does anyone else not feel sorry for the kenya folks that burned to death?

would you feel sorry for them when they kidnap your family and hold you for ransom because there hungry?
 
They were not kidnapping people and holding them for ransom. They were trying to get some free fuel. They were stealing a can of gas each, a few bucks. Hardly a crime deserving being burned alive for.
 
obviously none of these people would do anything worse...a whole village was gqathered together stealing because they had an oppurtunity...imagine visiting that place? im sure you would be treated well...but hey if they robbed and kidnapped you i guess it for the best since they will eat well after the payoff!
 
bino, I had my left wrist burned so badly in the 6th grade that when I held up my arm, all my skin was just hanging off. I can tell you that the pain is so bad that you can't even think straight. Mine was done with boiling milk and they thought they would have to do a skin graft from my foot. Thank God I didn't have to have the graft.
 
Now that is a pretty big assumption to assume that someone who would steal a can of gas from a overturned truck would commit a violent crime. Regardless, I'm not in favor of burning anyone alive. Some of these people were just kids. Sad.

All I did was point out the irony in what you were comparing. Nobody advocated using buring alive as capital punishment. It's no secret the risks of being around something as reactive and flammable as refined petroleum products.

robbing a place (a violent confrontation) and siphoning gas from an overturned truck are 2 different things. We are talking about whether we are sympathetic about people being burned alive here. Just about everyone who dies in an accident "should have known better" about something. It doesn't mean that as decent human being we don't feel sorry for their pain. Wow. Nothing on ef surprises me anymore. You have no idea what it is like for these people. Maybe they are watching their kids starve because of a drought and this fuel they could sell for a few dollars to get something to eat. You don't know. Desperate people do very desperate things. I find in life that those people in the glass houses tend to have the biggest piles of rocks for flinging.

Assuming the best out of those people when the details available indicate blatant opportunism weakens it further.

Assuming I haven't seen 3rd world conditions and starvation first hand is a very bad assumption also.

I don't have to make an ad hominem argument. I'm arguing the facts as they are. They were stealing gas. They got burned alive. I feel that they didn't deserve it. It's others who are saying "well what if they were robbing or kidnapping." They were not. They were stealing. Now, if you feel someone should be burned alive for stealing because they have it coming, that is pretty severe. Surely, if you saw some juvenile delinquents steal some sodas and snacks from a convenient store vending machine, and the machine turned over on them and crushed them in a slow excruciating way you wouldn't go on about how they deserved to die. maybe you are assuming things about these people because you don't relate to them?

And for the record, I do feel bad that these folks died. In the same way I feel bad for someone who dies wrapping their car around a tree while driving drunk.

it's ok to feel bad for people burning to death, regardless of the circumstances. it's your choice whether or not to give your sympathy to even the worst people. sympathy is hard to come by, especially on the internet.
you can paint two very different scenarios based only on a few facts, and that interpretation will determine how you feel about it. i don't know the details, nor do i care to. it's tragic to me, even if they brought it on themselves and deserved it in that sense. those two determinations/opinions are not mutually exclusive.

however, it is a bit odd to emphasize your lack of sympathy by starting a thread about it. i struggle between caring and feeling for others, or not feeling much at all. it's hard for me to hold onto the idea of life as sacred or precious in the face of what the world seems to be. where you stand on that question, on any given day, is the relevant thing here.

I felt sorry for the soldiers in the war who died from the IED. I know people who argue that 'they got what they deserved' and 'they shouldn't of been there'. Nonetheless, for every soldier who dies, there's a family out there who mourns them.

I feel sorry for those who have burned alive. I hear people say 'they got what they deserved', but there's still someone out there who misses them...someone who needed them...and someone who's sorry that they had to go like that.

Being burned alive for stealing some gas is for sure not justic. A friend of mine visited his father in Africa over the holidays not enough money in the world to make me ever want to visit it or live there. All forign workers live in compounds with armed gards etc they travel with gards to and from work prisioner in there little compounds that ain't living to me. Another friend of mine just got back from Isreal he went to be at his grandfathers death bed. He was in the north so no real harm to come to him but that crazy dude actually wants to move back even with all the crazyness. Diffrent strokes for diffrent folks.

A good friend of mine who lost his brother in Iraq due to a cluster bomb.

He could be lying to get my sympathy, but took (and still take) his word for it. I can't imagine the pain that he's still going through years later.

One of my cousin's just got sent home from afganistan he was injured no idea yet how badly. I have yet to speaking with my aunt or uncle but from his facebook wall it doesn't look to serious thank god.

Your comment seems to have nothing to do with the conversation at hand. The Kenyans were not kidnapping people.... Kenyans being killed because a tanker exploded had nothing to do with your kidnapping incident in Nigeria. The only connection seems to be this ridiculous idea that you posted that all crimes seemed to be punishable by death (or maybe your morals only apply to Africans???)
 
I dont think anyone should burn to death for stealing gasoline. It sucks for them and their families. They broke the law and paid for it. I will not shed a tear for them just as i wouldnt shed a tear for anyone who this happened to, no matter what race they were.

Something stuck out about anyone mentioning that these people weren't actually kidnapping and killing people. Usually when you hear about Africa and the energy industry in the same sentence, it's because people are stealing product out of pipelines (and possibly exploding themselves) or kidnapping scores of contractors and killing them for no reason.

There’s not enough detail in the report, the fuel tanker could have ruptured and fuel was pouring out into the ground, so on that basis it could be argued the villagers were simply saving a useful resource from being wasted and also from damaging the environment. Equally though, standing in line waiting to fill a bucket with fuel from a vehicle accident is incredibly stupid. If they have any sense they’ll get some nice big ‘no smoking’ signs pre-painted for next time.
