Diet really not that important?

I was reading the 5x5 program, and i noticed in one section that it said that caloric excess is a must, and you can eat kfc or anything you want as long as you get the calories you need. He said that diet isn't as important when bulking as it is when it's cutting. When i say he i mean Madcow who i think wrote the program. So is this really true that i can eat mcdonalds or anything i want while on this program?
 
If you want to bulk clean then YES it is very important.

If you just want to get big fast you still don't want to rob your body of nutrients by eating nothing but high calorie junk. Keeping it within reason will make it easier on you come time to cut.

It doesn't say you have to eat like that all the time. He says it's better to eat Mcdonalds or KFC than nothing at all. It's hard to get in 4000 clean calories a day so he says it's alright to eat out every now and then to keep them high and your appetite up. Just don't become a fatass! When i'm bulking i just make sure i get as much protein in for the day and eat basically what i want. Not donuts and crap but pizza, burritos, steaks. I judge everything on my abs. If i can't see them when i flex then i slow down on the fatty foods.
