E-commerce websites

Does anyone have experience setting up and running an e-commerce website? Who provides the best service? Which way would you go? I have a product that I wish to market, but would like to process sales via webstore only. Any responses will be greatly appreciated.

Why only online?

I hope you didn't get involved in an MLM (which is all over the freaking web anymore).

I know many peeps that thought they had a GREAT idea/product, thought they would buy the dotcom name, get an ecommerce account and open up the window and watch all the money fly in. Didn't happen like that for ANYONE...

How you going to reach your market? What are you going to do in the way of advertising/driving traffic to your site? Who will handle customer service on your end? You thinking about doing this fulltime or as a parttime gig until it generates enough income for you to quit your *day job"?

First off, I really appreciate you taking the time to pose the tough questions that I need to have asked.

My reason for taking only online orders is to pass the cost savings of not having a call center on to the customer. This is a solo business venture. No MLM or hocus pocus at all. I do not expect the money to fly in my window either.

My major advertising focus will be via nationwide radio advertising. All customer service and emails will be handled by me, along with the packaging and shipping of the focus product. I will not quit the day job until the business becomes too much to handle along with the job.

Thanks again for the questions. They really forced me to consider some things that I hadn't, thought of in my little "dream bubble".

I appreciate you not feeling defensive and understanding that I am trying to help you. :)

Would it be ok to ask what your product is? I mean, you don't have to give specific info but are we talking self-help DVD's, or some kitchen gadget, or supplement of some sort?

You've obviously looked into the cost of the advertising as you were very specific about what sort you would do. May I ask what lead you to choose this advertising option?

I am also assuming that you have an online store, e-merchant account set up and functional? You also got the business license in order (ie LLC or sole propietor, etc... benefits/drawbacks to each). Depending on the product I am assuming that you've got the numbers in front of you as to how much of the product you need to buy from the manufacterur (size of batch), price for corresponding number of containers, labels (stick on or laser), if you need any sort of licensing/FDA approval, etc, what sort of liability insurance do you have (I assume you've got all of this factored into overhead), where will you store this stuff until it is ready to be shipped? Is your product subject to spoilage? Is your mark-up enough to make a profit after operational overhead and other such expenses? Is it too high that your product won't sell out of the starting gate?

And what will you do to stimulate business if the radio advertising doesn't do what you think it will do initially?

So many minute variables that peeps don't realize goes into such a venture until they are balls deep...

It's a supplement, of course. I think you already guessed that though. Not a typical b.s. weight loss supplement or anything like that. This is really in the infancy stages as I have just filed my DBA paperwork and have to wait a bit before I really start rolling. Minimum buys on my supplement are very small, and I don't have to hold much inventory at all.

I'm mainly looking to see if anyone has had any experience with Yahoo's ecommerce solutions, or anything similar to that.
