training.

Use a treadmill for an example:
Windsprints:
Run at 7mph, go up to 10 or 11mph for 20-40sec and go back to 7mph and try and recuperate. (they say the recuperation is what makes this a great technique)

as opposed to interval training:

Run at 7mph, go up to 10 or 11 and then go to a lower speed, 5 or 6mph to allow your body to rest so you can do it again.

BUMP for any other thoughts.

PS I have seen good results from windsprints.

windsprints

How I trained it came down to a 100m sprint as hard as you can walk a 100m then sprint. do this as many time as you can giving full effort, trust me this shit sucks but works great. this is how we learned to run in football so we wouldn't get tired running people down 20yards or so. A lot of people do shorter distances too.

I´m not actually "resting" after my interval, still walking briskly and keeping my heart rate well above resting rate. My body is still forced to recuperate at a brisk walk. Perhaps some can keep running at a slow pace after the interval.
