Can You Have Too Much Protein?

I worked out today and then got into a conversation about diet with the manager of the Wellness Center I go to. She told me that the maximum amount of protein I should take in is 1.5 grams for every KILOGRAM of body weight I weigh. I then told her I thought it was per POUND of body weight. I told her that when I am trying to bulk up I try to eat 1.5 grams of protein per pound and 1 gram per pound just to maintain muscle when cutting . She told me that much proteing could cause kidney problems and then the extra protein gets stored as fat. Anybody know if she is right? Is there any supps I can take to protect my kidneys if she is right? I thought I knew what I was talking about, but what do you guys think?

These pencil neck nutritionists don't know shit, I say better off taking too much than not enough.

2g/lb Period.

i think your body can only digest 50grms of protein every 2 hrs, if you take in more it probably could store as fat but if you are a active lifter i wouldnt sweat it,plus high levels of protein is hard on your body but then again too much of eveything can be bad for ya..

Tell anyone that tells you excess protein, can harm your kidneys to fuck off. They don't know any fucking thing. More than 5000 studies show no harm to kidneys at extreme intakes of protein, providing that you have healthy kidneys to begin with. If you want good gains stick with 1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight.
To answer your second question yes there is a proven supplement to protect your kidneys, WATER the more the better.

Thanks for the info fellas. Nathan - I knew someone was going to tell me to do a damn search. I normally would but my ass is busy as hell at work today. I'll hit up the search engine when I get home tonight, so I have a valid argument when I go see the manager tomorrow morning. Thanks for all the responses tho. PEACE

Drink lots of water.
Eat lots of protein.

I'm surprised not one person mentioned that protein can be broken down into muscle glycogen via gluconeogenesis. It has the least likelihood of being stored as fat compared to any other macronutrient. Some is also excreted as urea.

Tell that chick to STFU. The reason she's thin is because she eats 2 sticks of celery daily.

more likely it will store it as fat.

The body will...

A) Use the protein to repair tissue.
B) Use the protein, break it down into glycogen for the muscles.
C) Excrete as urea
D) Store as fat.

I'm a little skeptical on the order of C and D, but I'm pretty sure you'll piss most of it out.

one quick word on ur body storing proteins as fat. Firslty it has to convert it into glucose and then into fat, our bodies are efficient and that aint no efficient process, especially as its got a shit load of muscle already stored when it needs it. If u have too many calories, its more likely the excess carbs or fat in ur diet will be turned into adipose tissue.

Right on guys, water is the best tonic for ur kidneys, dilute the urea and it can do no harm.
