Justice Scalia: ‘We Are Devoting Too Many of Our Best Minds to’ Lawyering

I can raise my hand as someone with a J.D. that chose to actually produce something as a software engineer as opposed to practicing law. The fact I could actually produced something was the draw to software over support even though I could have made a lot more money on the network side....at the time.

Before ITE, a T14 JD -> BIGLAW guaranteed $160k starting. To be fair, the truly smart people did go into law (notwithstanding laidoffpwnage of the recent year).

"Producing" something is a rather tangable idea. BIGLAW associates spend hours doibng doc review, just as scientists and engineers do in every regulated industry. It's just a matter of how much you want to get paid doing it, and where you want to go in the long-term.

And lol @ public defenders not doing anything productive for society. Yeah, defending constitutional rights is totally useless.

Yes, the public defender that fell asleep during the capitol case and it wasn't ineffective assistance of council......As much as you might want to think the ideal of "innocent until proven guilty" might actually be realized. The reality is that charged and negotiated sentence is the system.
