Drinks other than water

I'm new to this whole dieting and working out thing but have been doing it for a little more than a week. About an hour in the gym everyday and eating healthy.. but I have two questions. I come from a huge Pepsi addiction and I never really drank water regularly so to me it just doesn't taste good. I am however drinking about 4-6 20oz bottles of water per day right now and would like to know what drinks you guys usually have with a meal? Since most of the drinks I am used to are incredibly horrible for you, I'd like some ideas.. juices? Anything other than water really. Is milk bad for you? I love 2% milk and have been having a glass with dinner every night but I have seen a couple posts with people saying its bad... Also, is coffee with 1 tsp. of sugar going to put me back a lot with this new lifestyle? Going in to 4 hour meetings at 8AM with no coffee would crush me lol.. so I"m hoping you guys say this is ok (only 1 cup!).

Someone suggested Whey. In your opinion should I be drinking a whey shake to substitute a meal (I work out after work and right before dinner)? Or is it not even necessary to drink this at this point in my process?

Current stats: 282lbs (it fluctuates between 2-6lbs everyday, is that normal?), 6'4", 25 years old. Currently working on 40-45 min of Cardio and 15-20 minutes of weights.

Thanks!

I have 3 choices for ya.

1. WATER
2. WATER
3. WATER

Suck it up and keep drinking water and soon you will not want anything else! You can add some sugar free Crystal Light to it for some flavor if you have to.

Diluted Diet Brisk ice tea. 12oz can mixed with 12-16oz water.
Only way I could stay hydrated when I was "ON".

have a glass of apple juice or orange juice..
once in a while I drink a soda but I dont much care for soda..

i like the sugar free arizona green tea but i have maybe 1 glass a day. as with the milk its not a big deal if you drink it if your aware of the calories that come with it. if your trying to hit a certain number of calories milk can be a easy way to change that quickly.

I hear those crystal light packets are good for when on a diet, 0 cals.

Walmart sells these sugar free packets for 20oz waters..tons of flavors, 10 for $1.50, I am addicted to these things, sometimes I feel like I am drinking too much water..haha

You drink black coffee but would it be horrible with 1 tsp of sugar? Would it set you back?

Sometimes I don't have time for breakfast.. do you guys recommend Whey as a replacement for my weight loss plan? Not sure how bad it is for you or if it's only for when I've already lost the weight...

Thanks for the ideas!

fixed for ya!!!!

j/k, i've actually started black coffee and getting use to it.

i use crystal light and love it. i usually put 1/2 a packet in a 16oz bottle that way i don't use it so fast. Shit is almost addicting :p

Tea is better for you than water.
Easier on your stomach than coffee (and has less caffeine per cup).
It also has more antioxidants than coffee (stronger antioxidants as well).

I've had some badass Rooibos ("red tea"). Its from Africa.
It's not actually a tea, its a TISANE (non-tea tea).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tisane

Plus tea gets you high, check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theanine

I quit drinking all the diet pops with Aspartame when I found out it breaks down to FORMALDEHYDE in your body (a proven carcinogen). I still drink soft drinks with Splenda though. Pibb Zero, Coke Zero, Pepsi One are all fire. I try to avoid all pop these days because the acid eats your teeth and stomach lining whether its diet or not.

Crystal Light and pop with Citric Acid (think lemon-lime flavored ones) actually eat your teeth even faster than the phosphoric acid in most soft drinks. Plus too much citric acid can trick your body into having a reaction like the drink actually contained sugar.

I'd say if you're gonna be strict about your drinks, stick with water, unsweetened tea, tisanes, coffee w/sugar-free creamer (black coffee is SICK), and protein shakes (whey & water).

If you're going to drink alcohol, stick with red wine. 1-2 beers may be beneficial, any more and you're getting extra cals PLUS ESTROGENIC effects (from the hops/barley).
Rumor has it there are about to be some gluten-free beers hitting the US market soon (made from sorghum). It's already selling like hotcakes in Africa & a few other places.

Note: Adding milk/dairy products to tea will GREATLY diminish the beneficial effects as casein bonds most of the antioxidants. Green Tea is loaded with EGCG.
Black Tea is loaded with a different class of Catechins and a small amount of EGCG.
White tea is healthier than all other forms of tea because its the least processed.

Anyone know where to get bulk theanine?

mmmm...i have to have it every sunday
I use splenda
once a week its ok right?
splenda= The FDA's "final rule" report says that 11% to 27% of sucralose is absorbed in humans and the Japanese food sanitation council says as much as 40% is absorbed.

Its gives a much higher insulin spike then people think.

I drink about 3 black coffees a day some times so I can not put anything in it. Plus again I like it. I think you will be fine with once a week though.

I tried drinking black coffee and it wasn't very good lol. I think the 1 8oz cup of coffee with 1 tsp of sugar will have to be my cheat food because I can't keep my eyes open in these meetings all morning..

And no one answered the Whey question.. I'm just starting this weight loss diet/plan. Most mornings I'm rushed on the way out and it's hard to grab breakfast.. is it a good idea to use a Whey shake as breakfast? Or is that supposed to be used as a pre/post workout shake?

Thanks for all your replies!

And those Crystal Light packs are freaking great! Too bad I can't find the Iced Tea ones anywhere.

water, skim milk, diet coke (1-2 cans a day, the two meals I eat out, I eat 6-8 times a day, so stfu), Arnold Palmer Light (50/50 diet lemonade and iced tea), crushed ice (I have a few shakes a day).

Diet coke still has High Fructose Corn Syrup..Diet Pepsi does not.

I got some great ideas from you guys, thanks!

I just have one other question and that is the whole Whey protein shake thing.. I've only been working out for about 2 weeks now so I haven't really lost any weight yet (it fluctuates between 286lbs and 279lbs everyday, is that normal?) but am only eating healthy now and am doing a low-calorie diet. Is it a good idea to take a whey shake as my breakfast? Or is Whey used when you've already lost a lot of weight to try and build muscle? I'm new to all this so I want to do it right with your help. Thanks!

you need to assess how many calories it takes for you to maintain (not gain or lose) and then cut that down by 10-20% to and lose about 1lb a week. you should start at 3000k/cals.. something like 300g of protein, the rest of it mostly carbs or mostly fat, don't combine the two in meals.. weigh yourself one time a day, when you wake up and empty out your bladder is great.. you will always weigh a few lbs more at the end of the day 3-5 is normal..

you can use a whey shake to replace a meal or two a day, or to provide a little extra food for you.. i don't mix fat with carbs in any meal except breakfast.. so breakfast for me is usually steak&eggs, toast, pancakes, butter, fruit preserves, a bowl of fruit, and a glass or 3 of milk. the rest of my meals which come around every 2-3hrs consist of fat+protein or carbs+protein..
