Nine South Hadley teenagers charged with bullying. possible felonies.

The criminal charges filed against nine students Monday in connection with the bullying of the 15-year-old high school student Phoebe Prince, who killed herself in January, took the town of South Hadley, Mass., by surprise.

Six teenagers were charged with felonies and saw their names and photos on the evening news. Three more were charged as juveniles.

That's a price for bullying that kids almost never pay. These charges will reverberate in this small town for a long time to come. For many people who live here, the charges challenge a fundamental conception of South Hadley as a nice, ordinary, middle-class small town.

As such, some residents were willing to work with school administrators to prevent further bullying in the future but were also ready to move on without assigning blame for Phoebe's death.

To others, who have criticized the high school's handling of the case, the tough prosecutorial stance toward these bullies is unexpected vindication. They think the town isn't ready to just move on. Now it won't.

IMO it's a shame that these teenagers' lives are being affected by criminal charges. But it is a bigger shame that Phoebe Prince felt so bullied that she killed herself.
It's time to set an example, I guess, and these kids need to stand up and pay the piper for their actions.
School systems can only really do so much, suspending/expelling bullies, providing counselling to kids.
Parents need to teach their kids what is and what is not ok in terms of how you treat other people. Teenagers can be ignorant and vicious though.
It's just sad.

Maybe she did in the beginning, maybe that wasn't enough. You can't blame the victim. It would be great if all teenagers, in fact all people, had enough self-esteem to make it through life without getting picked on, but they don't. That's why someone else should have made it clear to these bullies that it is NOT OK to harass little girls, even if you are a little girl yourself. It could have been a better learning experience for the aggressors, instead of them learning it the hard way.

I don't feel bad in the slightest for these girls, but I'm concerned that allowing the govt. to determine what constitutes felonious bullying isn't something I'm comfortable with. I'm alrright with them running healtcare or checking meat for ecoli, but not with these "subjective" experiences. This has to be handled by the school, which of course is a govt. entity....they are the ones that need to be told to nip this shit in the bud or else expel the students. Letting the legal system come in and put kids away for a couple years is opening pandoras box.

Bullies don't pick on people who are going to stand up for themselves. They target the meek. Expecting people to be able to stand against that kind of gauntlet during some of the most fragile, unsure times of their lives is...well...unreasonable. Teenage girls are terrible.

I realize this is about teenage girls but my oldest daughter wouldnt get ready for school once when she was six...
I asked her what was up because she initially loved school...she told me she'd rather die than ever have to go back...and frankly she had an idea of what death was because that same year she asked me why people would rather jump out of a hole in a building and kill themselves then be killed in the building (WTC)

so further questioning revealed she was being bulllied at school every day by some little bastard

I went screaming to the school about it who initially tried to brush it off as 'kids being kids" until I told them what she had told me....

they looked into it and found that the little bastard was terrorizing several other little girls and several of them were mysteriously "sick" with headaches belly aches etc and werent coming to school
if kids that young that are more closely supervised at school are having that big of probs, what chance do teenagers have?


I vote for allowing the bullied to punch the shit out of the bullies....we don't allow it and now kids wind up killing themselves

My Best Friend Jason and I were the leaders as well as Lucas , well the ones that people went to that is.

We were friends with everyone, but NO one messed with us

They knew we were nice as pie, but also at a moments notice could kick ass

We were a group of strong guys but NON of us fit in....
We were like Rogue beings who were nice and studious in class

and did not fit in conventionally with the typical groups like the Jocks, Skaters, Rich, Preppies, Latinos, Blacks, Asians , or Emo/mod kids.


Hi School was great but people who say its fake or not real, are pretending.

Thus When bullying goes on its VERY real and has REAL consequences.

iggy when you were in teh 4th grade you were just be bullied at school and possibly on the way home. NOw the threats come through text message and on your facebook and myspace page, at school and on the bus. They are everywhere and you cant escape. I couldnt imagine it. my dad was my ele principal, and i stuttered as a youngster.
so of course kids would fuk with me...i didn't know how to handle it.
so i reacted with emotion, would start crying then i'd attack with my fists.
this happened about 3-4 times, each time i'd get send down to the princiapls office,
which was my dad, and i'd get a talking too. looking back he knew what was up, he stuttered a bit too as a kid.
eventually, kids didn't fuk with me, and that rep lasted from ele all the way through high school.

you pay a visit to the parent(s) of the offending party, you give them an opportunity to correct their vermin, piece of shit child, then when they've used up all of their strikes, you catch them in the parking lot of the local supermarket or what-have-you (the one without fucking cameras in the parking lot) and you turn their face into plasma.

This is spot-on. You teach your kid to kick some ass, and give them the green light to do so (ie: tell them a suspension is a joke, just a few days off of school and that there will be no punishment for getting one for fighting under those circumstances). If the odds are insurmountable, you start shit-kicking parents...fuck it, it's your DUTY...get your lawyer's number on speed-dial and do what you HAVE to do.

my crew all stuck together. it was me, zippy, stew, galoshes, and fat kid. we called him fat kid because he had a thyroid disorder and was morbidly obese. man, this one time we went on down to old johnsons farm and gang raped his daughter susie. it wasnt till later on we found out that susie was really sammy. zippy couldnt take it. he offed himself with a tether gun. that was it for fat kid. he decided it was time, so he signed up to run a marathon and that fat basterd had an attack of the heart and died. me, stew and galoshes never bring up the summer of 72 for just this reason. prison style rape isnt a good thing to talk about.

Unfortunately, shit like this (not as severe though) goes on at my high school all the time. I am friends with everyone- jocks, nerds, stoners, etc etc... My freshman year of high school i was a complete douche bag and was one of the jocks, but i hated that year so much and it wasn't me- i basically told the kids to fuck off and quite being douche bags and stayed in touch with some others.

I have a childhood friend who has always been considered a loser since middle school. He has a pretty bad twitch, and last year at lunch 2 of my old friends who are the captains of the baseball team took a video of him twitching and showed it to his twin brother and he felt really agitated. Before this, they tormented the kid for a year and i had so fucking much of it. The guy with the twitch was really nice too. I started talking shit to these kids, and before I knew it they were making fun of my family and we were on the brink of fighting every day. My brother has severe ADHD/motor skill problems and my mom used to be overweight (but she lost it), so one kid brought in a picture of a fat lady and a mentally retarded boy and on it it said "Josh's mom and Josh's brother Zach". It took 1000000% of me not to beat the shit out of him, so instead i yelled this to the girl he really liked but was afraid to talk to her. She was sitting on the other side of the lunch room and i said, "HEY MARISSA. BRYAN THINKS OF YOU WHEN HE JACKS OFF. HE TOOK YOUR PICTURE IN BIO 3 WEEKS AGO AND BEATS OFF TO IT EVERY NIGHT. SOMETIMES, HE EVEN FLOGS THE SHIT OUT OF HIS DOLPHIN DURING CLASS WHEN YOU'RE NOT LOOKING. OH, AND ALSO BRYAN, YOU SHOULD EXCUSE YOURSELF NEXT TIME YOU FART. IT SMELLS LIKE HORSESHIT". This is paraprahsed, but yes i did say something like this and i got sent to the principals office along with the other kid. However, the damage was fucking done and i convinced the vice principal to dismiss me with nothing- the other kid also got nothing out of it though. That day in biology class was the best class of the year.

After this, people still fucked with the kid, but he thanked me and didn't get as much shit from people.


Anyways, on a more general spectrum bullying is barely handled accordingly at school. I have been on both sides of the fence, and i can really say that in retrospect hated each side equally. All that matters to a lot of people in high school is fitting in and that means peer pressure to bully people since a lot of the cool kids are doing it. As common as that sounds, it's unfortunately true. Even if parents get involved, most kids aren't going to stop unless they really get fucking punished and have something taken away that means something to them. I am talking about sports, prom, basically anything that means more to them than bullying.

well pretty much with me, i was a nerd freshman year (video games) a jock sophomore year (football, wrestling, ect), then i became well rounded and all types of different friends. My school wasn't as cliquish since it was catholic.

pretty much people either hated me or loved me, and i wouldn't of had it any other way. I was the leader in the anti-religion movement. lol
