CELL PHONE's at the gym

dannomite

New member
Hope this question is ok to ask in this forum but I have to know...

What do you guys think about cell phones in the gym?

Personally I can't think of anything more annoying but I feel like I am alone on this sometimes. There are some big dudes at my gym who I see on them and can't believe it. I would think they would be more focussed but I guess not.

If I owned a gym you'd get banned for a week the first time you were caught on a cell phone, and I'd revoke your membership on the second occasion. If something is so important that you can't be without your phone for an hour then buy a fucking home gym and stay out of my area.

Cheers,
Scotsman

What about doctors and important business men? I personally keep my phone in the locker since I don't need it. I don't see why you guys let others bother you at the gym.

one of the girls I train w/chats on her phone bet. sets & TWICE has missed it when i needed a spot. So one time when shes going for a PR on bench I basically ignore her & check out this hot guy next to us.

Well- she screams at me & has to rest the bar on her chest. After that, she got the point that we concentrate on our workout & chat on the phone later....lol

Periodically, there's a couple of firemen with an open radio that train the same time I do. For some reason, I don't find it nearly as annoying as some jerk chatting into his phone half-way across the gym. Maybe it's because I'm a bit of an amateur fireman, myself.

IF - they are allowed it should be under two guidelines:

1 - on vibrate
2 - no talking on equipement or on the gym floor - you have to talk do it outside or in the locker room.

I guess thats the only way I could except the situation. Obviously a first responder should be able to be contacted 24/7. But when thats guys radio goes off when I am mid-rep and he breaks my concentration, I'd better see him bolting out the door.

Seems reasonable. as long as there's no flying plates. :)

I saw a guy trying to do skull crushers while holding the phone with his shoulder. LOL He got through about three or four reps before it dropped, he just kept doing the exercise and then picked up the phone when he was done. LOL he left that guy on the other end hangin!

Personally I think it's very ru . . . one sec I got a phone call.

Saw a dude yesterday doing curls (which he did for about 45 minutes straight) stop in the middle of a set to answer his phone... I wanted to take the phone and shove it up his ass.

then you got these fucktards that want to take pics with their camera phone of people that are working out. I dont want some fuckhead taking my picture.

not to mention...how would you feel if that "doctor" was some kind of pedofile, had his camera phone on video mode, and was taking a video of you child while they were at the gym?

Haven't seen anyone trying to take a photo with one at the gym yet... man that would be creepy, not sure how I would react.

Well that's just creepy. I don't want some fuckhead masterbating to my picture either.

Are you saying cell phones should be banned from the workout floor because even people that NEED it might be using it for some sick shit? Really?

Well, an on-call doctor could have a beeper, it goes off, they hit the locker room and call who they need to call. Same deal with on-call responders. If you're a businessman with such pressing matters that take precedent over your workout, take care of it, then go to the gym......the only other justifable reasons is if you're wife is expecting a baby or somebody close to you is sick (even then you probably wouldn't be at the gym, and anyway the conversation is a few seconds and you're gone). Point being, legitimate uses for a cell at the gym are NEVER an annoyance or problem, it is the other 99.999% of the times people use them.

Most conversations are people wasting space calling their friends to make plans for a night of drinking, bragging about the previous night's drinking, guys fighting with their girlfriend, guys placing bets on games, or guys who aren't all that important trying to play the role of "president and CEO" to impress any girl within earshot, and just generally giving me the urge to shove the phone up their ass sideways. There is absolutely no reason a grown man or woman shouldn't have the attention span to concentrate on their workout and put the phone away for an hour or two. The only thing more annoying is cell phones in a movie theater.

I don't care. People are free to do whatever they want unless they hurt other people.
Hippie :D

I pretty much agree though; if they're talking loud enough to be distracting or are taking up equipment just to sit and chat, then it's a problem. Otherwise I could care less. Hell, most people at the gym aren't doing much good with their workouts anyway - the phone conversation could be the most productive aspect of their session :).

There's a couple PT's at my gym who talk on their cell phone while training clients. At first I thought it was for business but then I realized they were just talking to their homies. I felt kinda bad for their clients just standing their aimlessly pumping out tricep pushdowns or lat pulldowns while their trainer prattled away on the phone.

Probably no big deal, they were just counting reps anyway :D

we had some moron member grease up the bars with some heave duty lubricant, needless to say plates started crashing off of bars left and right. anyways there are two ab crunch machines next to the power rack and this little woman put her phone on the floor while doing her crunches... and wouldn't you know it a plate falls and shatters the phone. she had the nerve to hold him responsible!!! unbelievable!! to say that i thought it was ridiculous would be a huge understatement, and he paid for it. if your stupid enought to have your phone on the ground near thousands of pounds of weight you deserve to have your shit broken. rant over :)

I keep mine with me at the gym. When I'm at the local gym down the street I put it on silent and put it in my bag. When I am at MY gym...I keep it on the shelf by the cd player and the only person who ever calls me is my wife and she understands that if I don't answer it is because I'm in the middle of a set. Call back and try again in a few. She also knows that when I answer, I'm not being rude or a butthead...I'm just training so I'm not in the mood to discuss much or be overly friendly. I'm also out of breath. 10 second conversations.

Are you ok?
Yes.
Who all showed up to train?
So and so.
Ok honey, call me if you need anything.
Ok sweetie, love you, bye.

I've gotten hurt training before and my gym is in an area where I am the ONLY person who speaks or understands English. She worries.

I dont take my phone in the gym with me at all. When at the gym, Its me time. I once saw a stupid fat woman on the treadmill on the phone for 1 hour. I wish the power rack was right next to the treadmills. I Would have dropped the bar every rep. I just look down on a guy whos on the cellphone in the gym unless its necessary.

While at the gym, I keep my cell phone with me, on vibrate. I refrain from talking on it though: rather, if I receive a call that is important enough to interupt my workout, I allow it to go to voice mail, and return the call from the front (off the workout floor).

In general, I find cell phone user's to be annoying. When I use mine, I always try to be courteous, and considerate of those around me. That means I don't stop a conversation to answer the phone, I don't use it in restaurants or at the dinner table, and I almost always have it on vibrate. And you will never, ever, see me talking on my phone while driving.

i never ever bring my cell to the weights area anymore.. i used to bring em.. but one day.. after my squats at the power rack, i went to do bench... i forgot that i had my cell with me... so i accidently left it at the power rack.. 5 mins later i come back.. it's gone.. if i ever find out who took it.. there'll be no more 45lbs plates left in the gym.. it's all gonna be up his ass!! i guess it pays to earn..

asshole no more

i leave mine at the desk. if a call can't be answered in a few words, i'll step outside. i don't want any fucks listening to my conversation anyway.

Luckily for me, I workout at 3pm in the afternoon and at the gym I'm a member of there is usually no more than 6 people total in there for the duration of my workout. Its awesome. I get the solitary feeling that I like when Im working out. I dont like being bother'd by people at all.

That being said, I'm guilty of having my cell phone with me while I workout. It's always sitting on the floor right next to my jugg of water and workout sheet. However I think in the last 3 months, it has only rang 2 times while I have been working out... and im never a guy that stays on the phone more than 30 seconds, ever. If its going to take longer than 30 seconds "Im in the middle of working out, let me hit you back in about 20 minutes". I've never had anyone give me a look because im on or have my cell phone close.

The point is that people are at the gym to concentrate and train. When some guido idiot with a fake tan and a blowout haircut is talking on the phone to one of his 'boys' between sets of cable crossovers it completely interrupts people's concentration and destroys focus. There was a time just 10 years ago when cell phones were almost unheard of... and we all got by. Leave the god damn thing in the car.

Problem is, most douchebags don't know what courteous means.

I don't take mine into the gym. I don't have a problem with people who do, just those shmucks so talk on the phone inbetween sets or while sitting on a piece of equipment.

I understand if you're a doctor or fireman... but 99.5% of the people I see in the gym are not either of those, just a moron who can't part it because they might miss a precious phone call.

My girlfriend used to embarass me at restaurants when she would walk over to a person at a table and start asking about their conversation.

To some guy on the train to NYC: "Hey, I couldn't help but overhear that you had a great sales quarter. I just wanted to congratulate you!"

To this college kid at a very nice restaurant (while he's eating with his fellow college dudes): "Sorry to hear that your girlfriend dumped you. I have a friend who is very attractive, fit, and perfect for you. Would you like me to introduce you to him?"

What was once embarassing is now my style. I now do the same thing she does. It's amazing how people realize that others are overhearing their conversations and they shut up! Try it sometime! (Just be bigger than the guy you make comments to.)

When I'm on call at work, I'm required to have my cell phone with me, so I take it in with me for my work outs. I hate taking it though -- even in pocket, it's in the way and I have to take it out of my pocket and set it down for certain excercises. If I do get a call, I just step out of the work out area until I'm finished.

If it were up to me, I don't think I would bother carrying a cell phone. I would buy one with a couple hundred pre-paid minutes and throw it in the glove box for emergencies and call it good enough. They're like an invisible leash in my opinion.

Unfortunately, I "sometimes" have to take mine when i'm on call for work, but it's always on vibrate. Annoying

Whiskey

There are a few guys at my gym with the wireless blue tooth head sets on. I would love to tell them what everyone thinks of them.

i always leave mine in my truck because its the rules of the gym and i want to focus on training so when i see someone on the phone even if i cant hear them talking it jus anoyes me that they think there above me and the other members, last week i actually walked up to a guy and asked him if he was familur witht the rules he said "what" i said "no phones on the floor" he mean mugged me the rest of the time he was at the gym i jus pretended i didnt notice

Whoever here opens up their own commerical gym next should install cellphone jammers all over the gym so no signals get accessed in the workout area.

I have one of those cell phones with the mini keyboard (like a sidekick) and after every couple sets I update my workout journal which I save into the phone, and then every week or so transfer that data into an excel spreadsheet on my pc.

It helps my time between sets go by quickly, and I'm usually listening to tunes so its pretty clear I'm not using the phone for useless chatting but I hope it doesn't annoy everyone around me because I can't stand people who have conversations at the gym on the phone.

That goes for the random conversations too. Especially when its some herb so obviously trying to pick up a girl out of his league.

I dunno I think everyone in my gym thinks I'm crazy because I don't say hi to anyone but the employees, and the occasional nod of acknowledgement to a couple other regulars/frequent spotters. I don't go to the gym to make friends or get laid. Or talk incessantly on a cell phone.

Agreed. My line of work requires me to be availible by cell phone 24/7.

Last week this fat ass was doing crunches and talking on his cell phone! What an idiot! I wondered if the person he was talking to was thinking "what the hell is the heaving breathing all about dude?".

LOL-I've often thought this. Not to mention godknowswhat substandard organic processes his cell is microwaving to who knows where.

worse is cell phone in restaurnats. especially people who talk loud so everyone will hear there converstions. as if we are all clamoring to hear them talk.

If the phone is on vibrate, and the call is taken off the gym floor I see no problem. Camera phones are to be shut off at all times in the gym.

I bet alot of them, make there phones ring on purpose then talk to themselves because they think it makes them look cool. Doctor, fireman, police officer, queen of sheba. Either lift or get the f**k out, people don't wanna hear that s**t. If having your phone near by is really that important then get a home gym in your basement where no 1 can hear you.

I work out at home and my cousin used to come round 3 times a week and train with me. Always 10 mins after leaving his girlfreind, then every single session for the whole 3 months he was coming round that dumm thing would ring him half way through our session and say when you coming back. Even though we always took roughly the same amount of time around 1 hour to 1 hour 20
and every time she rung sometimes 2 times in 1 session he would sometimes turn down my stereo to hear her also it sometimes got in the way of our sets he would like do a set of 5 rows and then talk on phone to her for about 10 mins resulting in us both having to take 2 long a rest inbetween sets.
Plus he was always using sloppy technique and basically just rushing our workout so that he could get back to his girlfreind.
He doesn't come round anymore (probably because she persuaded him not to)
But he said he wants to start lifting again in his rugby pre-season. So i think if that shit starts again im gunna wack him with a plate and try knock some sense into him. Hopefully he will realise what a dumm ***** she is.

Peace.

:Update: After everything i have been telling him over the past few months about how crap machines are and how good free weights and the core lifts are. He was round my house today and said he will be going to this gym near where he lives. I have seen inside this gym before, not 1 peice of freeweight equipment in site and a whole lot of machines. And he says im gunna go in there 2 times a week they have a rowing maching those are good for you arn't they. I just thought to myself whatever and said yea those rowing machines are real good.
