best strength training to boost squats?

I’m interested in getting on a good strength training regiment to boost my squats. I’m currently doing around 285 lbs. I weigh more than my friend and he can out squat me by almost 80 lbs. We do the same workouts but whatever we’re doing is just not working for me. We do high volume and we go high repetitions do you think this is what’s hurting me and should I switch things up?
 
Look into doing front squats but also box squats. They really teach you to take care of your body. You won't lean forward.
 
Stay away from the Smith machine. Squats should always be on the squat rack.
