I have had this exercise in my routine after back work since day one. I do them with my shoulders on the bench, legs extended with hips dropped low, db above .... then drop the db behind my head and stretch. Pull it back to above my eyes thinking only elbows moving so I don't involve triceps.

3 X 8 with 85 lb db.

I firmly believe this exercise widens the rib cage, giving your chest a deep, wide, full look.

If nothing else ... it is a great stretch.
 
Just a casual overview of some muscles involved:

Primary muscles involved:
Triceps
Pectoralis
Lats
Serratus
Deltoid
Forearms

Stablizers & secondary muscle groups:
Abs (rectus ab, intercostal, transverse ab)
Neck flexors (Sternocleidomastoid)
biceps
neck extensors


I'm sure I'm leaving a lot out there.
 
There is plenty of upper back stress on the scapula muscles like the teres major and minor, but insignificant stress on the deltoid, biceps, forearms, or neck extensors.
 
I used to do them for the lats

But they put quite some stress on the deltoids and and other exercices are much more effective
So I no longer do them
 
Wow, pulled my topic from February. I guess Ill add that I did put them in my routine, but mostly I just like the stretch.

Yeah their good for a stretch but I have never noticed any benefit as far as muscle gain. I stopped doing them years ago.

BTW where in Ft Collins are you? I am from Loveland is why I ask.

They are a great stretch IMO, but they never did anything for me either. It is definately one of those 'exercises of feeling'.
