Anyone eat raw eggs?

:chomp: I was thinking about throwing a couple into my weight gainer shakes. Anyone do this? Is the risk of salmonilla (sp.?) high, or, like most other things, is it blown out of proportion?

I almost always put 3 or 4 whole raw eggs into my weight gainer shakes along with cottage cheese, peanut butter, protein powder, ice cream, and other stuff and I have never been sick off it. My gas smells really bad but that is about it.

you'll get answers from both sides of the fence on this one and it will never be fully settled.....so if you wanna add them in then add them in, ive done it from time to time and im fine (or as fine as my definition of the word may be)....good luck but some questions will NEVER have straight answers just alot of opinions

lol... yup.

my experience has been that my body does NOT like to digest uncooked whole eggs... it doesn't make people's nose around me happy campers either.

Egg Beaters in my morning shake concoktion is not abnormal and my body seems to degest those just fine.

shit i have been eating raw eggs for 10 years i have never had a problem. Im up to 10 aday atm, im just to friggin lazy to cook 7 carton of eggs weekly.

raw whole eggs good, i supplement with biotin too just incase altough the egg yolk is naturally a very high source of biotin

3 protein shakes a day.....2-3 eggs in each gooood protein and esential fat

You will not get salmonella from eating raw eggs.

You can. It's just unlikely.

Be aware that raw egg WHITES can, if eaten just about every day for years can contribute to a Biotin deficiency. Once again, unlikely. But possible.

Started adding a couple of yolks to my egg white + whey shakes in the morning... if I keel-over from salmonella poisoning, some heads are gonna roll *grin*

As a side note, I always thought that fats weren't a good idea in the morning, since your body is in a catabolic state and you want to nourish it immediately upon waking up... whey protein is digested quickly, but not so quickly in the presence of fiber or fat... anyone have any info on this?

Also just read an article suggesting to have a small whey protein shake (with water) as soon as you wake up, then shortly after have your normal breakfast (eggs, oatmeal, etc.).. any thoughts?

I usually listen to the Rocky soundtrack while I eat my raw egg whites!!! Then I go outside and chase my chicken around the empty parking lot with my grandpa yelling at me, telling me Im gonna eat fire and shit thunder!!! :FRlol:

The risk of salmonella comes from the outside of the shell, not whats on the inside. Just make sure you wask your hands good after you crack them and you will be fine.
Except for the gas! Its sooo bad. One time I nearly cleared out a movie theatre!

You cannot digest a raw egg because of the Avidin found in it. The only way to break down the Avidin is to cook or pasteurize it. Pasteurization is done by heating the egg up to 134 degrees for 3.5 minutes, this will break down the avidin and kill off salmonella. I drink liquid (not raw) egg whites every day... It's not that bad, in fact, it has no taste at all. Another good thing about it is that it takes 5 hours to fully digest, so it gives you a steady stream of amino's.

now we are cooking. this is true. It needs to bee cooked or at least pasteurized. i find that the liquid egg whites, when they are super cold, go down real easy and virtually have no taste

Is there something about raw eggs that are better for you than cooked eggs that I do not know about? I kinda like them cooked myself!

Amen, finally someone brings this up. You CANNOT digest raw egg whites. Egg beaters are different because they are pasturized. Drinking raw egg whites cracked from the shell is no better than drinking a glass of water with salt in it.

Thank god! Raw eggs is some nasty shit! Thats coming from a guy that thinks sushi is the best food on the planet.

Sort of on/sort of off topic but is there a reason why eggs are better than say a nonfat protein powder?

I have a strange problem with eggs too (but not of the gaseous variety) if I eat eggs regularly -- say at least two a day for a week or so -- chicken starts tasting REALLY weird to me, it smells/tastes like, burnt rubber. No other way to describe it. I thought I had bought a bad package of chicken the first time it happened, but it's happened more than once and it has to do with regular egg consumption. When I cut back on eggs, the rubber taste goes away.

Yeah, fucking weird, I know *sigh*

false

I dont know why anyone would eat raw eggs. There are so many products out that can give you enough Protein without eating raw eggs. I know some of the stuff is expensive, but it seems the digestability and the safety of retail protein products outweighs eating raw eggs...JMHO!! :chomp:

I dont see you with any info to be backing up your claim either.

Hankes, I don't like a big bowl of snot either, but something doesn't sound right that raw egg whites can't be digested. Heating proteins denatures them....shortens the chains....and makes them more difficult to digest. Heating destroys many other nutrients that not only help foods digest, but also help the body stay healthy.

Here's what I found about Avidin:

"Avidin is a toxic protein found in egg white that binds with biotin, found in egg yolk. In biochemical applications, streptavidin, which binds very tightly to biotin, is often used in place of avidin.

Relationship Between Avidin and Biotin
Avidin is a glycoprotein that has a very strong affinity for biotin..., ...the highest known between any ligand and a protein, and, as such, prevents biotins absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Avidin is a tetrameric protein attaching four molecules of Biotin per tetramer.

Avidin-induced Biotin-deficient meals, especially those rich in egg white, make it impossible for biotin to be absorbed in the small intestine. Through the use of an enzyme, lyzine hydroxylase, and the intraveinous administration of avidinbiotin, complex biotin can be released into the system. Basically, Avidin is too large to be absorbed into the intestines, and by bonding tightly to Biotin, it makes the protein molecules of Biotin too large to pass into the intestine and get absorbed"

The amount of Avidin in one egg white is considered small, but the unavailable protein is that of Biotin in the yolk not the white and this is not involving the albumin. With just this information it reads to me that the egg white protein is not affected by biotin.

Here's a site that infers that the yolk has so much more biotin than the white as avidin, that it is not important.

That site also states that eggs are very easy to digest.

A better question might be 'How much protein is assimilable in a large raw or cooked egg?"

it doesnt take a biochemist to know that raw egg does not equal water
here are some links about raw egg consumption
http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/9/raw_eggs.htm
http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/raw-eggs.htm
http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chr...a_day_keeps_the_doctor_and_the_mafia_away.htm

those links are just from googling raw egg
I also rember we had to learn how to use differnt database search engines in bio and i looked up various studies on raw egg consumption, those studies did not find that raw egg=H20

Not if it is whey protien whey is better for you than eggs. Eggs is a close second. Protien types have a rating in which your your body can utilize the best its called the Biological Value. Whey is number one eggs actually is not far from it. Then beef, then chicken. I dont know the BV of fish but I am betting it is pretty high up. Dont know where goats and lizards fit in either. lol! you never know!

From that study it seems as though he is saying that raw egg yolks are ok, as well as eating the whole egg raw, but he does not seem to advocate eating just the white raw.

I am not going to argue the point because I don't really care that much. I like cooked egg whites, some don't. I have read some studies that say you can't digest raw eggs and some say you can.

All I know is that raw eggs will make you biotin deficient which will make your hair thin out in extreme cases, decrease insulin sensitivity, and make your ass smell like a dozen eggs left out in the trash in the middle of summer.

I prefer egg whites cooked form breakfast, then meat for the rest of the day. The only time that you REALLY should be having shakes anyway is pre and post workout in which whey is ideal.

To each there own however :)

correct eating just the raw egg white is stupid not because your body can't digest raw egg white but beacuse it will eventually lead to a biotin deficiencey, eating the whole egg will not. I was just replying to the fact that drinking a cup of 4 whole eggs is not the same as drinking a glass of water
