Cardio Question

I started doing cardio to slim down. I'm 5'11 and was about 205-210 lbs. I started doing a whole lot of cardio, about an hour to an hour and a half for six days a week a few months ago. I slimmed down to 187 lbs, and I still have a little ways to go before I get my body fat percentage down to where I need it to be. My question is this: How do I know if the amount of cardio I'm doing is counter productive? I've cut back to 1/2 an hour to an hour for my cardio each day, and am only doing it five days a week, but I want to make sure that I don't loe any of my muscle mass. How do I know?

Well, losing fat and not mass will also depend on your diet. Look at the Women's Board for WarLobo's post "Whne 30+ 30...."

I believe that anything over 60 minutes can be catabolic, depending on how much fat you want to burn off.

when trying to lose fat, either through cardio or dieting, i take frequent measurements of my thighs and calves (where i carry very little fat), with the idea that if i start losing muscle, those would be the first places i'd notice it.

not very scientific, but it seems to work for me.
:)

strength level can tell you too. not the definitive answer but it will guage whether you may be eating some muscle or not. you will ultimately burn SOME, but its keeping yourself fed consistently that will spare it.

when you do cardio, you should keep your heart rate at 70% of the max. if you go higher than that you body goes into an aenorobic state, which means your either building muscle or tearing it down. you can find this out by this little eqution:
(220-(your age))* .7
to make it easier to find your target heart rate divive the answer by 6 and that will be your target heart rate for every ten seconds. It won't feel like you doing anything untill about 10-12 min. into the session when you start sweating your ass off. You should do it for
30-40 min. at a time. it's best to do it in the morning before breakfast or after your workout, this is when your bodies glycogen levels are at it's lowest so you'll start burning fat faster. pm me if you need any further advice.

yeah there has to be a diet involved as well, nothing but cardio won't help if your eating like a pig.

WizKid is right on 100%. All the cardio in the world wont help if your feeding body more calories than your burning. A calorie deficient is the key to fat-loss.
