Anyone listen to jazz?

I am buying a gift for someone, they are not the biggest jazz fan, but they recently got miles davis "blue miles" and loved it...

now I know that they probably should be getting stuff in albums, like starting with miles davis "kind of blue" then maybe "sketches of spain" and proceeding like that, but this would take forever and also way more $$ than I would like to spend for this. plus to be honest, I am pretty sure they are not THAT into it, they just like the music...

I wanted to see if there were any compilations that would be suitable for various well known artists...

for instance, I was thinking of getting them "essential" charlie parker, and "the very best of john coltrane"... and maybe a few (2-3) others, and I wanted to see if there were any other collections/compilations that would be highly reccomended...

I know there is the ken burns collections, but the two I already decided on seem to be more well liked and judged better samplings by people that have heard more than just the collections...

any other good ideas for any of the more well known (and more listenable by someone with a beginners interest) artists?

if i had the choice of either listening to jazz or having The Shadow recite his poetry to me....

I'd shoot myself in the head.

Getting ready to copy a few CD's right now actually. Diana Krall and Jane Monheit

David Brubeck and Jack Dejonette. I think that's how you spell Jacks last name.

Jack is just a drummer, but he has some good solo albums with no words, just his trio playing. awesome.

Brubeck is good. Yes take 5 is a bit overplayed, but for a good reason. It only took 5 tries.

go to www.jaztrax.com they have everything U need

I should really put you in the red for giving me a bogus link, but I will just set you to 0 instead...

LOL at stilleto - it is good after a serious leg workout and you feel like puking and system of a down will send you over the edge...

SoKlu - Any good billie holliday albumn you would reccomend as a great "if you only had one" albumn?

Erzulie - Diana Krall I know they like, but I was hoping to get something more classic rather than contemporary...

Whiskey - I totally want to get some Dave Brubeck, but I couldn't decide on what to get... (was looking for a bigger complilation) I take it you are saying just to get em take 5? Jack Dejonette sound interesting, I will have to give that a listen sometime when I get a chance...

..

yeah, or if you want to have a migraine and don't feel like hitting yourself with a 2x4 again.

You could try The Blue Box Blue Note's Best it's a box set from the famous blue note label. Blue Note also puts out other compilations that you may find are better suited for your needs. On a side note the David Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan live double disc is fantastic. Good Luck!
