As with anything, moderation is the key as the possible side effects of certain additives may not be experienced by all people. You will just have to use your own judgement as to what you want to consume and in what quantities:
Potassium citrate: Used to make the acidity level of the product lower than it otherwise would be normally. Side effects can range from upset stomach, nauses, and gastrointestinal problems. If you have a diet high in salt, heart disease, high blood pressure or kidney problems then the side effects may be more severe.
Aspartame: An artificial sweetener that has a mixture of opinions as to its safety. I'll just tell you what's in it and then you can decide for yourself. Asparatame is made up of 40% aspartic acid, 50% phenylalanine and 10% methanol. Aspartic acid is an amino acid but because it is introduced into the body in a singular form (not part of a protein source) it causes calcium to enter certain cells and destroys them. For individuals who are unable to oxidise phenylalanine, it becomes a neurotoxin in the body and destroys brain tissue. When methanol breaks down in the body it produces formaldehyde which is known to be a carcinogen (cancer causing compound).
Potassium benzoate: Used as a food preservative to kill mold, yeast and bacteria. It is also used as an alternative to sodium benzoate when the finished product is expected to be low in sodium.
Acesulfame potassium: An artificial sweetener. Sometimes listed on products as Acesulfame K. It is a combination of acetoacetic acid and potassium. Acetoacetic acid is usually found in the body when you go into a starvation mode or very prolonged periods of physical activity.
Malic acid: Usually found in most fruits and is used as a flavouring agent in foods. Sometimes it will be listed on foods as E296. It is also used to clean the surface of your teeth when you go to get a filling. In the cosmetic industry, it is used for facial peels. In combination with magnesium, malic acid can help individuals who are suffering from fibromyalgia (widespread pain in muscle tissues).
In gerneral, flavoured drinks will either be the result of sugar or an artificial agent (sweetener and/or flavouring). You would be better sticking to water.
