I traded my blackberry storm for a motorola droid.
When setting up my work and personal (i own my own domain) email, it was as simple as putting in my email address, login name, and password. Done. For the Droid, however, I did the same thing and it said "not valid", then gave me the option to edit the details. For both emails, I played around with the details and still couldn't get it. Keep in mind, I'm a pretty technical person. For my home email, I went to a droid forum, which sent me to a godaddy forum, which sent me to some instructions for setting my pop and outgoing servers, how to enter my login name, and what certificates I should accept. Okay, got that.
For work, I tried the same thing and nothing worked. My IT guy didn't know, so I asked my coworker (hacker) and he figured out that for the server, I had to put in not the NAME, but the IP address of our server/login name.
After 10 more minutes of playing with how my email address should be entered, security settings, and a few other things, I got it. Everything is synced, but I don't know how the average person would do this without spending time on the phone with verizon.
There are no sound profiles like I had with my blackberry. I used to set the sound at night to be loud for phone calls and texts, but silent for everything else. The Droid buries these controls and has one volume for phone calls and one volume for notices, which include email and texts. This doesn't work for me, who's kids will text me at night, but also gets a lot of emails. I solved this by setting the tone for each email account to always be silent so I can go to sleep with the notification sound turned up.
I also synced my car bluetooth with the phone with no problem, but when I went to make a call, it couldn't find my address book.
I looked on some forums and discovered that the Droid doesn't share its address book with bluetooth devices. So i still have to hit the voice dial button on the phone and dial that way, which makes it NOT hands free. I did move that voice dial button to my wallpaper background, because before that I had to scroll to find it.
Speaking of address books... I don't know if the guy at the verizon store did this or what, but when I looked at my contacts on my phone, i had over 1000... EVERY contact I had in outlook at work, everybody in my home email address book, and every facebook contact. wtf. I found the settings to only show me my regular cell phone contacts, and I'm sure this is a good feature for someone, but not me. Also, when i called my neighbor, a picture of my friend's son showed up. When I called my son, a picture of my boss showed up. ???
AND, when i'm talking, if my cheek or earring hits the screen and presses a number, it mutes the phone. I had a very frustrating call when I figured that one out.
It does have cool features. Bar code scanner, built in GPS, lots of amazing google apps. I think i'd give those up for functionality and ease though.
