I work for a recently well publicized Biotech company, and I will tell you that it depends on what stage they are in, but from start to finish it takes years just to get it approved for testing.

i understand that the US FDA takes a long time. longer than the counterpart in the EU and most countries. im hoping that it may come out sooner in japan or mexico.

Don't hold your breath. The genes associated with many diseases have been known for years and yet there are still millions of people suffering from these conditions with no effective treatment, much less a cure. While it is a long road from drug development to FDA approval, the road from genetic defect to drug development can be even longer and more winding.
