Diet Doctor Robert Atkins Suffers Head Injuries in Fall
The Associated Press
Published: Apr 9, 2003
NEW YORK (AP) - Low-carbohydrate diet promoter Dr. Robert Atkins was hospitalized Wednesday with severe head injuries after falling on an icy sidewalk, his spokesman said.
Atkins, 72, slipped and fell during Tuesday's snowstorm outside the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine, spokesman Richard Rothstein said.
"He was negotiating the snow and ice and failed in that negotiation," Rothstein said.
A colleague rushed Atkins to New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for severe head trauma, Rothstein said.
The extent of Atkins' impairment was unknown, he said.
"He's in recovery now, and the doctors are telling us that it will be a day or two days or three days before we have the answers to these questions," Rothstein said.
Atkins is the author of the best-selling "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution."

I feel bad for Atkins, really all that he did was steal competitive BB
dieting and market it fof the rest of the population.

Talk about plagerism!

Dr. Atkins has ONLY been promoting 'The Atkins Diet' PUBLICLY now for around 30 years. I guess Dr. Atkins stole it from Arnold S. back in the 70's and Dr. Atkins NEVER bothered to do ANY research on his own right? He's only made it this far by stealing other's intellect correct? GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!!!

Do half of the people here on Elitelfitness just shoot their mouths off without even FIRST thinking or researching a topic before making themselves look incredibly stupid?

Also, why would anyone comment negatively and make fun of Dr. Atkins' injury? You are some very insensitve FUCKS! He nearly SINGLEHANDEDLY revolutionized dieting for the masses. The BB community would never have been vindicated on its own without all of Dr. Atkin's research. Dr. Atkins faced ridicule and scorn by nearly every one of his peers until the last few years, yet he plugged on because he KNEW he was right. Even the ULTIMATE skeptics Consumer Reports gave his diet a 'good' review and acknowledged how effective it was not only in weight loss, but in lowering BP, Cholesterol, and various other health/risk factors.

He's dieting's answer to BB's Dan Duchaine.

I consider Dr. Atkins one of the great men of the 20th Century!

it's unfortunate but true. every year more and more idiots join and the intelligent folks find someplace else to post

Good points chakarov.

As soon as I read those first couple of posts I myself was getting ready to say "guys, Atkins started this crap in the 70s! There are some bodybuilders (and plenty of dieticians) who still believe Atkins cannot work.

You also pointed out his similarities to Duchaine in his corresponding field, and there are many including his willingness to go out on a limb. But it goes even deeper than that! Duchaine's Body Opus is partly inspired by the Atkins diet, and as if I remember correctly, Duchaine flat out said it was!

Sure, Atkins sometimes gets a little weird with his "witch doctory" stuff, like all these little micro-nutrient schemes, but the point is he saw something that very, very few in his profession saw and that is that a low carb diet may be the answer for some people.

Sure, he has always felt the low carb diet is the answer for everyone. Well, he does have some point in that it is amazing- when talking about people who are still overweight after trying conventional diets- to look at the phenomenal success rate of going low carb.

Is is the answer for bodybuilders? I don't know. But he has certainly given us the confidence many of us need to reduce carbs when we diet. If we only listened to the "traditional" nutritionists we'd all be filling up on spaghetti and living off 90 grams of protein a day come diet time! We'd be afraid to eat a diet with over 10% fat!

I guess I would like to explain my position more clearly. My post was so short that I probably came off in a really negative way which wasn't MY intent.

First I hope Dr Atkins' gets well soon.

Second of all I own two of Dr. Atkins books. I think he has gone far to explain the scientific benefits of the low carb approach.

Third. In my post I was agreeing "some what" with what Zoomster stated. What I was feeling inside when I wrote it was that bodybuilders and others never seem to get the credit they deserve for their part in the low carb dieting approach. Obviously, it was Dr Atkins who was one of the instrumental people in showing the science behind the low carb approach. To that I applaud him. He wrote one of the leading books in this field, he put the ideas in a solid book format for main stream publication, etc.

Here is maybe why I am confused....."The high protein low-carb diet for weight loss was first popular in the United States as early as 1860" (Reference Arnold Schwarzenegger's orginal Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, page 683).

Also, since this is one of the first bodybuilding books I ever owned I begin to read about the old timers diets. I have read in old muscle mags and biographies that some of the bodybuilders of the 50's and 60's use to incorporate a low carb approach before a contest. So, I thought low carb dieting had been around a while.

I guess I typed to fast without giving more thought to Dr Atkins accident and how important his book was.
