another B12 post (very odd question)

OK, so I've definitely been seeing the positive effects of B12...energy and appetite. Well, I was thinking about using it on my dog (German Shepherd). He is about 2 yrs old, and his appetite is lagging. I've talked numerous times to the VET about possible problems, but she says that "some dogs live to eat, and others eat to live". She also said not to worry unless I see a drop in his activity level...which I haven't. However, he is not the size he should be, and I often get comments:

Do you feed this dog?
Is he anorexic?

Basically what I am wondering is if there is any reason not to inject B12 into my dog? I will be adjusting the dosage to his bobdy weight. He's about 75lbs and so I was thinking, 0.5ml 2-3 times a week (~1000mcg - 1500mcg per week).

Also, are there any recommended places to shoot and needle size to minimize any kind of pain?

Karma for those that help...thanx

hey bro, I have an ex girlfriend that works for a vet. I'll ask her next time what and how to administer the b12. Although, if I were you, I'd consider getting some b complex.
on a side note, 75lbs isn't all that bad for a shepherd. I'm sure they can be bigger, but with the common hip displasia(sp?) in German Shepherds, the reduced weight may help him/her down the road.

you dont have to asperate b12 it can be used all 3 ways.

I would just grab the skin on his neck and inject where the fold is. Use 1ml per week or give him 1/2ml 2 times per week.

You may want to do it while he is eating and I bet he wont even feel it.

75 lbs is not really small for a german shephard.

the problem is most people's dogs are big fat slobs and that's what they're used to seeing. there are some strains that have been bred to be about 100 though...

If you can easily see his ribs, he may be underweight. If the are easily felt when touching his sides he is the correct weight, if you have to dig in to feel them (like most of the fat ass dogs out there :)) he is a fat slob.

I hope you're kidding about this, right?
The dog sounds fine and healthy, so why fuck with it?
Also -- who's to say that animals use B-12 the same way people do? It might have different effects.

austin is correct. You should be able to see an outline of there rib cage but not each individual rib. If that makes sence??? If your dog is hyper(which germans usually are not) I would go against the b12.

What kind of dog food do you feed him? I had a Doberman that I was feeding Science Diet and he had similarities to your Shepard.
I switched to a cheap brand from WalMart and it fattened him right up. The premium dog foods are formulated to reduce waste and maintain leaness.

The cheap dog food has more carbs than protein, and dogs turn carbs to fat the same way people do. That's why dogs who eat the cheaper stuff tend to be fatter.

Good points on all sides. Karma is coming.

According to AustinTX, he is underweight...I can definitely see individual rib-bones. At one point I was feeding him a lot of human food (fatty-shit that my Fraternity serves...that I have to pay for even though I hardly ever eat it...but that's another story), and I could see him putting on the weight, but it was probably all fat. He became out of shape, and couldn't keep up on the runs that we go on sometimes. Believe me, I've tried ALL kinds of food for him. He is a VERY picky eater. I have to chop some turkey, ham, burger, or some type of human food and mix it in with his dog food (Purina's Moist n' Meaty). He will NOT eat hard dog food!!!

Should not be a problem giving it to your dog. You may also want to give him an appetite stimulant as well.

Buy some Omega fatty oil and put it in his food also. He WILL get the shits. Not the painful ones.

Face away from your dog and wrap your left arm around and under his torso. Use a 1/2 - 3/4 inch 25ga. Hit him in his upper hindquarter while holding him in place with your left arm. He will not even flinch.

Sounds like he may be working you. He *will* eat hard dog food when he's hungry enough, it just may take 3 days. I would recommend cutting all the human food out (and canned dog food). Once he realizes that he can't hold out for fraternity/wet food, I'll bet he'll start eating a healthy amount of dog food. If you keep breaking down, he'll just starve himself for a couple of days until he gets a burger....

Good luck. ;)

Its really hard to keep him away from the human food, when I've got 70 other guys and their girlfriends telling me that he looks to skinny, and feeding him food when I'm not around.
