Dallas Area Help

superwife

New member
I am pretty new to "real" lifting and I was wondering if there is anyone in the Dallas area that i could meet up with sometime to help me with form and understanding different exercises? I would like to learn how to do a dead lift and make sure my form is good for squats and bench. There are also a bunch of other moves I see mentioned on the board that I can't figure out. I have looked at all the videos but i am still struggling...

Any help?

Thanks!!!!

I wish you the very best in finding someone in your area that can be helpful, but don't rule out traveling for instruction. It may be a last resort financially, but if you love training you'll find a way. Even some of the top athletes in the nation travel to train.

i usually travel almost 2hrs every sunday to train......unless im flat broke...most time i scrape it up somehow tho.

The only problem is that i would feel guilty jumping in a big training session with a lot of serious lifters...I am 5'1" and 120 lbs. and just starting to lift...

My PR's so far: 115 squat, 85 bench, no deadlifts yet...

I am afraid I would be a tad intimidated... I wanna get a little stronger and more sure of myself before I jump into all that... though, hopefully not too much longer!!!

(did that make sense or am I just making excuses?)

It makes sense. There are one-on-one training sessions out there usually offered by some great lifters. I'll look around and I'm sure the others on the board will do the same. If your ever in the southern Mississippi area, Bigguns15 and I would happily help you out.

Don't worry about being intimidated. Once you get around a group of serious lifters you will be more motivated than anything else. Also don't think that your size has anything to do with you ability to make great progress.

And yes that did sound like you were making excuses:D just realize that everyone starts somewhere and the more help you have in the beginning the better off you will be. There are some people from the boards around Oklahoma City that wouldn't be a terrible trip for you. Denver might be a touch far but if you are ever up this way let me know and I would love for you to come and train at my gym.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Like Scotsman said, we all started out just like you. And even with experience, we're always looking to tweak something or seeking instruction on how to get stronger. That's part of what makes powerlifting fun.

those lifts are pretty good and i know what ya mean..i thought the same thing. the first time i went to clints(bfolds) i thought i was goin to watch someone doin strongman events(never seen it). never had any intention of doin them or lifting there....from that day on..i was hooked. i found out that training with people that are alot stronger than you or intimidate you is better because i learn a hellova lot more and it motivates the hell outta me seein him and some of the other guys pushin the weights they do. you wont regret it if you find someone that knows their stuff to train with. i promise.

:D That is why I posted the message!! I am really excited to learn more and start getting some GREAT numbers, I just want to make sure i am doing everything correctly from the start...

Oklahoma is definitely reachable...Denver is rather far...a long weekend trip to Mississippi might be doable...

Thanks!!!

I live in Tulsa and my fiance has about the same numbers as you do...I usually train her alone on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. It is a 4 hour trip but you are more than welcome to come train with us anytime. I am in Dallas every now and then as well...pm me if you are interested

I live in Tulsa also, train at the same gym as Ironlion(unless he left real gym?, at least for now), and we have 3 guys going the WPC worlds in canada. So I would say we have some decent lifters if you wanted to come up. In the Dallas area (Hurst I think) there is a very good powerlifting gym called Stroud's. Kirk Stoud and his wife own it, at one time she held some national records. They also used to put on some awsome meets, I think they have one in the next few weeks at the southwest extravagansa. I would really recommend going to this if you are in the area stongman, powerlifting, bodybuilding.

Superwife-

Im from the OKlahoma City area, so IF you want to make a weekend trip up this way you would be more than welcome. My wife has yet to compete, but coaches various High School sports, and is really good with explaining form, so she would be more than glad to help too.

Baker181 is right on with his advice on Strouds,(#817-268-3488).
The Southwest Fitness Extravagansa is this weekend(Sept27) at the Arlington Conv Center. I will be lifting there, so If your going to make it, shoot me a PM and stop bye and say hello.

Another option I know of in the DFW area is www.metroflexgym.com The one in Arlington is about as hardcore as you can get.

I have family in the Durant Okla area, so Im in the Southern OK/North Texas area from time to time. If need be, we could try to help you on one of those trips.

Let me know if we can be of help.

Thanks so much, everyone. My husband and i were looking into going to the Extravaganza this weekend...not sure if we can make it.

I will definitely look into the 2 gyms mentioned. We work out at 24 hour fitness right now and i am really getting sick of the place...and the crappy trainers there (please, no offense meant, Big Nate).

Thanks again!!!
