I've been inspired by some a recent book I've read about some of the benefits of fasting. Has anyone tried going on a 7 day fast? How did you feel and more importantly how did you do it?

tried something called the "master cleanse" felt like crap the first day but at the end felt great. did not lose any strength. no solid food for 12 days.

So just the first day was bad?

i completed a three day fast and i felt like crap the whole time....tired, you get dizzy if u stand up too quickly. After the third day the hunger goes away...

not worth it if u ask me....I felt just the same after the fast as i did before

I ate nothing and drank water only

well 7 days is nothing...i am muslim...we fast usually in midd november-->midd december (about a month) from sun up to sun down...meaning you basically can't eat or drink ANYTHING (yes, even water) from like 4:30 AM (usually when the sun starts to come up) until ~6:20 pm (when the sun goes down in the season - it changes daily by a min or 2 mins) - i've just recently started lifting though...so i have yet to fast WHILE lifting and bodybuilding...so i imagine that would be hard since you need to "eat big to gain big" or whatever..

but it really does feel good when you do it...it gives you such control over your body when you're done and it's over...especially if you find it hard to be on a bodybuilder's diet...after fasting you're like i don't care WHAT i eat i just feel so lucky that i have food on the table...(so it makes eating the nasty-tasting food easier since it's better than having NO food/drink) and you won't give into temptations at all after fasting...your will power increases daily with your fast...

if this is the first time you're thinking of fasting, however, i suggest you take it slow...my first time i fasted it felt like such TORTURE and SUFFERING...my first day i was about 8 and i had to last from morning until like 6:30 PM...was crying my ass off by the end of the day for food/drink...i should have prepared in advance...since its an annual thing for me i've learned to prepare myself...a week before i start my fast i do this: day 1) no food/drink until noon 2) no food/drink until 1 pm 3) no food/drink until 2 pm 4) no food/drink until 3 pm 5) no food/drink until 4 pm 5) no food/drink until 5 pm 6) no food drink until 6 pm 7) no food/drink until 6:30 pm...

the first and last day will be your toughest...but after it's all said and done it feels GREAT...honest...my family usually has a large dinner to break our fast at 6:30ish (OF COURSE YOU WILL FEEL VERY HUNGRY so you need a big meal) then small meals to follow and LOTS of water mmmm for the rest of the night...

some people like to wake up at 2-3 AM for an early snack and then go back to sleep so they have something in their stomach so they dont feel VERY hungry during the day but i'm the kind of guy that cherishes sleep so much...not worth getting up...sleep the whole night and just handle it during the day like you should - don't give in :)

hard ass part of fasting is brushing my teeth :redhot: because while fasting we muslims can't drink water remember so you have to make sure you spit out like every little bit of toothpaste and water you use...which leaves your mouth dry as hell at the beginning of the day (which sucks hardcore) :worried: but you get used to that as well...it's all about your body getting used to it's new routine...i like fasting because it makes me feel like i control my urges and my urges aren't controlling me

i hope something in this long post helps you...pm me if you have any other Qs - i'm sure i can help in some way or another...i'm a 9 year faster and it'll be my tenth come this november ;)

musclemuscle...i think your fast wasn't as successful because you drank water...anyone can fill themselves up with a huge amount of water and feel full...lessening the effect of the fast by alot...you probably didn't prepare for your fast either since you felt very tired and dizzy etc...and was your fast 3 days NONSTOP no eating? or did you fast for 3 days breaking near the end of the day each day? because that is a much more effective fast than just starving yourself drinking gallons and gallons of water

i drank only when thirsty...i did not drink water to take away the hunger...the hunger drove me crazy...I lasted the full three days nonstop

i did nothing for prep....just decided one day to fast and that was it

ok that explains it...a person that has never fasted before just suddenly doesn't eat anything for 3 days straight...your body wasn't accustomed to it AT ALL so it made you feel like crap as a result...

i'd strongly suggest you try it again with prepping yourself a little bit prior to starting your fast...the first few days will feel uncomfortable and crap but after that it will be smooth sailing and you will feel great (not tired or anything - just as energetic as before)

and i wouldn't try the 3 day fast either...i'd suggest a controlled nearly all day fast then breaking it at the end of the day with a good meal your body needs...

i forgot to mention what i'd eat after a long fast too! ...usually a soup to start and then work my way to a meal with a good piece of meat and some rice or something on the side...i'd definitely suggest an appetizer or soup to start as you break your fast...it isn't good for your body to immediately scarf down a piece of huge meat when you decide to stop your fast...a nice soup helps it go down and is very refreshing since you've had no food OR water - in soup form you get liquid AND food and it's good for you too so everything about it is good when you fast

after going through and ED, hunger is the last feeling I want to feel. I hate it more than anything.

exactly sub...i HATE feeling hungry...because then you have to stop whatever you're doing and go look for something and satisfy that hunger asap...thats why i like to fast...because it's a pain in the ass the FIRST 3-4 days but after that you control it and you don't feel hungry...YOU decide when it's time to eat and your body doesn't control you and make you feel that stomach growl and empty feeling

Just to clarify, this isn't for spiritual reasons. From what I've gathered so far the idea is to abstain from all foods for 7 days, not break it every evening with a solid meal. That defeats the purpose. The goal is to body cleanse, weight loss and to re-introduce new groups. It's hard to accomplish that if you break the fast every evening like you're suggesting. Drinking lots of water was also recommended along with a different juice each day. I can email you the e-book I bought about it if you're interested. Actually, here's a link..

yea i know its not for any kinda spiritual thing or anything i was just givin you background on why my crazy ass would fast annually incase you or anyone else was curious...

no offense - not calling you dumb or anything by any means...but reading this site seems like it's just trying to sell you a dumb ideal and trying to make a quick buck off of a gullible dieter...doesn't sound as effective as fasting the way i'm used to...but then again i have not TRIED the 7-day so i'm not really 1 to bash that system that i have not tried...all i can say is that the fast i'm accustomed to makes me feel better, gives me energy, gives me alot more self control and will power, etc...all positive effects...i say give this fast a shot...if you like it and it works everything's good then...if you want try the fast im used to and itll work as well...all up to what you wanna do bro

The layout of the site is fairly lame but the book is very interesting. A lot of good information.

Go buy the book called "The master cleanser with special needs and problems" by Stanley Burroughs. The book is thin and only $6.00

Follow it to a "T", don't try to make up your own version of the fast. You can actually find most of it on the internet but that's no good, you need the wole book if you are serious about this thing.

Spend the $6.00 and learn a lot about yourself!

Do you have a link?

This is something I posted a few months ago which may be of interest to you since you are talking about fasting.

----------------------------------------

The 'Boxer's Diet' (a.k.a: lemon juice diet, master cleanse) you have mentioned is not a diet. It is, infact, a cleansing routine used in conjuntion with a 10 to 40 day fast.

While a short-term fast (4 days maximum) may have certain benefits to some people, long-term fasts as outlined with this 'cleansing' are not recommended. Especially without the supervision of a physician.

Possible side effects:
  • dehydration (sometimes severe)
  • diarrhoea
  • dizzyness
  • headaches
  • anxiety attacks
  • extreme weight loss
  • lower body temperature
  • lower blood pressure
  • reduced or rapid heart rate
  • difficulty breathing
  • gallstones
  • potassium deficency
  • heart arrhythmia
  • build-up of keytones
  • kidney failure (long fasts)
  • extreme lethargy
  • nausea / vomiting
  • rare enzyme deficiency (MCAD) leading to an inability to process fatty acids
  • insomnia
  • coated tongue
  • increased body odour
  • increased discharge from mucous membranes
  • skin rashes
  • gout
----------------------------------------

If you have completed a fast without any adverse effects then that is fine. But if you are going to suggest that someone else begins a fasting process, especially over a prolonged term, then you need to make them aware that there are possible health concerns so that they can make an informed decision. I am unaware if the book mentioned will cover all aspects (ie: health concerns) of the type of fast they are recommending but if it doesn't then the above is something to consider before you begin. Short term may be beneficial but long term requires supervision.

NO Sir
the master cleanse is NOT a 40 day fast. Go buy the book.
YES it is only 10 days then break the fast for 3 days with OJ.

Correct it is NOT a diet it IS a cleanse (the name of to book tells you this) and by definition a fast.

GO OUT AND PURCHASE THE $6.00 BOOK or just go to the book store and stand there and read the whole thing in a few minutes.

Also go to curezone.com and read their Master Cleanse #20 Lemonade Diet Fasting Support Forum.

http://curezone.com/forums/f.asp?f=100075

Just watch out for the wacko's who fast for 25+ days.

On this 10 day "cleanse" you can still drink as much water as you want so why would you dehydrate???

For me, my wife and many of my clients we did NOT experience ANY of above side effects. Follow the book to a "T" it really is that simple.

To understand my reply, I should have listed the original thread which I had posted to:

http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=401928

The reference I made to this fast not being a diet was not directed at your posting. Perhaps I should have set-off my reply in quotes. Although you are talking about a fast which lasts ten days, the MasterClense, Lemon Juice Diet, and Boxer's Diet have also been associated with fasts lasting upwards of 40 days but I did note them as being 10 to 40 day fasts.

But like I mentioned, if this type of fast worked for you without any health concerns then that is fine. My posting was just added to make people aware that fasting has associated risks (something which hadn't been mentioned) that they need to be aware of so that they can make an informed decision.

As to the dehydration ... saying that someone on this type of fast can drink as much water as they want does not imply that they are infact keeping their body properly hydrated. Dehydration, when it does happen, happens very quickly and by the time you recognise that fact, you are already in serious trouble.

Hope that cleared up the posting I made.
And please don't call me 'SIR'. :D

if there are enough people who have had these problems with the real master cleanse then YES I agree we need to put it out there so they know.

Also I should note: The real master cleanse has you drinking all day, water AND a very special organic lemon juice mix.

ALSO be very very careful when you break a fast, especially if you are a regular meat eater.

I can not stress enough to buy the real actual book, I know I have already said this too many times and sound like a broken CD. The reason I keep saying it is because after I got the book and then went on the internet I noticed way too many people making up their own version of the cleanse, you can not do that, you'll be screwed.

Only use organic lemon and organic syrup.

best of luck.

Hello, everyone.
I am posting my fasting diary from September.

For the next 7 days I will have nothing but water and diluted fruit juice . At the same time I am stopping smoking, drinking alcohol for this seven days too. This is an experiment for me. I will post my thoughts.

You can read them here

its not a fast when u eat all the meals u missed at one time after 620 pm

I fast twice a year, lasts 9 days.
One day I have only liquids, consisting of stuff like, water, fresh orange juice, and maybe a walnut shake.
The second day, One meal, mostly only veggies with a good source of fiber, and a decent sized helping of fruits. Water the rest of the day.

It's pretty easy once you put your mind to it, first few days might be a little toll taking, but in the bigger picture it really isn't that hard. Feel great after you're done, and for some reason chirpier too.

well, i'm a christian, and part of our belief is fasting, whether it be a daniel fast a full fast, etc. what we're trying to get out of it is something spiritual. i'm only 19 but i'm doing my second full fast, which for me is i eat nothing, and i only drink water for an entire week. the first time i did this i was a junior in high school. if you're looking for something physically, then only expect, dizzyness, and weakness. you will lose weight though, but it's an unhealthy way to lose it. usually by the 3rd or 4th day your body doesn't get the major hunger pains, but man is your sense of smell heightened haha. really it's for a spiritual purpose, as all i do is pray more because i'm not spending my time eating. it's just something to show God to say "see i need you more than i need food" haha. but if you want to do a full fast like this then ok. but just to let you know, the best thing to do on your 1st day off is this: cook some rice in a rice cooker (like us asians do :D) then after it's done, put it in a pot with water, and cook it a little more, and let it become slightly mushy; eat this for your first 2 meals. this is because your stomach isn't used to solid foods or anything greasy, so you're just readjusting it. usually i'm eating a sandwhich by my third meal, but then again i have a strong stomach so i also eat whatever i can find; which snt good lol.

There's no need (spiritually) to starve yourself for a week. A 24 hour fast is just as good (with absolutely zero food or water), and is healthy if done a few times a year. Christians aren't required by God to emaciate themselves in the name of Jesus by fasting for a week or more. The sacrifice of a fast is a good practice, but a 24 hour fast done with a prayer to start off and one to close the fast thanking God for your blessings is sufficient. Fasting is biblical, but starving yourself on purpose for many days on end is not.

Why did you bump this thread anyways?

oh, i didn't mean that you have to do a 7 day fast, i did sorta say "etc" haha. it's just for me, one day or even three days doens't do anything for me because for me, it's too short of a time span, and personally i just need more time haha. i don't know, it's just that i've tried a three day fast, but i didn't get as much out of it as a seven day one, because for me the seven day one makes me rely on God more you know, to give me strength haha. and i didn't mean to bump this thread, i was searching something and i saw it, but i failed to notice the dates haha, my bad. oh, i like your pic.
