a friend of mine complained of flu-like symptoms after a particularly heavy workout early in training career, specifically she was doing rather heavy squat sets and afterwards had chills, sweats and actually was running a low grade fever, she speculated that it had something to do with toxins being released and I am submitting this thread on her behalf to see if anyone out there has experienced this

To be honest, she's probably getting the flu that's going around....

You're bodytemp will be elevated after a workout... as for the chills.. that is not common.. sweating..yeah, we all sweat when we work out...;) but it sounds like she is getting the flu.. There certainly aren't any Toxin's being released from working out.. You're body will have elevated cortisol levels after working out..but these are hardly toxins that will make anyone feel ill.. (you'll feel sore)... If your friends theory were correct, no one could survive boot camp, compete in the olympics.. and in all honesty, the human race would have died out a long..long time ago...

I'd guess that because she had "a particularly heavy workout early in training career" she probably dumped her immune system into her boots, and ended up being vulnerable to a minor flu virus she normally wouldn't have gotten.

Now, if this fever, sweats and chills were all transient, I'd say it was just a case of bad overtraining. I'd done it to myself on legs day, and had all the same, plus nausea and vomiting. The lack of blood to the stomach and head, plus a huge lactic acid buildup, and your body is gonna hate you one way or another :D
