Deadlift grips

Just curious about the grips you guys are using. Lately ive been using an overhand grip with stiff leg deads but not for regular dead cuz I cant hold the weight. But I heard that deads are good for the bis too. Will an underhand grip help them more? Just curious.

i use an overhand grip for heavy deads...my rists are beaten up.
i switch underhand one hand overhand other hand for stait leg deads.

understand this the extra mass on your bi's is not only comming from the dead movement, but the post GH that is released in your body durring heavy stress movements.

on heavy deads i need straps, i go overhand but due to tiny hand i need straps...i do 350 for reps

How much can you handle without straps. With overhand past 275-300 I cant hold it overhand for more than 4 or five reps but for a heavy workout I Ill do about 4x10,6,4,2 or failure at around 275,325,350-370,390-410. I use one hand over and one under and alternate hands. Dont like using straps. Cuz my grips ok (i think) but for arm size is not good (bad genetics).

If you use the over/under grip then the bar can't roll out of your hands and you can lift much more. With just a little chalk I've gone sets of 5 on 500lbs, triples on 525, and even did a few single max lifts with no grip problems.

Here's something you might want to try intead of straps. Use a hooked grip. Hook your thumb under your index finger and middle finger. It hurts, but it allows you to have a stonger grip on heavy weights.

You can also do it by hooking your thumb OVER your fingers. This doesn't hurt as much, but also doesn't strenghten your grip as much as putting your thumb under your fingers.

If you have to use an overhand grip i was going to suggest what Skizac said. It does hurt and i do not knwo people personally who use this grip in comp but i know there are some that do use it. It hurts at first but like anything you get used to it. Its basically the grip that olympic lifters use. Basically while your sitting at the computer reading this make a fist but have your thumb inside your fist, that is how you grab th ebar. Index over your thumb.

I have to try thatt grip...

I did deads last week for 15 reps at 225 but at 275 i lost the grip after 8 I was thinking about buying some wraps cause the weight isn't a problem, I mean If I did 225 15x for a medium warmup i should get 275 for at least 10. When you put your thumb under your index,is it in the position of one hand under and one over, or does it not matter???

No the thumb under the index is for a double overhand grip. But fellows why you need to do this is beyond me. An alternative grip is strong and with chalk is Very strong. YOu will not build one side better then the other , but if you feel that is why you need to do this then change sides every set. Left hand under , right hand over. That will insure your grip to last through the set. If your not power;lifting and grip isnt an issue use wraps on your double over hand grip. I will tell ya now , your short changing all your gains that deadlifts will give you, if you let your grip determine when your set is over.

Both hands are grippng the bar with an overhand grip. If possible, you should try and wrap the first two fingers of each hand over your thumb. It will hurt the first few times you try it, but you will get used to it.

Greg Payne pulled about 850 in a meet using a hook grip.

I can hold a lot of weight, about 350 pounds with an under/over grip. Something I learned in physics class was the relation angles have on tension. 90 degrees is better than 45 degrees. In other words having your hands far apart on the bar produces much more tension than gripping the bar to where your arms form a 90 degree angle with the bar. So, I'd suggest going with a narrower width without interfering with your legs.

Last time i was deadlifting i was short on resources...no gloves, straps, chalk, etc. Got some paper towels and wrapped it around the bar...Helped grip a good bit.
