ephedrine safety...my two cents...

After Wheeler (the college football safety) died recently during training camp, there were rumors that it was caused by him taking Ultimate Orange (a ephedrine based supplement)......this caused some paranoia...

well here's a view point....
Wheeler had ashma, and he took it before a training camp football session in the 90 degree summer heat in which he was wearing 25+ pounds of pads....

As a former football player, and a user of ephedrine based products, i must say that he was extremely stupid.....a person with his condition should have never been taking an ephedrine product, especially before a football practice in the heat of summer.....this is probably the very best example of how ephedrine can be dangerous....when a person such as Wheeler is stupid enough to use it under the circumstances....it's like drinking and driving......

In sum, while ephedrine products must be respected and used with caution, they are safe if used properly, and if you do not have any medical conditions that it could complicate.

According to the media releases that I've read, the medical examiner had said the cause of wheeler's death to be an asthma attack. How is this anyway related to ephedrine? Wouldn't ephedrine aid in preventing an asthma attack?...its sold as a bronchodilator. Futhermore, if I remember correctly, the media releases were not even sure if wheeler had been using ephedra. The label on kaizens ephedrine says "
Do not use this product unless a diagnosis of asthma has been made by a doctor."

I have to agree with you on people abusing a product.
A lot of things are banned in Canada because people abuse it, like 4 pills work ok but i bet 8 pills work better. Dam just follow the instructions.

But i haven't been watching to much TV because of all the Food AD's and i don't know much about what took place.

Seems to be some conflict in the story. As chillin said, ephedrine should have reduced his chances of asthma, not increased it. Unless he had been using the stuff chronically and in high doses in which case he may have severely down-regulated the beta receptors necessary for the drug to exert it's therapeutic effect against asthma. This in itself shouldn't cause asthma, but it can make an acute asthma attack more difficult to treat. The other possibility is that he used an ephedrine formulation that had aspirin in it and he happened to be a salicylate sensitive asthmatic. Now that would be really dumb!
