ATF squat question->

My girl and I were at the gym doing squats and this short powerlifter guy kept giving us looks. So...he finally says that we should use less weight and go all the way down to the floor or squats dont do anything. Now, I would not want to look like a powerlifter(well he was fat and short anyway) but I am sure he is probably right about the squats. We were doing them till we were parallel to the floor. Should I do them ATF with just the bar at first? I was only using 160-190 anyway but I know I cannot do that much to the floor- no way. Plus I have a sensitive back right now cause of bad sciatica in my left leg. What should I do? Lower the weight and do them lower? I have a hard time taking advice from guys that look completely out of shape.

Remember that that guy is fat and out of shape because of his diet...not from his training. If he is a powerlifter he will not be doing ATF squats either.

When I do high bar squats I go to the floor. I mainly do box squats though...I feel that they more serve the purpose that I need them to that way...

funny thing is that my ATF high bar squats are sorta like box squats in that my shin is at 80-85 degree angle, almost vertical. I move my butt first and back when I lower down. I feel no quad at all, its all hammies and glutes!

I'm changing my form though - I need quads!

i'll change it up alot. i do front squat to the floor fairly light on my light day, but i do low bar squats to parallel and heavy (for me).

ive consistently gained strength and stability going to parallel.

everyone has their preferences. do both. lift a bit heavier going to parallel and then take a day where you go balls to the ground lighter. its only going to be read as an unaccustomed stimulus for your body to adapt to....aka progress.

Does this guy have your body? Does he know what you are training for? Sounds to me that he is more concerned about your workout than his own. He needs to mind his own business. Do only what is comfortable for you.

Thanks, that is how I felt too. My girl was pretty pissed at the guy for coming over and telling us how to lift- the guy was fat so I mean WTF?! I will try doing some lower but I am trying to get my quads to grow, not so much my ass.

FULL squats make everything grow more...everything.
