Countdown To NHL Return

I'm interested in seeing how (un)successful the NHL will be this year. My prediction is in the US the NHL season will be dismal, whereas in Canada it will probably be the same, if not better since many of the Canadian teams have improved significantly and actually have a chance of winning.
Personally, I used to like watching hockey every now and then, but as of right now have zero interest.

Not much of a hockey fan, not that I do not like it, just not much hockey in Louisiana.
Do not know much about it. But I am glad to see that they will be back on the ice soon. I am a huge baseball fan, so I know what its like to not be able to get your sport fix because of a strike, or some other such thing.

my biggest gripe is that they dumped Darren McCarty. he wasn't much of a player but he was active in the community. did fund raisers for cancer and the like. the rest of these sissies cash their checks and head right back to the motherland. and the only place you ever see these dudes outside of the rink is the bar, telling the 19 year olds that "hey, i play hockey for the Red Wings........"

Hockey is the best contact sport's event period. Basketball Yawn boreing overpaid bunch of to tall freaks. Basketball someone should really teach those little girls how to fight. Football is next in line after hockey, but I still say those guy's were way to much equipment, they should be more brave like the rugby player's. I am sooo pumped to see hockey comeing back. I t has been far to long. As far as them being out for an entire season, it sucked hard, as for the new rules i am kind of on the fence about them yet. I have never been a fan of the shootout, it is always been a team sport but when they institute a shootout that is to individual for my likeing. I wish there were less American teams because of the candyass lawsuits that are starting to come into the game. That is not a jab at the americans but they are well known for hitting the lawsuits anytimf they disagree. Hockey has always been about players refereing themselve's, And guys knew if you took a cheap shot at someone the goon from there team was going to get you, and I think that is missing in todays game to much refereeing not enough players gooning. lol
Uhh yes I have played football and hockey and rugby. No hitting in hockey? The big stink right now is should there be hitting in the pre season games because a few players have gone down to injuries already soooo im not sure what you are talking about. I played both and had far more injuries due to the hits on hockey. You need to watch more games bro. Thats all i have to say. As far as this hockey vs. football debate goes...I've played both hockey and football, and I'll say this.....
I don't want Ray Lewis lowering the boom on me coming around the corner of the line unblocked, nor do I want Scott Stevens catching me stretching for a pass across the blue line. Both rattle your brain and your insides with equal violence.
Now, on to the purpose of the thread: NHL hockey is back and I am fucking psyched right up. The rule changes are great, and the redistribution of players has made it really interesting, as there are many legit Cup contenders out there. I like how the Canadiens and Senators are positioned with solid goaltending and a lot of firepower, and Philly and Boston both have solid teams that can fill the net on any given night. The defending champ Lightning made a mistake letting Khabibulin go IMO, and they'll slip a few notches this season. In the West, Calgary appears to be the team to beat by leaps and bounds. The Wings have some good young guns in Zetterberg and Datsuyk...but too many geezers to go the distance IMO.
My favorite part about this NHL season may very well be that the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking pretty weak on paper, and are very likely to miss the playoffs this year thanks to the migration of talent to other teams in the east. Philly, Ottawa, Montreal, Boston, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and the NY Isles all look better than the Leafs...and the Devils are still decent and have the Brodeur Factor going for them. If Atlanta manages to get Kovalchuk signed in the next week or two, you can add them to the list of teams that should finish with more points than the Leafs. I am going to revel in their misery this year!

If you are or were a true hockey fan you would no that goons have and always will be an integral part of the game. They are there to reinforse the rules when the referees miss the calls. It s only been in the last little while that refs have tried to take more control over the game, and time has proven that the more they try to take out the toughness from the game the more the cheap crap happens. If you talk to any of the old time players they will back up this statement 100%. We need to let the players take more control over what go's on in the game and lose some of the refs. 1 incident to prove that was the moore naslund misshap. Moore clearly stuck his elbow out to take Naslund's head off , which went un penalized and his teammates clearly sent out a statement to the Moore that it was not going to go unpunnished . Now I dont think what Bertuzzi did was right by hitting him from behind,that said Bertuzzi was sent out there by his coach to put a big hurt on him for what he did to Naslund. That being said the next time a player is thinking about takeing a cheap shot at someone they may think twice when they know they are going to get a world of hurt come down on there heads.bluepeter said:

That kind of shit along with that wonderful neutral zone trap the powers-that-be have allowed to fester for nearly two decades, has turned hockey into an absolute yawn fest.
The ice surface needs to be enlarged (will never happen as that would cut into NHL governors profits) or they need to go 4 on 4.
Another good idea would be to cut the teams from 30 down to 20 or less.

Bluepeter i agree with your lasy comments there. and I think the rules that have been instituted this year are going to change the game so that there are going to be less hooking and grabing and the neutral zone trap will also be affected by the new rule's. I say you should try and watch a few game's "if you have lost faith" as I said the new rules are going to change the game huge. I agree with removeing some of the teams also, I say get rid of the teams in the US market that are not bringing people in and give us back the winninpeg jets as they are really trying and showeing great intrest in wanting a NHL team again. With the salary cut they can now have a chance to compete in the market.
