Events for North America's Strongest Man released

I hate deadlift for reps. It is an event where I can give it everything I have and have NOTHING left for anything else...except an injury...

B-fold,

Why do you suppose that so many of the events in recent years have seemed to be "hard Cardio" for lack of a better term rather than pure power events?

By hard cardio, I am referring to doing a certain weight on a lift for most reps, rather than just going for the highest weight for one rep. And I throw in there all the carry and drag, and loading in the hard cardio category.

Just an observation from a fan, but it seemed like back in the older days, there were at least a few more events, like the flintstone deadlift, and the press behind the neck with the flintstone bar, and platform squatting, that were more pure power events. Any thoughts on the new trend?

Also, I notice that nobody bends bars anymore? Is this because of pec tears? Seems like they used to keep bending bars till they got to one thick enough that only one guy could bend it, and called him winner for the event.

benchmonster,

As far as the max effort events...it is just not really a fun thing to watch. The average spectator likes to yell and count while the competitor does their reps. It is much more exciting to the fans. It also cuts down on the contest time too. If 75 competitors all get 3 attempts...rather than one all out attempt...it takes forever!!! At nationals last year we had the following for events:

log press (max weight, 3 attempts)
firetruck harness pull
atlas stones
super yoke
silver dollar deadlift (max weight, 3 attempts)

They had the stone throw for max distance in there, but threw it out the day of the contest. Even with throwing it out and only 45 competitors...it took 12 hours to run a contest. It took us 4 hours to run 75 competitors in Boston this year.

So much of strongman is being able to push through that mental pain barrier...and drive hard...and never quit. It is a lot of fun to watch someone grind out that last few inches on the sled drag...like watching Rudy kill himself and be killed in the movie.

At the STL contest I did this year, I got 10 reps with a 240 log. The next closest in my class was 4 reps. Some of them didn't get a single. For some people...they ARE going heavy.

Where Is this going to take place, I'm into power lifting hardcore and wonder if could take in an event? if its near me. You know be one of those worthless guys that counts from the sidelines.
How bout a place and time,... if there posted somewhere.

St. Louis, October 5th 2002. They are working on a deal with the Holiday Inn Express rigth now...should be final by next week.

That makes a lot of sense B-fold. I had not considered the time factor nor the fact that people like to count along.

I assure you a 240 lb overhead lift would be heavy for me, too.
As I have a tiny bit of explosiveness, and no endurance, though, I will always be partial to pure strength events.

Go get um, big fella, we are all rooting for you.

I like the heavy events also. I don't like puking after a high cardo event...lol

I will be in STL for a pro contest next week. They are competing on Thursday and Saturday...you interested???

I think I am helping the Omega Force to a demonstration at a church (Kaz will be there too) on Wednesday night.
