Physical Education in Public Schools

With the number of obese kids on the rise I think schools should put more emphasis on physical education. When I was in school 18 years ago, physical education was a joke. Nobody actually got a good workout. By the time the teacher took role the class was half way over. I also think that sports should be expanded to add more junior varsity teams. There are many kids who would like to participate in a sport but lack the talent to play on the varsity squad.

Thoughts?

We don't do government very well. Considering how badly our physical education programs have failed, how do you think our classroom-style education has done?

You can see the result of one, but the other result is largely hidden.

I enjoyed the break P.E. provided from the daily academic rigors conducted in the classrooms.

It's the communal same gendered showers after P.E. I never fully adjusted to.

just sayin'

If by "P.E." you mean your male gym teacher making you tuck your genetalia between your legs and sing "I am woman, hear me roar", then yes, I believe you.

The "communal" arrangement in boot camp that included pinching off one without the privacy of a stall was pretty unsettling too.

just sayin'

I was gonna ask but then scrolled down

"and you enlisted?"

I had the hottest water in basic too btw...IDK why everyone bitches....this might of been cuz I took showers after fireguard at 2 amish

I'm only talking phys-ed on this thread. Since our phys-ed has failed, it needs to be fixed. We could start hiring certified trainers to teach the classes. Give the students cardio and muscle building exercises. We could make it a requirement to take phys-ed daily throughout the entire school year. As I said, we could offer more after school sports for those that want to play but can't make the varsity teams.

I remember one sad incident when I was in Jr. High school. One of my friends weighed 350 lbs. Once a year we were required to run a mile. That was the only intense exercise we ever did and that was only once per year. Anyway, my 350 lb. friend was obviously not capable of running or jogging a mile. He could have just said "fuck you" and not done anything but instead he tried walking the distance. The gym teacher yelled at him and ridiculed him in front of the class. By the time all of the other kids had finished their mile run, he was only half way through walking. The teacher told him that he might as well be picking his nose and told him to quit.

If I were the teacher I would have told him to walk the best he could and advised him to start his own exercise program of walking and gradually build up to jogging. Maybe pass out some workout ideas from Men's Fitness or something. The point being is that he should have been taught that walking is acceptable exercise to start out and he should have been encouraged and EDUCATED on how to lose the weight. Aren't teachers there to educate whether it's phys-ed or chemistry? Instead the teacher didn't give a shit. Then later we were supposed to do chin ups. Of course he could not do one. A lot of kids could not do one. I would have brought out some free weights and had these kids start doing curls and lat rows with a weight that they could handle. Then they could build up their upper body strength to the point of being able to do a chin up. My friend was ridiculed again by the teacher. This kid had an IQ of 150 and was in the Talented and Gifted program. He ended up dropping out of Jr. High because he couldn't handle the ridicule by the teacher of the gym class. That's just wrong.

When I was in college living in the dorms, a lot of the stalls did not have doors so I know how that feels. I got used to it eventually except for two stalls that could be seen from outside the bathroom whenever someone opened the door. My dorm was co-ed and occasionally a girl would catch a glimpse of you taking a dump. I never got used to that. I also could never approach a girl for a date after she had seen me squeezing one out.

yeah ... the latrine queen (person detailed to getting the bathroom ready for inspection) wouldn't be too pleased if you hazarded his detail at 0200 before a 0500 inspection.

WTF? In the field you you grab an entrenching tool...tell your squad leader you're doing to take a shit and if its an artep or combat situation you have to bring a buddy along to guard your back while you squat and shit in the hole you just dug.

ahhh yes...catholes

the wimminz latrine was always spotless anyway...jus sayin

I spent 30 minutes during AIT in the front lean and rest position because some retard didn't listen and took a crap in the one broken toilet....they all had doors.

In college if construction was going on they learned never leave a bag of quickrete (ready mix concrete) unattended because it would surely end up in one of the dormitory shitters that night.

try front leaning rest in texas in august, for an hour (ok it seemed like it...it may not of been), on asphalt

Education is one thing, but maybe we should stop blaming schools for fat unfit kids & look towards the parents.

You bet!!!!

Except for a few, FEW public school systems in better-class cities, the whole US public education system is a joke, and is probably being laughed at worldwide. Even when I was attending public school in Los Angeles in the 80s, it had fallen to ruin. If my mother hadn't been a military school teacher, and my Grandpa a military academy professor, I wouldn't have much of any education. Public schools are full of kids of parents who don't care, and have no drive for advancement. Further, these parents stuff their kids with junk food to compensate for lack of attention and care, as they're so busy with two careers to pay for a house and vehicles that they can't afford. Add to all of that, the fact that Nintendo has replaced the ballgame in the street, and you have a whole herd of out-of-shape butterballs who CAN'T participate in any real PE class, as they'd drop dead of a heart attack.

My two cents' worth.

whelp, my primary criteria in house shopping is the school system

Ive only looked at towns where the schools score in the top 10% minimum for SAT's and have broad extracurricular activities

this isn't very hard to do in this state tho...but some of the stats surprised me

the town I posted previously makes top 4% scores in the nation, and has more stuff than whats on their calender....they also have a fine arts program thats pretty amazing

as a parent I want schools to do THEIR job and let me do mine

but yeah, a lot of parents are apathetic and too self absorbed to realize raising their children is the most important job they have

PE was legit when I was in school. We played every sport depending on season, and you got to pick from several different PEs.. i.e. weight training, traditional sports, life time sports, etc.

and we had a JV team and freshman team for every sport.. maybe you just went to a shitty school.

My elementary school was good for physical education. We had a yearly Canada Fitness awards where you had to do all sorts of fitness tests (endurance running, situps, shuttle run, flexed arm hang etc.) and you got badges according to your fitness level. Everyone wanted a gold, so everyone tried really hard.
The CANADIAN DESIGN RESOURCE Canada Fitness Award badges

I remember there weren't very many fat kids in elementary school. There was a kid who was a big bully, and another one whose dad owned the corner store and gave him candy whenever he wanted, and uh, I think that's it.
I think that part of it was that our parents told us to not come home till dinner, and after dinner we were out playing all the time too.
Junior high there was an emphasis on physical education too, because we were a "jock" school. We won everything, largely because of Project 4000. We had a huge influx of Vietnamese/Cambodian people (4000) who came to Ottawa in the late 70's as refugees, and their kids were exceptional athletes who happened to all end up in my school.
I think P.E. is definitely a school issue, because kids are IN school for 8 hours a day or so. You gotta give them something physical to do to burn off energy.

yeah...I remember the days of being told to come home when the street lights came on

man I wish I felt safe lettin my kids do that

It's a different world now...
I remember falling out of trees, having huge permanent scabs on my knees from rollerskating/falling off my bike, taking huge tumbles from the playground structures, trying to walk on fences, and generally getting many scrapes and bruises just being a kid.

public schools have zero money to waste. when kids are losing art, music, before/after school programs, gym takes a huge backseat. seriously, how out of the loop must you be to realize how poorly funded our public schools are? read a newpaper every now and then.

you: "give us certified trainers to teach gym class!"

teacher: "please, please, please can we get new books for the first time since 1983? and maybe some pens/pencils/paper for the kids to write on? pretty please?"

Ah but those adminstrators sure do get paid well don't they? Raises every year too! Top heavy...just like all other gov't institutions. Let's not forget that all the money that is supposed to be earmarked for schools (including most state lotteries) usually just make it to the general fund, where it is wasted into oblivion.

I mean those senators, congresspeople, mayors, etc., etc. have to get paid well and get their raises and benefits and huge expense accounts don't they? How else could they do their jobs without expensing high priced meals, trips, clothes, haircuts, and everything else they can possibly not need?

I should've been a senator.

thats the crazy thing. they talk about salary freezes for state employees yet they put in place loop holes for government officials and the like to still get their pensions funded and pay increases while the real workers, the cogs in the wheel, get everything cut back. and these douchebags get their double dip paychecks for assuming multiple job titles while doing nothing for most of them.

having a wife as a teacher really lets you see whats going on. the US should switch from a free and appropriate education for all to the european standard. if you dont like school, you learn a vocational job. it makes me sick that i pay incredibly high taxes for students that couldnt care less about their education and their lazy ass parents who love to complain but hate to parent. the US is crumbling and public education is a big reason why. the really amazing thing though, all of these countries which have much better prepared students send their kids to our colleges which are still the best in the world. too bad most of our kids wont be able to get in in a few years as overseas students take their spots.

Don't forget about the percentage of kids who are undoubtedly very grateful for your support of public school. Kids who are too poor to go to private school, but are incredibly smart and motivated.

By your reasoning we might as well not have PE class in school. That's a valid argument but my point is that if we do have PE then it should be done properly and produce results. To do otherwise is hurting our children. BTW, the parents are probably fat asses themselves.

Send em to private school! :) I am free to buy a house in whatever city I want, I dont have to worry about school districts.

While buying food for Abby I saw baby junk food for 6 month olds being advertised as healthy. It was those Gerber Graduates stuff. I looked at the ingredents. It was basically cheetos for a 6-9 month old. A SIX MONTH OLD BABY eating junk food and snacking already! What horrible habits to start so young. All the moms do it. I'm "that mom" for not giving Abby any of that junk.

That combined with kids doing nothing but watch tv and play video games and feel like everything has to be sweet, you get 1 out of every 3 kids being fat. Like really fat. I only remember 2 or 3 fat kids in my class in elementary. Now they are at every bus stop. :(

you keep missing the point. you are talking about obesity, which is about paretning, not schools. these kids are fat because of what they eat not because their PE class don't meet your standards. 30 minutes of exercise 2-3 times a week is not counteract the excessive amount of calories consumed.

Nutrition should be part of health class.

I think I'm just bitter because I didn't make the varsity basketball team as a senior. 30 kids tried out for 12 spots. I was one of the last two guys to get cut from the team. I would have been a starter on a lot of other teams in the state. I was really upset because at the time there was nowhere else to play organized basketball for a 17 year old kid. I couldn't play on the Jr. Varsity team because I was a senior. There were 18 other kids in the same position I was in. Surely they could have come up with a league for us.

Instead I ended up lifting weights more but I also started drinking a little too much.

health class and PE are two different things. you are all over the place. also, no one cares you didn't make your varsity team. kids get cut from sports all the time. so because 18 kids got cut from your basketball team 18 years ago you think they should have accommodated you by creating a separate league?

you sound real bitter.. have you been making excuses for why you got cut this whole time?

holy dag! slappin you, slappin you, slappin you silly.

Coming from a senior in a well respected public high school in NJ, gym is a complete joke. I just had to take fitness, and everyday all of the girls would do maybe 1,000 situps. One guy would lift and i would usually spot him and do shit with him because i lift after school and cant workout in 30 minutes. Everyone else sat on their ass and didn't do anything. The reason is because nobody likes to sweat in gym and go to their next class all sweaty; it's pretty understandable that you don't want to look gross (especially for girls). It shouldn't be the job of a gym teacher to keep students in shape; as someone mentioned it's the job of your parents. Gym teachers can teach children good habits, but it all goes back to the home. Your teacher can't sit with you while you eat your dinner, and take away candy if you don't eat your veggies. PE should also involve more information on diet. We have health 1/4 marking periods, and diet is covered for maybe 3-4 days.

TimTim- didn't see everything you wrote, but i skimmed it and i agree for the most part. The budget at my school is ridiculous; the superintendent has the 3rd highest salary of any superintendent in the state, and the teachers salaries are unusually low. On Friday, they put up 200 dollar clocks in every room because the time changed 1 hour. That's not even as significant as the bus our marching band has- it must have costed thousands to buy the marching band a bus.

As far as education goes, a lot of kids could give two shits and i agree with what you're saying about taxes. A lot of kids who are going to community college next year (not out of choice) really regret not trying in school, and it's a shame that it takes until senior year to see all of your friends getting into schools to start trying while you sat on your ass unmotivated for 3 years before that. A lot of kids also have the potential to do well if they try, which makes it that much more upsetting for them.

My mother used to throw us out of the house to "get the stink blown off us" and we were allowed in for lunch and after dinner. In the interim we played, built forts and explored.
