Captains of Crush gripper question

What is your opinion on the durability/longevity of grippers?

Should you begin to discount their approximate resistance after a certain number of reps over time, by age itself, or some mixed combination.

Since they are only $20 each - I am considering buying a second set up to the #2 so I have a Left and Right.

Curious for opinions. (and I was this close ---><--- to making this a poll)

The rumor is that Ironmind doesn't have the best quality control when it comes to the springs in their grippers.

If you buy a second set, you could end up with 2 grippers with completely different tensions.

I don't know if it's gotten any better, but that's the way it used to be.

Maybe invest in an Ivanko Super Gripper and a bit of electrial tape. Wrap the handles so your hands stay on there snugly and voila - instant progression.

As per the original question, it's not easy to tell. I wouldn't even worry with something like the Ivanko - even if the tension is less, you keep increasing it. If, by some off chance, you max it out, buy a new one and see if you can max it on brand new springs.

Wait, scratch that - you can simply BUY new springs seperately. :)

but...but...

if ya can close the #3 Capt. of Crush (CoC for short) you get certified and a cool tag saying your one of the few... the proud... the Captain of Crushers.

lol... i bought into it

Ivanko after reviewing seems like a much, MUCH better investment. :coffee:

Although I can tote around my CoC's very easily and that IS a plus... to me.

I had one of these prior to the CoC's - and I thought it was crap.

The handles are not wide enough - perhaps grip tape would have helped this, but I did not think/bother with that.

Helped me plenty. I had CoC first. Honestly, I just switch between both when I can. I prefer the Ivanko due to the smaller weight jumps, thought.

With the CoC, I found myself working to close the gripper 20 times before I could start with the next level up.

Damn sure hope that spring on the #2 gets worn out then maybe I can close it :) #3-good luck with getting your tshirt on that one

I've closed the 2 a total of five times, couldn't get the 3 though.

You the man. I can't get that last little bit. Won't be long though.

Yeah, that's always a bitch and a half. Left hand some times doesn't make it, to be honest. Right's not a problem though.

Overcrushes are good. Ever try those?

Yeah, my right hand is stronger also. Never heard of Overcrushers. Who makes those?

Overcrushing means to grind down the inside handles of a gripper so you have to learn to close it past the intended range of motion. The idea being that the weakest point in your grip then will be past what you need to close a normal gripper

Not to be a smartass since that is right, but that's a Beyond the Range overcrush, which are much better than normal overcrushes. When you file down the inside of the handles to go BTR, you can't replace them if they happen to break since you modified them. an overcrush is just closing the gripper (normal or BTR) and holding it closed for time, usually 7-15 seconds. Overcrushes and Negatives are IMO the best ways to go up in grippers since they should be Heavy singles instead of repping them. (negatives being you get a gripper you can't close yet, forcing it shut with both hands and let it go with the helping hand and letting the gripper open on it's own)

What do you guys recommend for wearing or putting on the gripper to stop them from tearing my hands apart? I don't get as good a grip when I wear gloves but without it draws blood after a while, I wouldn't want to have to put on gloves to use them everytime either, is there some kinda of tape I can put on it etc...?

TIA

Put a layer of grip tape around it.

I've never used grip tape, so it probably would do you just fine. when I started, my hands and my skin would ache for a while...I'm talking about months lol. After a while though, my hands gtt used to it and the pain entirely went away. (I don't have many callouses on my hand from gripping, so it might be nerves numbing or something.) Nowadays, I like grippers with deep, rigid knurling on the handles to get a good grip, and it's pain free.

Grip tape is good stuff. No worries about cutting up your hands. Although we know powerful man-hands are where it's at.

I can close the #2 but not the #3. I have not really been training for it though.

I have had my CoC grippers since 2003 and they are fine, no problems with em at all. My hand strength has improved alot though.

Oh, I never heard of it called that but I do holds also for my final sets.

I wouldn't be able to grip them with tape. My hands get so damn sweaty I have to use chalk when I use them.

This sounds great! But I checked the site and there's so much text, so many options! I gripped the bathroom scales last night and got 80KG's (176lbs)without too much effort. All I need is something to progress from here. Which options should I be looking at?

There's hardly any real text on the page: it's just a table of the calculated force settings for different spring positions. Maybe it was just your wording, but you do know that those "options" are all on one gripper (with the aforementioned adjustable springs), right? That's what makes the Ivanko such a good choice for regular grip training. You can progress steadily at fairly small intervals just as you would with your lifts.

i have closed this other brand that was labled 250. it was my friends, who can also close the level 3 coc. he said the gripper 250 and the coc 3 are close in range, but he also said it was hard to gauge the weights to the spring.

either way, i cant close the 3... unless u count halfway :)
