Back! Update and questions on locating coach...

Hey everyone!

I disappeared over the holidays. We got SO busy, and I got involved with some side projects. I've been eating fairly well, but am going to start my journal up again here in a bit. I have some questions:

A gem of a job kind of fell in my lap, so I took it, starting at the beginning of the year. Hubby isn't thrilled (he preferred me at home), but he's coping. My quesiton is about time management. I am having a hard time fitting in my work-outs now. My goal has been to get up at 4:15 and go while the kids are in bed, but weather, being-tired, and other factors keep getting in the way. Going after work is not a good option - my 4 year old is really worn out and the stimulation of the gym after school and extend-a-care for 2 hours results in a melt-down.

So what do you think about a 2 day split? Upper body on Sat/legs on Sun, and then a few 20 minute session of cardio in the early AM during the week? Feasible/not a good idea/other suggestions?

Next question - I am hoping to do a figure show later this year, but the only lead I had on a good personal trainer/coach is no longer available. How do I go about finding someone experienced in doing shows? I can't find any at my gym, as Gold's has gotten tough on outside trainers coming in.

TIA!

a two day split may sound reasonable with few days cardio if you just want to maintain... however, my opinion is that if you're planning to do a figure show, you may need a lot more training than that.

Well, once I find a trainer, and get some firm goals for competing I'll of course adjust accorrdingly. I'm mainly worried about the present-tense right now. I'd really like some feedback on what others with families and small children and jobs do to fit everything in. Time management, ordering my day, and finding a schedule that works in the immediate time frame is my first goal.

Yes like Nikkita said if you're planning on doing a figure show you're going to have to find more time for the gym.

And to be honest I'm alittle insulted that you think you could do a show while only training twice a week. We bust our asses in the gym to get ready for a show. I know you probably didn't mean it the way it sounded and you are just trying to find a way to train with your busy schedule but nonetheless it's abit insulting to competitors.

Competitors also (usually) do cardio 2x a day for a couple of weeks before a show. So you would either need some cardio equipment at home, or 2x a day at the gym.

In your situation, it would be best if you could get up early and hit the gym....tired or not.

Competition prep is somethign where you have to have the time because you are mentally & physically training 24/7. Every time I've done it, it has been at the expense of my job or been scheduled when my work load was light and I had the vacation time available to do it.

Please tell me you're kidding? You took my question that personally? #1 - I wrote that I wanted to do it LATER this year, AND that I hadn't even found a coach yet. #2 - I also wrote back to Nikkita that I am looking for information on a 2 day split for the PRESENT TIME, not LATER.

Until I locate a trainer, and get a current assessment and some input on where I need to be in order to even BEGIN training for something as strenuous as a competition, I am trying to make a schedule that works with as little interruption to my family as possible.

I'm not sure why my post elicited such a response from you....? Perhaps I should clarify that I am not looking to compete as a lifestyle or career move. I just want to compete once to say that I was in good enough shape to do it and that I did it. The idea that I was insinuating that you or anyone else didn't put in a lot of hard work is baffling to me.

I would expect that anyone who is serious about their health and their workouts BUSTS THEIR ASS, whether they compete or not. That is, in part, what prompted my question - since I feel like I"m not doing enough by going on the weekends. But, making it to the gym during the week is iffy for me, at best, since my toddler has mommy radar and seems to wake up the moment I'm out of the house (which upsets my husband who is going to bed about that time).
