There is still a bit of a conflict about what constitutes being Jewish. Is it strictly cultural/ethnic or is there a religious component that must be satisfied. I took Jewish Studies as one of my non-Western electives in college.

Me too. And yes, this is of debate and it really depends on whether or not you believe yourself to be a modern (secular) Jew or old fashioned, etc. I consider myself Modern... has to do with how Judaism fits into my life. Not how my life fits into Judaism. I like that a lot... the class was very interesting as well... got to learn about Mendhelsson, Spinoza, etc. Great minds.

And Judaism foundation is built upon religion... but it has spread from there. I do not consider being Jewish my ethnicity.. I believe it to be a culture and religion. Many would argue though.

After the Diaspora it's hard to cling to a common ethnicity/culture. The physical appearance and culture of someone who comes from Jewish descent varies so widely. Frankly, it's surprising how strongly Jews have clung to their common identity. It's probably due to the long history of persecution.

Well, the diaspora has happened numerous times to many different cultures/ethnicities but to the Jews is just something in itself. I just think that as you said, because of the long history of persecution, the Jews have learned how to strongly cling to their identity. Their history really amazes me... and not because I am Jewish...

I concur, I'm German by heritage. The Holocaust gets a lot of the focus but Pogroms throughout Europe and especially Russia have probably been responsible for more deaths. Most people don't realize how anti-semitic the French have been, The Dreyfus Affair is a good example.
