Dynamic/ME carryover...

b fold the truth

Ok...this may be a stupid question here...but I'll try to ask anyway.

I have no idea what my max squat might be...NONE. I haven't done a max squat in years. My training focuses on speed work, ME gm's/deads, and event training.

Is there any way to guage someone's approximate squat by their dynamic work? Just a thought.

b, I honestly dont think there is a way to guage it from DE SQ's!
DE lifts are like 50-65% of your max, so possibly you can say that if your squats for DE have good speed, then maybe you can double that weight as a max.
However, IMHO i would not feel comfortable doing that and would instead do it the easy and the sure way .... DO A FULL MAX SQ!!!Unless your competing in the next few weeks or so, or cant for some other reason, I would just work up to a max single, or at least a good heavy single 90% or so.... Then you will know for sure where you are at....

b fold....

you need to be careful. i think doing speed without max effort will cause your body to de-train its ability to move the big iron.

if i were you, i would take some semi-heavy lifts after speed. i think westside does that. i do that almost every week after speed. in order not to get overtrained, be sure you are using bands and chains and keeping things mixed up. you obviously cant take a max single every week on straight squats.

if you take a max and find that it is far below what you expect, don't worry... it will come up fast. i know some people that use the speed stuff just to stay in shape and let some aching tendons heal. when they need to get strong again, it comes back in a hurry. when i tore my pec, i couldnt do heavy squats for a long while cause it put a lot of strain on my side, but i religiously did speed weight. when i started going heavy again, it came back fast.

as i said in an earlier post, you can do other things besides squat to keep a big squat..... good mornings from chains are an excellent example. they keep my body trained to go heavy.

good luck!

Actually...using a max on the squat really does not do anything for my contest prep. I compete in strongman and train by doing the following:

Sunday ME lower and events (includes overhead log press for 1RM)

Wednesday: DE lower

Friday: DE upper

I do GM's or pulls on ME lower day. Just trying to get an idea. I did box squats with 275 plus heavy and medium bands for 8 sets of 2 with 45 sec rest...with no support gear at all yesterday. Check out the link in my beginning post. Rough band tension of 600-625 at the top.

It felt super explosive...just curious what you guys used.

How intense should your DE days be?
