Im looking for a used ACE Personal Trainer Home Study Program 3rd edition. Interested in taking the test but its extremely expensive. Ill even pay to rent it. PM me. Thanks guys!

Please tell me you need that certification for a job and not for your own personal training business. The ACE test is more of a math test than anything configuring BF%, etc-very little to do with being a good, knowledgeable trainer. I think revealing just how worthless these so called certifications are to your clients will gain you more respect in the long run. Same goes for trainers with Exercise Physiology degrees. They can acquire this degree w/o ever setting foot in the gym. How on earth does that make them a good trainer? Most people that are impressed by degrees or certifications don't realize how easy they are to acquire. PT Certifications are kind of like the ad that reads Karate Instructors Wanted: No experience necessary. Any shmo can sit through a seminar and pass a test. Hand them a clipboard and voila'-you're a PT. As ridiculous as it sounds, it's true.

If you want to truly be successful as a personal trainer all you need to do is convince people that you're capable of helping them achieve their fitness goals and that you are worth the $$$ they invest in you to do so. Even PT's that look like shit can do it. I see it all of the time. Of course looking good will speak volumes about your abilities and clients should come rather easily. But there will always be the dumbasses that continue to hire "certified" PT's that are at lower levels of fitness than many of the clients that they train.

Sorry for the thread jack-I just don't want you buying into this certification crap if you don't need to.

That's a tough call. A lot of Gyms and health oriented people recognize ACE as the standard. But, I have to agree with Bigcracker. I was ACE certified ( I since have let my certification lapse ) and it was kinda lame. The test was tough, but it honestly didn't have a lot to do with being a good trainer. I was a horrible test taker in high school/college. I had a tough time with the test. A lot of the questions are BS. IF you are a good student/test taker, the test will seem easy. Oh yeah, I had the study guide and it didn't really help at all. Maybe a 1/4 of the material was covered in the books. Sorry, if I still had it, I'd glady give it to you. Good Luck.

OK good. As long as you know it's a joke. Most big chain gyms require it for insurance reasons. Still, I hate seeing people pump $$$ into this bogus organization. You should see all the roly poly fat asses that showed up for the test and seminar. I'm talking cellulite, apple shaped body fuckers that truly believe taking that test and passing it is everything they'll ever need to know. Then after they get a job at a gym they talk shit about about the uncertified, independent, trainer/pre contest BB at 6% BF that's booked with clients all day long. And how stupid people must be to hire a trainer that's not certified.

...so I tell my sister like a week ago, to quit using heavy weight for her abs. she scoffs at me and goes about her routine... yesterday night she gets back from the gym and she tells me "wow, this trainer told me i shouldnt to weight for my abs anymore"... AND SHE LISTENS... my wife then says to us "she probly just had to hear from some trainer she thought was hot" and my sister replies "no he actualy looked like a bitch"...
sometimes i wonder
sorry your post reminded me about this and i had to rant...
but most, not all, commercial personal trainers SUCK. i see them babysitting their clients, not even paying attention the their form, looking off into la la land...
good luck with the job though... maybe you can teach the other trainers a thing or two.

He's right most trainers do suck the big one. However, the general public has so little education on working out and diet they rarely can distinguish between the good trainers and the bad ones. You'd think people would find someone that looks excellent with a few references to help them achieve their fitness goals and they'd be dominant in the field, but that's not always the case. Many newbies in the gym are intimidated by someone that looks good and their lack of confidence seems to distort their common sense. So they pick a normal/out of shape trainer. A lot of good trainers lose clients when the bash how bad the other trainers suck. Sometimes clients think that if you'll talk shit about the people you work around, you'll surely talk shit about your clients too. PT is a cut throat biz. Lately Core seems to be all the rage. This is awesome for good trainers because you can do "in home" personal training at your client's house because little actual equipment is involved. That means your only overhead is gas and windshield time-no pay out to a gym. Most peeps can get an excellent workout with a big rubber ball and a dumbell set up to 15 lbs. You can provide these things for your clients, or offer a cut rate if they purchase their own from you(at a profit of course). Same goes for supplements if you purchase them wholesale. You can also offer discounts for neighbors they refer to you. This is excellent cuz you can bang out 2-3 sessions back to back all on the same street=cha-ching!!! Another benefit is you can be a nazi about what's in their refrigerator, which will discourage them from cheating on their diets. lol When done right, PT can be a profitable biz and for the most part people will respect what you do for society in the same way they respect paramedics, Dr's, physical therapists, chiros, etc.

I have the second edition, which has tapes. I agree that you can easily be a personal trainer without the ACE certification. HOWEVER, when I was doing research on which certification had the most credence, ACE repeatedly came up. It is nationally recognized and all of the major personal trainers (celebrity trainers, video fitness, etc) are ACE-certified.

My set has everything that the 3rd edition has (completely unused) except that it has tapes and not CDs.

Thanks
