being mentally prepared for a lift??

Hey guys, I just hit deads tonight and I hit a PR.....but I think I could have done better....I don't think my mind was in the lift 100%.

I tried to psych my self up but I found it hard to focus....plus when I bent over to grab the bar......it's hard as hell to get a good breath with the belt in my gut....let alone have a clear head.

I try to get ready for the lift and take some breaths...but I never feel ready....so I just go.

What do you guys do before a lift....what do you think about.

Thanks in advance

I know what you are going through. I did the same thing for a while. What I was doing wrong was trying to hard to get into it. I found that sometimes going into it without thinking a bunch about the lift helped. Take my rest and then just do it. No standing around getting prepared for to long. It has to do with the motivation curve. JM Blakley wrote an interesting article on the subject about a year ago.

I am also accustom to getting a deep breath when I deadlift so I can't even use a belt. Sucks. I actually lift less with a belt

if I..

try to get too psyched up i know it throws me off, also if i hit too much ephedrine i will not perform well, i just sit back and listen to a little of my fave music, and when its time to bang it, thats when i go to work.
idk, its just how i do it

frk

try to sit and visualize the lift you are about to o and prepare for it,i don't yell and scream before an attempt.......

You see so many people get all bugged out and geared up, they are bouncing of walls to psych themselves up for a lift, if you ask me its a waste of energy , I am a meditation type person, I stay very cool and calm on the outside yet on the inside I am ballistic ready to explode, but my explosion takes place with bar in hand not before I grab the bar.

When I went to my first meet I saw some guys curse at the bar, even kick the bar, one guy cirlced the bar yelling how he was going to kill it.

I can underdstnd a little pacing back and forth but not blowing friggin steam out of your nose right before the lift.

Just my little 2 cents

Thanks guys...I guess I was more worried about getting ready for the lift than the lift itself....if that makes sense.

P.S. I have trouble reseting between reps on heavy deads and rack pulls....

Any tips for hitting heavy reps on deads....

thanks

Why do reps, I think your better off doing singles, thats what I have read and been told. I could be wrong, I only do singles.

For dead I walk around the platform until I get a calm and clear focus on the task at hand. Also I only try to think about the bar and not the weights on it. Then I get my feet set take a deep breath then lean over and grip the bar. Let out about half the breath drop your hips breath in and fire. I pretty much do the walking thing on all my lifts when I am going for a max. While I am walking around I recite the vikings warrior prayer to myself. Get chalk walk towards the bar and clap off the excess chalk in one loud clap. that kind of helps bring everything into a clear focus. The main thing is to not get too worked up otherwise your lift won't go right.

For me, it depends on the lift and what attempt it is. If it is my opener, then I'm almost asleep when I get up there. However, if it is my 2nd ro 3rd, I am on fire. For the dl I do thecomplete opposite -- I have to stay calm or I'll blow the lift.

different strokes for differnet folks

my partner like me to yell, scream, and smack him around.

i like silence..... i pray to JESUS and ask for something like the Serenity prayer

"Lord, help me to give all i have, let me be smart enough not to injur myself, and remember i cant do this without you."

puts things into perspective for me.

if i can visualize the lift ....the I usually can get it

but if I dont have enough focus for me to see it happening....then i wont get it.....

I have good and bad days when I lift. Usually if I miss an attempt, it really fires me up to go at it again. Only problem is...if you miss an attempt in strongman...there is no 2nd or 3rd attempt.

I visualize someone like Kovaks hurting my girl and I can usually acheive whatever needs to be done.

I'm kind of meditation guy too. If you're at all familiar with yoga, there's something called child's pose. it's very relaxing. i just do that for like 5-10 minutes before i big lift and just try to focus and think of how i'm going to execute. Sometimes i throw on some tunes while i'm doing this. it also strectches your back, hip flexors, and glutes. Something worth considering. Cheers
