Does eating a clean diet make you build muscle faster? Or is it the same as a regular High Protein Diet with X amount of bad fats and sugary carbs, just with out the fat gain?
It may I guess if it improves insulin sensitivity, nutrition partitioning, although these effects may take a while to become relevant from healthy eating.
Certain nutrients/foods are associated with increased testosterone too (cholestoral from eggs; zinc; ICQ from cruciferous veggies; certain if not all fats)
What good is it to workout if you don't reap the health benefits as well?
Eating a nutritious diet helps ensure you live a long life, and the nutrients in fruits and vegetables help to maintain your immune system, speed recovery, etc. If you catch a bad cold when your immune system is weakened, you'll likely lose a pound or two and probably won't want to go to the gym.
I hate to disagree with the 3 healthy replies above.
But if muscle size and strength is your priority, then a high protein / high calorie diet will deliver - regardless of micro nutrient quality.
Like Dan Duchaine said in his Underground Steroid Handbook "Don't feel quilty about eating a Big Mac. Feel quilty that you didn't eat two, with a large order of fries".
Dan didn't live to see 50 - but then longivity wasn't part of the question.
