Here's a potentially dumb question: I've read about taking amino acids. What do they do? What is the recommended dose?

5'10, 165, lift heavy weight 4xweek, cardio has sucked ass lately (I know I should be doing more than I've been), diet is mostly clean. Want to increase muscle mass and also lose more fat (have lost 20 lbs recently). Will aminos help in that goal at all?

I would concentrate on one goal at a time. Personally, I would choose to lose the fat first, then put on the muscle.
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. When you lift heavy, your muscles will need to repair afterwards to grow. Amino acids help your muscles repair and grow. There are non essential and essential amino acids. Your body produces its own non essential amino acids, but you must supply essential amino acids through your diet.
You can take amino acids before and after you work out.
It will make your body be more in an anabolic state, which you need to create muscle.
I don't take them myself, my diet is fine the way it is.
 
I agree with both Psizzle and Trex. Gear at needtobuildmuscle.com is a great product if you're looking for an amino acid supplement. A lot of people swear by them. I've read that using glutamine before bed can enhance natural GH production, in addition to the recovery benefits Trex talked about. I've used several different products and I'm not sure, personally, I noticed a huge difference but I may not have taken them long enough to really notice either. My favorite was the BCAA powder you put in water but I liked that just because it was a change from water!! ;) I would probably look at a pre/post workout supplement of BCAA's if I was really trying to put on some muscle.
