"The Shadow" stopped by last night . . . and his first order of business is threatening to ban Glenn Pendlay.

You know Glenn -- the most respected, most experienced poster on the training forum. You know, the guy who coaches olympic-level lifters and has been involved in strength sports for many years as both coach and competitor. You know, the guy we hope will critique our vids when we post 'em. You know, the guy who's comments are always positive, inspiring, and spot on. You know, the guy who knows more about olympic weightlifting than pretty much anybody posting online. But, yeah, maybe we should ban him b/c he's offering personal training now. Unbelievable.

How many mods have EVER offered helpful assistance in the training forum? How many have stopped by your journal and offered useful insight? But one stops by last night and does nothing but threaten to ban Glenn. Nicely done, The Shadow. Thanks for your support. Glenn is really a threat, you know. Banning him would be really helpful. Fact is, his offering on-line assistance is MORE helpful than any of the other CRAP that gets posted here daily. If he comes on here and lets us know he's got a book coming out, are you going to ban him? Because guess what? That book will probably be more helpful than anything else we get on here . . . and that's not b/c he's God, but b/c most of us are just feeling our way through this stuff, trying our best to learn w/ the resources at hand. And having support from, and access to, such a well-respected coach as Glenn is just an amazing resource. You should thank your lucky fucking stars that he's even posting here.

i saw that too. pretty weak actually. for the longest time there were others posting email addy's for online diet consultation, and others doing distance training. hell, i even see links to other boards. if there will be a fall back on "where do we draw the line?" or "board policy..." then time to do in people's signatures and profiles for anything fitness related that could generate revenue or take away from EF for everyone, not just because you happened to stumble upon a post.

I thought it was kind of cool to see the a guy a whole exercise was named after posting on our boards, but maybe I am weird.
 
I said something similar in a PM to The Shadow last night (albeit somewhat more diplomatically ;) ).

Nate brings up a good point that I touched on in that PM about where on the continuum you draw the line, but as he said, as it currently stands, it would be inconsistent (and a huge detriment to the forum) to ban Glenn.

OK we have two problems here

1) Glenn broke the rules on advertising. They're not well publicized and it's very understandable that, having become a known and respected member here he'd have no qualms making such a post. More especially since earlier posts mentioning a course he was running received only approval and generous comments.

2) Threatening to ban him comes directly from one source: we have no active resident mod. We've been complaining as a body about this for months. I've no doubt that Shadow acted with the best intentions of everyone in mind (we really don't want spammers around) but, not being a regular here, he's reacted in a manner that a resident mod wouldn't. Banning Glenn would be to no-one's advantage and would be an incredible loss. Shadow's not to blame, the fact that we have no mod is the cause and this needs to be resolved.
 
There was even a guy around a few months back called 'Ross Loves Money" he was transparently not on the level and was tolerated for the longest time before getting any action taken. This situation is just shoddy.
 
Okay, Shadow's post was not phrased as it should have been. I've brought it back in line with policy.

That said, Proto, your reaction is also out of line. If you think a mod screwed up and needs to be told off, that's MY job.

Glenn is definitely not some tool. He earnestly helps people and they genuinely improve. On a personal note....he's a great guy and he could have been pm'ed (since he was still online) and told about the policy instead of the public "reprimand." I'm sure he would have deleted his post. Anyone who has been on this board (training) would know of Glenn and his contributions and could have been more courteous and professional. It would be like some mod from C&C going over to the women's board and embarrassing one of the reputable ladies there....Shadow wouldnt think its appropriate because he knows the forum.
 
easy guys. you know me. i'm a bit of a bastard, so don't take too much offense when i call you a tool. or a douche. it's like a greating, of sorts.......but i am getting a little tired of the Mod/Witch hunt. i don't even think the Shadows ever spoken to me or posted in one of my threads, but he always was helpful to others....
 
best bet is to keep calm and just know that our opinions were voiced. Since The Shadow isn't here, its not fair to rack up a bunch of bashing or "and furthermore" (guilty as charged).

Just wanted to post to support Protobuilder's thread, I agree 100% with him and the way it was worded.....also posting to support Glenn. As far as training, it isn't often you get a world-class coach to offer input for free on a discussion board.......again, I think it is an issue of no mods being on the training forum, plus this is a 'bodybuilding site' which was kind of hijacked by us functional strength trainees, so to put it in a way those who only know bodybuilding would understand, the disrespect Glenn was shown is sort of similar to banning Charles Glass for posting info. about BB training, thats why the harsh reaction from those of us who really only post on the training board.

I see everything took a more respectful, diploamtic turn, but I missed this at its height, and just wanted to offer more support.

Very good point, we've been asking for a mod that is actually in this forum daily and knows what's going on here for the longest time. It would be a shame to loose such a great resource like Glenn Pendlay because a mod (who is never here) disrespected him like that.

I still can't believe that the likes of Glenn Pendlay takes the time to even post here, it is a honor to read his posts.

If we had a mod (one of the people we suggested) here that knows the forum and who he is, it could have been handled in a much better way.

I really hope this doesn’t discourage Glenn form posting here. And it is good to see the post is now changed.

Good analogy. I honestly have no clue who Charles Glass is and on seeing such a username would offer no glimmer of especial respect. It'd come as no surprise that your typical mirror-jockey (no disrespect intended) would not have heard of the great Glenn Pendlay.

I still recall everyone's astonishment the day that Glenn joined here.
 
Nicely said, everybody. I hope it's clear that our problem isn't with The Shadow, it's with the circumstances that made an incident like this inevitable. Namely, as BW said, this forum, despite being one of the largest on EF, has no regular mods.

digger, as others have mentioned, the lack of moderators has been a persistent complaint here but likely hasn't been noticed by mods/admins since it's usually a tangential topic within other threads. Some administrative input on this issue would be appreciated.

I think I know what it is......granted posting info on personal training is 'technically' a forum violation, the vast majority who make the training board what it is, have great respect for Glenn and would view training under him a once in a lifetime opportunity.....the fact that his post was so quickly reported and he was threatened with being banned set people off because he truly is a world-class coach and most saw it as disrespectful, like he was a spamming non-contributor, where if the mod in question actually spent time on here , he would have most likely handled things more diplomatically from the get-go...... if you don't know the caliber of coach he is, thats fine, but if you spent an hour a day at most 'moderating' one of your busiest forums you'd probably have handled it differently. ALL the inane, useless shit that is allowed to clutter the board that goes untouched because the mods simply aren't here....then something helpful, that is technically a violation gets nailed, while things like "Poll: Who has teh bigger gunz$: Brad Pitt or Vin Diesel?" or "HELP!!! I have nipple hair and inner pec fat" are let go.....while they aren't violations of policy, they are violations of common sense and intelligence and if mods showed training forum posters more respect and cleaned up inane bullshit and actually got to know the training board a little better, then the respect would be returned I think.

Anyway, My vote is AI for mod.
 
First of all, thanks to all the people who have said kind words about me, I really appreciate it.

I wasnt aware that I was breaking any rules by posting that I am doing online training. Had I known that this was against the rules, I wouldnt have done it. Ive mentioned this in a couple of different places, with no problems, and assumed it wouldnt be a problem here. Obviously not the case.

I dont think I am "owed" the courtesy of being able to break the rules, if that was against the rules, then a moderator or anyone really who knew the rules would have been right and correct to take the post down and PM me and inform me of the rule.

No, I didnt think it was polite to do it the way shadow did it (i think he actually called me "dude"!), but people are different and what might be taken as disrespectfull by one person may well have NOT been meant that way by another...

What would seem reasonable, would be to take the offending post down. Since it is against the rules to advertise, and as long as the post is up, Im still advertising!!! If a moderator reads this, maybe shadow, will you just delete the post completely?
 
It's all been said already, but as another regular, I also wanted to show my support and back PB's post and BW's summary of where we're at.

We need a resident mod, chosen from one of the regulars.

LMFAO!! I damn near fell out of my chair on that one. That's exactly what I was 'trying' to convey.

I'm glad Glenn has seen this and understands that his presence is very much appreciated. "Most" guys on here are, and always will be, amateurs. And not very "gifted" amateurs either. LoL But we like to lift, we try hard, and we're learning. It's really helpful to have comments from coaches like Glenn and other more "gifted" atheletes like Illuminati, BiggT, etc. I've never been involved in athletics of any sort (check my journal and you'll understand why, LoL), so its really awesome to actually get help from a national level coach. It's unbelievable actually. That's why it got under my skin so bad that an "outsider" would just crap all over it. I'm glad Digger cleaned it up. I agree completely that it would make a big difference to have a training forum mod. And it needs to be someone w/ some experience, who's willing to help, and posts positive, well thought out comments. That makes most of us ineligible. LoL And it makes AI the absolute worst person for the job, although he'd certainly clean up the garbage. LoL

This board is run for money. It doesn't make a lot, and it's very expensive to run, comparatively speaking.

Thus the sensitivity about any revenue generated from this board for which "a cut" is not received.

I think the staff here realize you're not going to be adding zeroes to your income from that one post, and are content to let it lie.

Don't worry about it, and welcome!

Well you seem to have done the research... I'd suggest a good antioxident topical to take care of those destructive UV rays from the tanning salon,though.

You and introspective need to step back and simmer down.

If you bothered to search back a couple of years - The Shadow was espousing the Old School training system (5x5) back when all the HIT'ers were running rampant on this board completely bashing every contrary post.


So actually - you can thank Shadow for helping out the training board and being fairly even keeled during alot of b.s. (much like the tough guy comments being posted here about him). As much as I appreciate GlennPendlay's input here - it is a matter that should be handled between him and Shadow - Digger if need be.


And while we are at it - my mod vote goes for WalkingBeast -just for you Protobuilder.
 
I couple of things:

1 - Unless someone is a specific sponser - there is to be NO ADVERTISING....this has and will apply to anyone, from Nelson on down the line...it is consistent acton.

2 - I verified(from administration) that he isn't a current or past sponsor.

3 - I would have deleted the post had it been anyone else - so he did get better treatment than another non-sponsor, even after confirmation that he is/was not a sponsor - the post stood.


Intersting that those who are most vocal on this thread, never thought about shooting over a pm to me about it.


IMO - bottom line is this:

The lock(and the delete had I choose that route) were in-line with current policy.

My original comment was also in-line with how I PERSONALLY deal with such posting that are against poilcy....those who know me realize that, as do most older members, as I have doner the same thing on this forum for years

You have been around for about 9 months or so.

Feel free to ask some older members and mods about my training knowledge...Im sure Bfold and others might have some interesting things to say to you.

The reason I dont post on here anymore is that a lot of folks get their thongs in a wad as each person thinks that their "way" is the best, especially the tension between the bbers and the plers.

It was this was 5 years ago when I first joined, and its still that way now.

IMO - one of the reasons this forum is currently on life-support is general estrogen laden actions and infighting that leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

I think that the "Shadow is a douche bag" thoughts and posts are actually a bit encouraging.....it at shows that there is at LEASTa flicker of life left in this forum

I Googled Glenn Pendlay and can see the concern about losing him from EF. He is very well respected.

I wonder if he even knows about this matter and what his reaction is.

Seems to me that all this was just a mistake that can be easily corrected among reasonable people talking to each other. If required, some simple apologys and life goes on.

As for the issue of not enough Mods ... or matching participation with expertise ... Isn't this easily corrected? I'm sure that Admin can select and invite the best matches. I've seen a number of lists of people who really want the assignment and are qualified. They may not have the most k and be the most clever, but they post and reply with intelligence, and want what may be a tough job. What am I missing?
