cleanpress and/or BTNpushpress incorporation into 5x5

hi, i'm on week 4 day 1 of my starr's intermediate 5x5 routine. I've made every lift so far + extra reps on my heavy on day 3 (managed 5 reps instead of the programmed 3).

i'm 5'8 175lb 16%bf.
this past week 3 day 3 workout, I did for my heavy (did my 3, then did 2 more with extra gas in the tank)
Squat: 250x5
Bench: 200x5
Row: 135x3 (back weak)
and some assistance... weighted dips BW+90 8 reps on last set. barbell curls 55x8, 65x5, 75x3 (heavy)

on Day 2's I do my light squats, deadlifts (around 255 for heavy), and incline db presses. I did 80sx5 on my heavy set. I love these. then i finish off with 3 sets of pullups to failure, i got 6, 4, and 3 the last time.

everything is working well, i'm gaining weight and strength by eating alot.

my questions is where would I put cleanpresses? I have seen some people in the gym doing them and I would like to do this big compound movement too, but it looks very taxing, looks like it works the entire body.

so should i finish off my current 9 week program first and incorporate this lift the next cycle? or should I start them right away by replacing the db incline presses on my day 2 workouts (even tho they're my favorite). or the third option, just add them? also want to learn how to do and start doing BTN pushpresses, but not sure how to integrate them my replacing or adding which exercise...

a little nervous about adding these lifts, as my current program is starting to get pretty heavy, but as i mentioned i was able to top my target 3reps on my heavy set in my week 3 day 3 workout.

i know i should just shut up, stick to my program and eat, but i want to do cleanpresses and BTN pushpresses, so any suggestions? thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

you could do the push presses instead of day 2 incline press. I am not sure
what a cleanpress is but Starr gave the option of substituting cleans for the
rows

lol.. u can't just incorporate them whenever u feel like it or want to.. the clean is a very technical lift for the untrained athlete... without proper coaching, u might take weeks to master this lift... and while on the 5x5, u could do this on day 3.. with only the bar.. pratice it first.. learn the movement..

and why are u pushing the extra 2 reps on day 3? even tho u have gas left(which all of us do), u're not supposed to.. as that's the purpose and the way the 5x5 is designed.. it's supposed to prep u for day one next week.. and it also prevents u from burning out too fast..

maybe u can start the clean as a serious lift in the 5x5 in your next run.. but for now, u can start getting used to the movement and do your own research on it.. although it looks fun, it can kick ur ass..

i don't expect these lifts to be easy. i actually expect them to totally kick my ass, which is why i'm asking if i should wait till my next cycle of 5x5 or if it's possible to integrate them perhaps by subsituting another exercise on a given day based on consensus recommendation.

I guess I just have to start learning the exercise with light weight and let my body speak to me. Can someone please direct me to some videos and "how to" instructional guides for the cleanpress that they think are accurate/good? Thanks.

hell yah, I substituted BTN PP for inclines for my run with the 5x5... i'm still doing them, love it (I hate incline and the ROM... i'd rather be flat or do an overhead lift)... no, my upper chest isn't "lagging" either :p

You can alternate dead lifting with cleans weekly (aka one week clean & heavy clean pulls... and the next week dead lift).

I don't like how you have gone about doing 5 reps on the triples (3 reps)... it's great that you can do it, but you're not understanding the program. Stick with what you're supposed to do damnit  You'll thank me in the long run.

Thanks sarge. I only went for a few extra reps on what was supposed to be my 3 rep heavy set on fridays because i had read that this was ok, somewhere on this forum (i wish i could remember who posted it on whose thread). Either way I will stick to my rationed 3 going forward. I think I only got away with it since I just finished week 3. It's not going to be possible and I'm going to want to save some gas in the tank for the following workout. I don't want to miss any lifts especially going into PR territory.

Thanks for the link. Not sure if I want to do BTN pushpresses and cleans, or cleanpresses. Your choices/substitutions make good sense, BTNPP for inclineDB and cleans for DL, since you're BTNPPing, you dont need to clean & "press" again.

If you were to do so, how would you integrate the clean&press into madcow's 5x5?
