Don't take the H1N1 flu virus lightly

broonzy

New member
I am starting to get a little concerned about this virus.

Some people don't seem to think this virus is any cause for concern because most of the cases outside of Mexico have had only mild flu symptoms. Keep in mind that this is only the "first pass" of the virus however, and most flu virus' will mutate and become stronger between the first and second pass, which will be this Fall.
When the Spanish Flu made it's first appearance, it was very similar in that it started in the spring and was very mild. By the time fall came around, the virus was much stronger and in the span of 1 year, killed over 40 million people worldwide. Plus most of those that were killed were between the ages of 20-40.
So we aren't out of the woods just yet. The advantage we have this time around is that "hopefully" we have learned from the Spanish flu pandemic, and hopefully governments have some sort of plan in place to help contain the spread of it.

So what do you guys (and gals) think?

i think it will get worse but we will be able to control it much better than past flu's that were horrible.

its not 1918 anymore...

Sometimes I think people are almost hoping for a pandemic out of some morbid desire to live in a stephen king novel (not you, broozy, but others yes).

I'm not even remotely concerned about it. Even if it gets twice as bad, numbers wise there are a lot of ways I'm more likely to die and I am not going to waste my time fretting about those either.

Damn Dude Relax, its gonna be ok. If global warming dont' get us, some of this flu shit or nuclear war will. I love ya bro, but you worry to much. Have a beer and be happy my man. Ima get my ass on the lawn mower and start cutting grass now, be cool bro.

All I'm saying is that people need to be aware that this is not just another Flu that we get every year. This time people really should do whatever they can to prevent the spread of it. It's fine to say "I ain't worried about it. " But how would you feel if you ended up getting it and spread it to your whole family, and then they all died from it. All because you didn't think it was that big a deal.

I think I will have a beer tonight, it's been awhile.

beer causes cancer

someone's been watching the electronic news media too much.

Actually I've been doing some research on virus's and historical facts.

Its the people that have this lax attitude towards it will be the first to blame the "government" for not doing enough when the shit hits the fan:rolleyes:

better hygeine, better health care

Better hygene is certainly a way to help prevent the spread of it, but it's not fool proof.

Better health care? There is nothing modern medicine can do against a flu strain that they have not seen before. At least not until a vaccine is develloped which will take many months, and then many more months to produce it. It's basically up to your body to fight it, and if it can't, that's it for you.

Influenza likes cool dry climates, so right now its not too bad, when fall comes it will get worse, but I dont think its going to be catastrophic.

broonzy, u need to get out in the real world more :laugh2:

I hope you're right. But I would much rather be prepared and take precautions for the worse, and then find out it's not so bad than to assume it's nothing and it turns out to be really serious.

And which world is that? The one with lollipop trees and gumdrop streets, and people live in gingerbread houses and sleep on fluffy cotton candy pillows?
dood, WHERE do u live? i wanna come check that place out... :lmao:

You wouldn't like it here. People seem to believe that very bad things have happened in the past, like natural disasters and Pandemics. What's even funnier is they think that just because these "imaginary" things have happened before, they can happen again. Fuckin LOL!! I think you better stay where you are and lick on your lollipop tree.

Where, bitch!

We went through this virus in the 70s nothing happened. Just sell more nwespapers and take attention away from wall st who love to steal your money while you're distracted.

Check the number of deaths compared with the regular flu, cancer, aspirin, and the malaria. Hell, check the TB stats in the Continental US.

There's more to worry about then just the flu.

I ever tell you about the fucking "S" on my chest. Have a beer bro, and then toast one to your hommie.

Still not worried. Still swine flu free and haven't been doing anything differntly lately.

day 9 and I'm still trying to finish this fucker off. I hope it gets worse in the fall, you fags need to know my suffering.
Dude for real do you really have the fucking Swin Flu?

by not obsessing and worrying and not being a germaphobe carrying around antibacterial wash, I'm actually keeping my immune system stronger, broseph. You need to chill out about this. If I got sick, I'd take my anti virals like a good little girl and stay home till i got better. I'd like to know what freaking out about it in the meantime is going to do to help anyone? Didn't think so.

Personally, I concur but I'll take it up a level. If I'm killed by a flu then it makes the human race stronger...If I can't survive a simple viral infection then I deserve to die and shouldn't procreate. There will always be survivors...:)

don't believe I've ever read "simple" and "viral infection" in the same sentence before

just sayin'

assisted breathing machines can save the life of people whose illness compromises respiratory function

Yes, and I want all of you to know my pain.
Well even thou your offended that I have kids, I hope you get BETTER Quick. Get well soon, Here I will send you a Flower. Hope you feel better.:rose::rose::rose::rose::rose::rose::rose::rose::rose::rose::rose::rose:, A dozen roses for ya BRO.

Day 10 and I still can't get rid of the headaches/bodyaches, and the fever comes back as soon as I stop my pills.

How da fugg did you get that shit anyways Pudds?

Just because there was a flu virus in the 70's that they called the "swine flu", doesn't mean it's the same strain as the one we're seeing now. It's quite common for flu virus to start in pigs, and then from there, transition to human to human contact. There is no question that this is a new strain.

Just sayin'

Who's freaking out? It seems to me the ones freaking out are the ones that are attacking me for expressing concern. If someone tells you to drive carefully because there is bad weather, do you jump down their throat?

Whats Up Big Daddy? How was your weekend Bro?

Nope...but if someone says, "Your lax attitude about driving in this weather is going to kill a family" (when in fact, it's not even raining outside - but it MIGHT!), then yes...I'd react the same.

Not bad. Had a few beer. Didn't get a buzz though, Can't seem to get a buzz of beer at all. I like teh hard stuff.
Becareful in referencing things like the HARD STUFF it could be taken out of context and used to turn your thread teh GEigh. I only drink beer so I can crush the cans on my head, does not work well with teh bottles. LOL

well, if you believe in evolution, wouldnt concern or even fear of the virus show a higher survival instinct - making those who worry and take precaution the most fit to survive?

Dammit you're right! See, I'm so str8 I don't even think that way. Rnch is gonna be all over that :worried:

Damn him and his geigh thoughts!

If that's true you and I may be the only ones left when the virus is finished.:worried:

You know what that means...:p

i seem to be occupying both strongbow AND broonzy's minds WAYYY to much as of late... :worried:

yeh, you two and the cockroaches.

You know what that means.... :FRlol:
Wait a damn min, you think something like the flu is gonna do away wit da BOW, I ever tell you bout that "S" on my chest. LOL

That's because you're always posting behind us with geigh stuff!
There you go again, never use the word geigh and BEHIND US in the same sentence, Damn Dude.

Not really...because as I said, by not worrying, and not obsessing about germs, my immune system is stronger.

Do you have any science to back up this theory? Not saying you're wrong, but I would think that the opposite would be true. I would think that someone "knowing" that there is a possible viral threat, that would signal the body and immune system to be ready and more prepared.

look at the incidence of allergic reaction to various antigen in children of higher social status and then compare that to children of MUCH lower social status and tell me what you come up with. Remember I said incidence not prevalence.

Chris has just gone MD on your ass, Brutha>:mix:

lol I take extra precaution because Im pregant, but if I wasnt pregnant, I'd see this as a good way to lose 10 lbs...lol no joke

Do you have a link? I did a few searches but can't find anything that specific. Not sure how that relates though, Nef is saying that worrying can weaken the immune system. The only thing chlidren worry about is the boogyman.

no, what nef is saying that making yourself a boy in a bubble will hurt you. I'm off to the gym.

Oh Ok, well I certainly agree with that when we are talking about everday germs and bacteria. But as others have said, in 1918 people lived in less sanitary conditions than today. So they would have been exposed to many more germs and virus' than we are, so they should have had very strong immune systems. Yet they still couldn't handle the Spanish flu.
Because that strain was a new strain that hadn't been seen before, same with this new H1N1 strain.

I'm not saying this one will be as bad as the 1918 pandemic, in fact I highly doubt it will, simply because we are better prepared. But it still has the potential to be bad.

The more you expose yourself to, the more your body learns and self immunizes. Stress also reduces immune response. you can just google "stress" and "immune system" to see plenty of links on that. but here's one offhand:

Flu Prevention | Lower Your Stress: Reduce Your Risk of Colds and Flu

My mother was an infectious disease control specialist earlier in her life and head of her department at the hospital. I get my information from good sources.

those that don't know their history are doomed to repeat it.

The fact that stress levels affect your immune system is common knowledge broldilocks.
