Deadly Ignorance!!

So.. lately i've been doing some research about AS... I posted a thread about it in the HIV board, being that its a question reguarding cancer and anabolic use, and thought i might find some helpful insight there, since AS are also used to treat cancer patiets similarly as they are in treating HIV patients... I also made the BIG MISTAKE of posting some of my inquiries on a cancer board... thinking i might encounter someone in a similar situation as me, or someone who might have some information to offer. BOY WAS I WRONG!! i am saddened by the ignorance i found... this is part of what one member posted, in reference to my question..

Hi SheHulk. Are you referring to anabolic steroids such as those used to bulk up muscles in weight-training and lifting? If so, I don't think that type of steroid is used for cancer treatment, but it's use may contribute to cancer formation. Remember Lyle Alzedo (sp?), the pro-football player? He died a few years ago of a malignant brain tumor which was brought on by his use of anabolic steroids to bulk up. Personally, I think AS's are very dangerous in other ways too. They can cause rage problems and general change in personality as well. We hear periodically of some high school or college athlete who has commited a crime of assault or murder who has been on AS's which has contributed to their rage. Best be careful if you are using them with your work-outs. Two of my sons are personal trainers and will not recommend AS's to their clients. If they find that a client is using AS's, they discontinue their training relationship with that person. There are too many risks.

I responded letting her know how incorrect she was on soooo many different levels. Steroids cause tumors?? If that were the case, they would NOT be given to HIV/AIDS patients who have compromised immune systems, and cancer patients who are wasting away. Many times AS are given to increase apetite, enhance quality of life, allow them to prevent muscle wasting, etc.
Because someone with HIV, or cancer, already has a weakened immune system making them High Risk for anyother type of cancer or disease. So if AS caused tumors, ALL cancer/HIV patients would quickly be growing tumors left and right. is this the case? NO, in fact, quite the opposite... they benefit from AS greatly. I know I have personally...

In 1998 I endured a life saving Bone Marrow Transplant. This procedure was the only hope i had for cure, after having CML (Chronic Mylogenous Leukemia). During my treatment and recovery... I was given steroids, as well as HGH. These were given to help my immune system recover, and stimulated the growth of Leukocytes... good 'fighter' white cells i needed to fight 'bad' residual leukemic cells still around. So anabolics may be very beneficial to 'some' people... again, not ALL. This ignorant woman could be discouraging a sick person out there, who could benefit from such medications greatly... when it comes to such serious life threatning illness, we must keep an open mind, and try ALL options offering potential benefits, IMO.

Case studies have even shown that anavar can be beneficial to the immune system, and improve liver functions...

It just makes me sad to see that ignorance in cases as these can be deadly. And countless people would be able to enjoy happier healthier lives if they only had an open mind.

So true in so many ways. :( Hopefully people will also get to read more accurate & truthful information from you & other sources & consider that the "masses" & popular opinion aren't always accurate.

Isn't it true though that if you already have a tumor, HGH will make it grow faster & more?

Lyle Alzedo got that tumor from using gh that was made from cadavers, that nasty gh im pretty sure was why he got the tumor…I think lots of people who used it were getting jacobs crucifels (I forget the actual name) disease from the GH.

Also another not to talked about fact was lyle had AIDS or atleast was rumored to have….my Dad is friends with some ex-pro football players and when I asked if steroids killed Lyle, one guy said “sucking too much dick is what killed Lyle”.

Gh will make tumors grow yes,. That’s a fact…it can and has also mad dormant tumors “alive”..in my case, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer at the age of 27…my urologist who is top in his field has NEVER in his 35+ yrs of practicing seen anyone my age with bladder cancer..he couldn’t explain it…he mentioned 2 things that could have caused it one ones certain form of dyes and I “think” he said pesticides..(cough DNP cough), which I have used before…. And I didn’t tell him of my steroid use and my 3 week use of gh ( that’s all I could handle, the carpel tunell and painful pumps and water retention was too much for me so I stopped it after 3 weeks of 4iu a day 5 days on 2 days off) im sure if he knew aboutt eh gh he would have said it caused it. I did though tell my dr who like ive mentiond before is one of ronnie colemans dr and flex wheeler as well as many top NPC guys….he told me steroids and especially trenbolone (fina) have powerful growth factors that can and have caused dormant cancer tumors to become “active” and the gh wof course he said could have been the facto as well, but no one really knows.

As far as immune system and juice, only a few have immune enhancing properties, one being deca, but not at the astronomcal doses bodybuilders take…theirs no immune enhancing effect of taking 1500mg of deca and 1500mg of test stacked together… if you want to learn more about AIDS and steroids I get his newsletter called medibolics, atleast I used to, I think Michael Mooney is one of the writers and they have great info in there, I think www.medibolics.com is the web site. I think hes written once about how tylenol is more liver toxic than anadrol.

One of the main reasons AIDS patients take AAS is for the lean muscle gains, not because it enhances the immune system…they take other “cocktails” and tons of specific nutrional supplements and other drugs to help thir health..at the doses they take their immune systems are not comprimised for the most part so don’t take AIDs patients as examples of how AAS can enhance the immune system.

Here is an article from that site on female aids patiens and AAS:

Anabolic steroids are synthetic versions of the male hormone testosterone,
that promote the formation of lean body mass, skeletal muscle, and masculine
sexual characteristics in the body. Anabolic steroids have been shown to
increase muscle mass, and so may be used to treat AIDS wasting and weight
loss. However, most studies have investigated their use in men, and in
comparison, the use of anabolic steroids in the treatment of HIV-positive
women is much less well understood.

Although testosterone is considered a male hormone, it also occurs naturally
in women, but at lower levels. A study investigating the use of testosterone
patches in women with AIDS wasting found weight and quality of life improved
in some women, and the development of masculine , or virilising , features,
such as hair growth, or a coarsening of the voice, was not reported.

At February s 8 th Annual Retroviruses Conference in Chicago, Dr Kath
Mulligan reported results from ACTG 329, a clinical trial of an anabolic
steroid, nandrolone decanoate, in HIV-positive women diagnosed with wasting.

Nandrolone is approved in the US for treatment of men and women with anaemia
associated with chronic kidney disease, where it has been shown to increase
lean body mass. It has also been found to increase lean body mass in
open-label studies involving HIV-positive men.

38 women were randomized to receive either twelve weeks treatment with
placebo or with nandrolone, dosed 100mg once every two weeks by
injection into muscle. For the next twelve weeks, everyone in the
study received nandrolone, with a follow-up assessment at 36 weeks.

Participants:

* had involuntary weight loss of at least 5% in the past year, or a body
mass index below 20kg per metre squared

* had been on stable anti-HIV therapy for at least 30 days

* and were consuming more than 80% of their resting energy requirement.

During the blinded phase, there was a significant increase in weight and
lean body mass in the women receiving nandrolone compared to placebo. In the
open-label phase, women who had previously received placebo, gained weight
and lean body mass, and women who had previously received nandrolone
sustained their gains. Women had not been offered advice on exercise, and
this was not investigated in this study.

Side-effects were rare, but occurred primarily in the nandrolone group (and
included hoarseness, hirsutism, and clitoral enlargement). These were not
considered severe, and were found to resolve off treatment.

A separate study investigating the use of low dose testosterone in
HIV-positive women is ongoing in the US.

There are also TONS of references to AAS and immune enhancement, but I have NO idea what the doses were so I cannot comment on that until I see the doses, but im sure they are NO where near the amount bodybuilders take.

yes, GH makes tumors grow...but in my case i didnt have a tumor, i had leukemia... it is typically given after severe chemotherapy, readiation, and/or post bone marrow transplant. The medications given to 'wipe out' the cancerous cells, are SOOO toxic, they leave your immune system depleted of not only the cancerous cells, but also the good cells you need to survive everyday lift. GH is given to severly neutrapenic patients, with dangerously low White blood counts.. GH stimulates the growth of these cells... gives your immune system a 'boost'. if it weren't for that, something as simple as a cold could kill you..

i just thought it was soo sad that that lady, without experiencing first hand, could just say something like that. completley bashing AS without thinking of the possible benefits some might have from them.

What if this had happend 3 yrs ago, after my transplant... during the time i was on lots of GH and some steroids even, to help me recover... if i would've read a response like that, i might have gotten scared and declined to continue treatment, thinking if i continued i would become a murderer with liver tumors! and then i wouldn't be here today.
