Hi! I'm new to the boards and new to weight lifting. I have been trying to collect all the info I can get to make sure I am lifting properly and to fix my eating habit to get the most benefit.

Little about me (embarassed) I weigh a whopping 210 lbs at 5'4". I have been steadily gaining weight in the past 2 yrs due to my job sitting at a desk 9hrs a day, laziness, snacking on junk food and ordering out. I know this is very unhealthy which could lead to a short life. I get depressed and won't go out unless I really have to. Pretty sad when you don't want to visit relatives on Christmas because you are too ashamed and embarassed at what you have become:( I have tried dieting but never could stick to them. I have tried walking and even joined Curves but got bored with it too quickly.

Last week I started to change all this. I threw out all the junk at my desk (actually you should have seen all the people around my desk saying "oh I want that!") reading all that I can, spent $300 to restock my fridge with fruits, vegetables and all around better foods, and lifting (oh the pain in my poor muscles the next day!) We have free weights at home and are going to buy more today.

My biggest problem is that I have found so much info alot of it contradicts itself. Am I fooling myself at my current weight to think I can go straight into lifting or should I try to lose the weight first? I am really excited to be doing the lifting and haven't felt this way about doing the step climber or any other aerobic before. My husband even had to tell me to stop trying to do so much so my muscles can rest.

My plan for the next year was to lift for 6 weeks, 3 times a week and eat like a normal person would that is eating healthy. Then for 2 weeks count my calories and do aerobic excercises to try to lose some extra fat. I don't plan to "diet" I plan to eat better. Hopefully by the end of the year there would be a notice difference in my mentality and physically.

Does this sound like a feasible plan or am I missing something? Please if there is anything anybody wants to add, feel free I'm open to all suggestions.

Hey girl, I just wanted to say welcome, and congratulate you on making the first step and realizing you want a healthier life. :)

No you are not fooling yourself with starting lifting weights while trying to lose the weight, muscle helps burn some fat. Obviously start off light with the exercise and build yourself up, I think your biggest goal right now should be eating healthier and sticking to it, by no means am I saying that you should neglect weights or cardio, but diet should be your biggest focus right now.

Maybe you should concern starting a log here, to track what you are eating, so we can make sure you are eating right :)

Anyway welcome to EF and good luck with your goals :rose:

Welcome, Sumneray! :)

You may feel embarassed now, but every day you take a step toward your goal, you will start to feel your confidence build up. But ya' gotta' stick with it!

I agree with Miss24k, your diet is the biggest step you will take and you need to put A LOT of focus on it. The weights and cardio are a nice perk to go along with it now, and they will become more important as you move closer to your goal.

Start logging all your food in fitday. www.fitday.com. You need to be between 2100 - 2500 calories per day right now and you also need 210 grams of protein per day. Here is a good sample diet. You can also look thru the logs here to get an idea of other foods you should be eating and training schedules.

Good luck with your goals and congratulations on taking your first step!!!!

Hi. Welcome!!!
I was once in your shoes so I understand all of the emotions that you are feeling. Congrats on taking the first step and you came to the right place. There is a lot of girls on this board who are very well educated about health and fitness and they are more than happy to answer all of your questions. They cirtainly helped me with my goals.
I just wanna say that you should research as much as you can, read the sticky's at the top of this board, and stick to it!
Also, you are doing the right thing by weightlifting! It helped me lose more weight than I thought possible(55lbs)...When I first started working out 2yrs ago, I was 5'4" and 178lbs....I got rid of all that and now I will soon be cutting down for my first figure bodybuilding competition that is in April! Anything is possible if you want it bad enough and these women on this board are awesome and very helpful! (Thanks Sassy, miss24k, Scorpiogirl,Daisy, bunny, jenscats, and buffalogirl)
As far as working out, I can say that diet was the biggest help to me along with 3 days of weight training and 3days of cardio/week.
Good luck with your training and feel free to ask any questions that you have!!!

You're going to find some of the best informed people on the internet right here on this board, and they're nice, to boot!

In addition to the stickies at the top of this forum, I thought you might enjoy checking out a couple of other sites -- yes, MM is giving you more information to overload on :)

In the first site, Krista actually has an article specifically addressing the issue you brought up, plus she's got a great weight training website in general:

http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php

Another good website, great for form and planning routines:

http://www.exrx.net/

My basic philosophy is there is no such thing as too much GOOD information. These sites are reputable. I'll go back to these sites and cross reference information I pick up in other places.

The biggest keys, IMO, learn the right form from the beginning and don't overdo it in terms of weight.

Best of luck on your journey to health and strength :D

Hey girl! Welcome to your new fitness life! You'll get lots of help & support & interested ears here! Everyone has a story for how they ended up wherever they are and a reason to get where they want to go. Just like they say about life - its not the destination, but rather the journey. Sometimes you just need to find the right map :)

Welcome Sumneray! Good luck with your goals! You definitely have the right attitude and the motivation to accomplish what you've set out to do.

The ladies are right in that you've found a great place for the support. They're all super! Diet will definitely be the big hurdle and the biggest area to concentrate on but with your attitude, you'll get there.

There's no reason you shouldn't start lifting right away, just go easy. I've seen so many people who go gung-ho for the first couple weeks and then burn out on it or injure themselves. Sounds like you've got a great plan and a good support system at home. Lots of luck!!

Welcome :) And kudos to you for posting. Do not be embarrassed, we all have to start somewhere. You have taken the first positive step to change your life. It's not easy, some days you just want to let it all go, but we're here to help you stay on track. As many people tell me (and it's so true) consistency is key.

Good luck!

Thank you all for the warm welcome! The info and the support you all are giving me has helped motivate me even more. :)
