1st Powerlifting Meet

Thanks everyone.

We are competing again on 1/9. This time as a whole team. In the first meet, there were some "late comers" that just weren't ready. Now they all have put in enough time to compete. Even my 17 yo daughter who can only squat 135 bench 70 and DL 200! Since 2nd grade she has been a softball catcher, so you can imagine the strength change for her - she has never lifted before now. As I said before, there are a few who have never done anything athletic in their lives. My SHW is 5'7 @ 380, and you can imagine what kind of shape he is in, but he shows up every day and busts his ass. He's dropped 7 lbs and his lifts have improved by at least 40%. The other day he texted me saying that no matter what he is going to get a 375 squat at the meet for his 3rd attempt if I let him try. I have no idea if he will be able to, but how to you curb that kind of enthusiasm from a kid who did nothing but play video games and eat Doritos?

Do I get a charge out of guys like my 2, 220's who are both sophomores that can both squat and pull in the 500's and one has a good shot at breaking the state DL record? Hell yes I do! But to be honest, I get an even better feeling about potentially changing the lives of guys like my SHW.

Nice! That's very inspirational bro...props!

Nice job man! I'd chew some butt with those spotter at times. They made ME nervous. Those kids are gonna remember this stuff forever! Nice investment COACH! :)

We've been working hard on that. The football condition program had them narrow stance squatting, so a wide stance, knees out form was (and I am still fighting this from other coaches of "real" sports) discouraged.

I bout some extra batteries for the camcorder, so hopefully this Saturday I can get more tape.

Thanks for the compliments. I like to think I know what I am doing when I am dealing with me, or pretending to be a guru on the internet, but coaching is a completely different challenge.

OK, here is an update. We had another meet this past weekend and basically rocked the house.

Here is how we did. The columns should be read by weight class, squat, bench, dead, total.

142 lb 275 140 300 715 8th

220 lb 465 255 485 1205 2nd (this one is 15, and missed a 525 pull because his hand got hung on his suit and screwed his grip.

220 lb 510 235 455 1200 3rd

220 lb(JV) 340 240 425 1005 3rd

242 lb 320 205 475 1000 2nd

SHW (360) 315 205 365 885 3rd

Girls

242 lbs 235 120 240 595 2nd

198 lbs 205 85 255 545 3rd

181 lbs 135 85 220 435 5th

So far the hardest progress has come from the girls bench. But I think that is just the nature of being a girl. There is no 220 class and that girl who lifted at 242 was only 201. If she drops to 198 and puts 30 more lbs on her total she will qualify for state.

The 2 varsity 220's both qualified for state by a wide margin. The one that got the 510 squat is getting moved to 242 since he is having a hard time staying down anyway and the totals for that class are pretty similar to the 220s - his total qualified him for 242 anyway. He had 560 in him for a squat but I held him back for placing purposes - if he missed he would have dropped to 4th and we would have lost team points. If the other one had made that 525 pull he would have taken 1st by 10 lbs, but had a lock on 2nd so I let him go for it. He obviously has it, he just got his grip broken.

Nice! Their squats and deadlifts are pretty strong but in my opinion their bench needs some work. I would think at state there are going to be lots of 220's benching 315+ easy. Great stuff though. Lol you can tell they are coached by you when their squats and deads are really high but not so much their benches:)

Also, what kind of gear are they allowed to use? Is it belt and singlet or more?
