Electronic music is pretty old school. Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Schaeffer, Wendy Carlos, Karlheinz Stockhausen, etc.

Oldschool to me is 1940-50s for Pierre Schaeffer and the rise in popularity of synth based music in the 60s-70s.

Sometimes I catch myself listening to Bach and Beethoven. Symphonies and my all time favorite classical song moonlight sonata.

I have some odd tastes in music. U name it I listen to it on a regular basis. Except for country, I only listen to a very very few songs of that crap.

My hubby constantly has the XM on 81 BPM. I couldn't tell you the names, but yeah, I'm really starting to like dance/techno/ etc. Great for cardio.

Just thought of some names - iio? Is that how you spell it? I like alot of her stuff and let's see I like the song "as the rush comes" by motorcycle and "pon de replay" by that chic from Barbados.

as the rush comes is a classic song.

like two full moons and a trout by union jack.

techno is actually just beats and effects. None of the stuff mentioned is techno. Plastikman is awesome techno. I like one or two others.

most stuff here is trance. Trance is techno + melody. The rhythm and effects are diminished a bit and the emphasis is on melody.

House is techno+disco, which sounds a little trancey but the bass and beats are funkier and their are a lot of vocals. This starts to sound kind of gay in the worst examples, the most trite. DJ Sasha, the renaissance series and Farina are good inspired versions of this style. X-pander is a classic track.

Ambient techno is techno+ambient/experimental music. This is like Orbital, with the classic track belfast.

Modern trance like armin van buren, dj tiesto, Tales of the Unexpected vols 1 and 2 are good places to start.

Leftfield and IDM are the wierdo electronica/trance spin-offs. The most famous is Aphex twin. The best (as Flah pointed out elsewhere) is Autechre. Truly awesome. NOT uplifting at all.

I love trance.

It's like jazz man, takes a while to get into. That first listen is like a shock to the system, you don't know what's going on. Subsequent listens reveal more and more.

Small world. I've either produced or remixed breaks records or CD's for half of these guys. I've put out records for X and Hudia on their respective label.

I was not expecting to see a list of these names :Chef:

Yes, EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is great for cardio. Breaks (breakbeat) great for dancing.

the album "History Of Female Vocal Trance" is good. I think it is a 3 disk set. Payed 8 bucks for it at sam goody's, I would have gladly payed much more for it. Very good cd.

VNV nation is good

For me, after discovering trance 6 years ago, I've never looked back. I came to the realization there had to be something more out there. More specifically, my true love is psytrance. There is nothing that will make you work out harder and faster, IMO. I can run a thousand miles at 15% grade listening to that stuff. Of course its all a matter of opinion and personal taste. I respect everyone's unique taste in music. For me though, this music is my first true love, with lifting a close 2nd. I eventually became a DJ and then moved into production as is usually the natural progression for a lot of people that listen to this type of music. If you all wanted to try something different, I would be more than happy to put up some of my DJ sets that I've mixed that I listen to while I run. It certainly couldn't hurt to take a listen for yourself. Its good to try new things. :)

You know, this would make an awesome thread if we all did YSIs of some mixes. I think I'm going to get on that.

i have to have my daily delerium fix
esp the haunting etherical vocals of leigh nash
ie run for it, after all, and innocente

wow leigh nash has a solo album due this year
she was lead singer for six pence none the richer
what 13 years ago they came out
damn she's now 28 so she started at 15
she's a hottie and i love her voice
she and sarah mclachlin have me capitvated
yea it's not all techno but damn they added some credibilities to the likes of me so i could explore techno
my faves are delerium, chemical brothers, dj sammy,
would you consider garbage techno?
techno pop?

who cares. You like -- I like. :)

all techno is trash. All music is trash really. I love music. Play music. The older I get the more I realize, music is not for the artist, for me, for meaning, for politics . . . It is for you. It is entertainment. Are you entertained? Then it's good music. Is it electronic instruments in 4:4 with emphasis on the 2/4 beats? Then its techno.

Shut up and dance already. :)

i like techno to power walk to
lol

I didnt think this thread would take off like it has.
At parties when I throw on some Trance everyone looks at me like I have the plague!
Fuck em, Trance/Techno kicks major ass.

yep nickye
luv the trance. I get the same reaction. Trance is actually alternative, in some ways much more alternative than "death metal" or "hardcore" bands (which I also love). Your average metal show has all kinds of regular joes and their babes. You ever go to a namlook or richie hawtin spin? Freaks like me make that freak central, my friend. With all the dance pop, it's easy to forget that trance is so alternative at its core. It's essentially a music that worships alternative mind states and believe that music is like sound programming of neurochemistry. That's fucked up. Much more so than being angry at the establishment. You know something's going on (just like grunge) when the "man" has to make his candy-ass commercial version of a genre to protect the masses. . .

majutsu -- you are now my official trance homey.

snarling force -- nice! i haven't listened to your set yet, it's still DLing. but it makes me want to put up some of mine.

ok snarling force: you like to transition during breakdowns, dont you? that's what i can gather is going on from your set.

PS do you use vinyl?

make sure you post up the mixes casual. Love to hear them.

I don't mix, I try to produce tracks (very poorly). I'm very into psy/db and trance. I love trance, but do it the least well, probably because I'm not real happy/ecstatic person. I do the dark psy/ jungle thing tons better. But I luv a good trance. AND really love a good mix.

I need to dl snarling force's mix too.

i don't have anything that I'd stand by right now except for a 5-song trance-breaks set. All my mixes I made when I was significantly suckier than I currently am. but i'll keep you guys posted.

I am from LA went through the LA Rave Scene from 91-2000. Washed up and started body bulding. Went through Hardcore, Jungle, Breakcore ect ect. I visited New York for the first time. Worked out at Power House Gym in Farmingdale. They placed some techno station that just floored me. I have not turned back. Just when you think you grow out of things you get hit with a flash back. Nothing beats working out to Hardbanging Techno with those lovely 909 kicks.

electronic stuff i listen to:

minimal, banging techno / detroit-techno / tech-house/hard-house
funky-/disco-/acid-/deep-house
90's hard trance, some goa/psy, deep/dark trance

then the fringe stuff: ambient / idm / power noise / soundscapes / industrial/ebm/goth

and (happy-)hardcore / nu-nrg(?) / gabber etc. to work out to :)

that about sums it up!

For all lovers of trance, you need to check out the 'Global Underground' albums.
I would highly recommend: Nick Warren, Dave Seaman and Danny Howells.

Also checkout:
Abysm - Future Love
Deep Dish Feat. Stevie Nicks - Dreams (Axwell Remix)
Kruder & Dorfmeister - Original Bedroom Rockers
Yoshimoto - Do What U Du (Trentemoller Remix)
Zero 7 - Home (Ben Watt Remix)
Soul Avengerz - Love You Feel (Original Mix)
Granite & Phunk - My Heart (Seamus Haji & Paul Emanuel Remix)
Granite & Phunk - Knock U Over (Original Mix)
Trick & Kubic Feat. Valeska - Easy (Original Mix)

Sasha and John Digweed's 1997 album Northern Exposure is also not bad if you can find a copy...
