Bulking equals Pot belly?

I have been bulking for about 2 months and have gained noticeble muscle. I don't want to start cutting until I get to my bulking goal. I notice when I relax my abs I look like I'm 3-4 month pregnant(I'm a man). Is this normal for bulking? I also have noticeble fat around my Oblique areas. Is cutting the only way to get rid of these fat stores? The rest of my body looks lean.
 
Your caloric intake has to less that your "out-take" or energy expenditure in order to lose weight/fat. Simple as that. If you increase calories, you WILL gain some fat. How much is totally dependent on how many excess cals you consume. That's why it's a it's nearly impossible to pack on mass while losing bf........naturally anyways. Finish your bulking stage and switch to a reduce calorie diet. Only way you will lose the excess lbs.

Also, learn to breath through your nose. This is laughable, but very true. Most "belly breathers" have distended stomaches. Funny how the little things we do effect the body. Now, it's not gonna reduce bodyfat of course, but it will help with a pertruding stomach.

Wow, really? I didn't think when I breathed air went down my esophagus (which leads to the stomach). I thought both breathing 'methods' both put air into my lungs. Do you have anything to back this up?
 
Yes, my knowledge, take it for what it's worth......nothing in writing, but it makes sense if you think about it...also why vaccuums work so well (see Arnold and Franco)

It really doesn't make much sense. That's why I posted a skeptical reply. It's only your personal theory. Your lungs, as they expand push on the same diaphram as when you breathe whether you breathe through your mouth or nose. The only difference is that your mouth is a larger orafice and can take in more air at a time.
 
I'm sitting here now, watching my stomach as I try both ways. There is something to what Kurz is saying. I inhale through my mouth and notice my abs are at a more relaxed state. Breathing through my nose it seems more contracted. I think it's only because we can take more air in when we inhale through the mouth than we can with our nose. Which would obviously fill up our lungs abit more. Just my theory though.
 
That's exactly what I'm saying. The mechanics is the same. You just able to take in more air at once - which isn't exactly a bad thing.

The fat in my stomach is also the last to go. It sometimes takes an extreme amount of cutting to lose the fat in the stomach. I have been able to cut and gain muscle mass simultaneously (visible in pictures) so you may want to give that a try.

You obviously know 100x more than me or anyone else on this board, I mean just look at you and look what you have to say....it's a great benefit for all of us to have you on board.....

As for the breathing technique, I was in a conference at one of the better known spas/resorts in this country, led by a very intelligent "yoga" expert who spoke on breathing techniques. He informed us that "belly breathers" tend to have distended stomachs vs. nasal breathers. Introduced vaccuums and the like. I never said this would help you lose fat in any way. Some have very low bodyfats, but still have pertruding stomachs (not attributable to AAS!), where this will help!

I still think this is BS. Whether you breathe through nose or mouth most likely has nothing do with with the size of ones stomach.

I'm not even going to go into the idea of believing a "yoga expert" at a "better known spa/resort.

I didn't say you made it up. I just think the statement is a little ridiculous and not nesasarly good advice. I never mentioned that I was worried about my diet, but thanks.
 
Let's forget it......I know you didn't say I made it up, but it's not worth it.....it's horrible advice. All I said was focus on your DIET and forget the breathing......

one thing to keep in mind is pelvic tilt, i hear that this can cause ur insides to push agaisnt ur stomach wall and make it seem more protruding. apparently if the muscles in your back are very tight they will pull the back of your pelvis up. your pelvis acts like a bowl and your insides start to lean foward....... apparently there are excercises to alleviate this.

Back on topic...at the very least, as Jkurz mentioned, vacuums are an excellent core exercise to help with the distended belly syndrome.

I still consider myself a noob to elitefitness also, and you are right in suggesting this. Keep in mind, there is a lot of testosterone flowing through these boards also lol. This board is great and full of good info from good ppl just trying to help others. Hope you gain as much as I have from these boards!

Let's be honest. The guy may not be huge but he has a lot more mass than the average joe.

I did read the entire thread. When insulted about his physique he responded asking for pictures. Which no one posted.

I cant see much in your avatar but if I insulted you saying you looked like a fat ass you'd probably ask he to post pictures, which I think would be reasonable.

I don't reply to these threads, b/c it's not my style but this time I'm making an exception. njripped, your knowledge is welcome here and you are encouraged to participate and help the boards thrive. But you have no understanding of what the word respect means. People like Jkurz, bigdho, etc have been on these boards for a while and they've taken time out of their schedules to help others. Sure, I don't agree with everything they say, but that's what the forum is for. You on the other hand feel the need to "challenge" everyone you debate with. What gives? Are you that insecure about your body that you need to challenge everyone? I don't think anyone came at you straight on and knocked you for being a buck seventy. From what I've seen, it's usually been in response to when you act like an ass. I stress the word act b/c that's all it is. And also, think about your logic. You get all defensive when people remark about how light you are, saying it shouldn't make a difference, but you go on asking for everyone to post their pics in order to prove something. Sounds like hypocrisy to me.

Continue to contribute, but keep it positive or go to bodybuilding dot com's forums.

If you review my posts where I've challenged people it has been only those who began with the name calling and disparaging my physique. Not once did I challenge someone who didn't initiate an attack upon me and I wouldn't do it (it's not my style). :) As an example, Bigho, out of no where said the following "LMFAO!!!! I see the pic...............You are skinny but I don't see the mass." Now keep in mind that I had never heard of this guy before he posted this! And I have received PMs thanking me for putting these people in their place because they were attacked themselves.

As far as my weight goes, I am completely happy with being 170 and I don't think I'm defensive at all. Now when someone chooses to rag on me about it, they will be called out for their own pics.

When we reach the point when no one feels the need to criticize another members physique then I think the board will become a more friendly and helpful place.

I take that as a complement. Ive never been called fat in my life. 4 years ago I weighed 170 (skinny) and now Im 250 @ 9-10 % b.f. Im not scared of being fat in fact Im not going to diet down till my lbm is 275. Its like I said in the beginning, your a lean average joe. Its not an insult its a fact. Our goals must be different, compareing you to me doesnt make any sence, it wold be like compareing a monster truck to a sports car. I'd love to be at your bf%, I was getting pretty close at the start of june but it fucked with my training too much and I lost like 100lbs off my lifts. Not cool

Now I'm fat again and it sucks... but at least I have 18" cold arms & a 385 bench again. YES I'M AWARE THAT EVERYONE ON THE INTERWEB HAS AT LEAST 19 INCH ARMS AND BENCHES 405 FOR REPS :D
 
NJRipped - just out of curiosity, how tall are you, what's your diet look like (cals, P/F/C ratios), and how much cardio do you do?

If you're a skinny bitch then I want to be a skinny bitch too! I'm 6'1" about 182 lbs. right now but I think if I dropped 2% BF I would be closer to 175 or so and might finally have the abs I've been trying to get for what seems like forever.

I'm 5'10" 172. My diet is a 45/45/10 mix with 2300 calories a day. I have eaten the exact same thing everyday for the last couple of years (literally) so I know my exact calorie/protein/carb/fat intake at all times. I work out my full body 1X per week and only do two sets per bodypart (some might say it shows - lol). I do cardio every morning at 6am. It's all about eating right.

Is that 10% carbs??? I currently am doing 50/30/20 P/F/C and it seems to be working pretty well. I do weights 6x a week (lunch M-F, morning on Saturday) and I run 3-4 miles about 4-5x a week after work. I also eat the exact same things at the exact same times M-F because it's so easy to pack for work and stay on my diet during the week. The challenge is on weekends when I'm out with my girl. She's a negative influence on my progress, even though I'm doing it in part for her lol.

We have had this argument before. To me, you are skinny and dont have a lot of mass. However, you are definitely CUT and have a low body fat, something i dont have nor care about. We both know i am not trying to get a six pack, but rather still watching my numbers skyrocket in the gym while not resorting to any supplements to assist my growth.
 
The bitches will try to bring you down with the eating. They always try to use guilt. My response is always its only food - its not a damn activity. And if that doesnt work then I kick then to the curb. lol No, the 10% is fat - I don't buy the whole low carb thing. I would say the thing that may be holding you back is excessive calorie intake - most people don't realize how they add up until they do the calculations. Figure out your exact calorie intake one day during the week and one on the weekend - do it right after each meal.

As I recall, you are 5'10" 250lbs (it could have been one of the other bitches who criticized me but I think those are your stats). Lets face it you're fat! Don't even tell me you don't use any supplements to assist your growth at 250lbs! I'm sure if I looked deeply into your background I would find records of your multi-day visits to Burger King & McDonalds for Whoppers and Big Macs. lol Most scales max out at 280lbs but I hear the gals at NAAFA go to the cattle ranch for their weigh-in - so there are other options open for you later. ;)

Rep 405 on bench, actually 5x5 at 405 a couple of weeks ago, and nearly a 50" chest, 18.5" arms (not fat either), 38" waist, sorry i am not as thin as you are so are numbers wont exactly match.
