BAM! Genie offers you 3 choices

1) Increase your life expectancy by 5 years. (These are actually good years, whatever age you are now, you will remain for 5 additional years, then age like normal).

2) Gives you $5 million tax free.

3) Increase your IQ by 50 points (assuming IQ is accurate measure of intelligence).

choice 2 because it actually probably will extend choice 1 because less stress and rich old guys get more tang then poor old guys. And +50 IQ points would probably make me smart enough to think that life was futile so i would go crazy or something

I'll just be lazy and take #2. Then use a combination of my given #1 and #3 to enjoy it and use it wisely.

good thinking bro! with all that money you will attract tons of women that you can treat like whores!

lol, that's funny but not really when you think of it. How many retards do you hear of committing premeditated suicide?

The self-kill ratio of geniuses:retards must be like 1000:.1 or something. But then again if they were genius they would've figured out a way to achieve immortality and live forever. Wait wtf this is turning into a conundrum.

i wonder if having a freakishly high iq would give you a special appreciation for life unattainable by the rest of the population

y
but does the genie provide some sort of evidence of ownership for the money, to
satisfy the IRS if they start to wonder why some douche just bought a bunch of
expensive toys???
my decision hinges on this info

i love it when people who feign annoyance at overthinking yet still take the time to think out a thought to counter the overthinkers.
fail?

I wasn't feigning annoyance. I do it too. I just always kind of chuckle at it when I start thinking about stuff like the genie, the IRS, "now where did the genie get the money?" kind of thoughts, etc. There's always genie questions. Aladdin genie? Ali Baba genie? 3 wishes? 3 choices... or 3 wishes? What kind of genie gives choices? They give wishes. Branch off into that discussion.

I think I just took the pot or something.

+1 if we are making the assumption that we do not have, or do not have the capacity to achieve/obtain these things on our own in the first place.

You can always have more. I'm not a believer in the old "too smart" argument.

I dont think u can be "too smart" but I guess in this case, you wouldnt likely have to trade your social skills in.... I know several people who are incredibly smart beyond belief whose success will be limited (IMO) by their lack of social skills.

And you probably know a bunch of dumb ones with poor social skills too!

I'm just skeptical that high intelligence translates into social limitations. There may, however, be differing levels of development.

Not at all a 100% correlation, dont get me wrong... But what good is having a gift if you cant do anything with it?

Well the gift can still be used, just not always in public.

I have to wonder how many academically and scientifically gifted people are less socially polished simply because they spend time in other areas. Social skills are like many other skills in that they often have to be developed over time through practice and exposure.

I'd like to claim that I would take the smarts, but no - I'd take the money, fuck it.

b0und (so?)

(3) all the way. With (3), you can achieve (1) and (2) easily.

Yeah, but give me (2), and while you're out, working hard using (3) to achieve (1) and (2), I'll be relaxing/traveling/doing whatever I want, enjoying my (2).

Now who's using their (3)?

:D

Not all high IQ people make sense

number 2 without question

i can make my life better alot quicker in that instance than not taking #2 and going with #1. Plus my family genes are pretty good...all live very long despite having poor eatings and exercise habits (as well as smoking + drinking)

my IQ is pretty high already. i'm afraid of being smarter, i'm already wacky and inside my own head enough as it is

Da Vinci, Voltaire, and Newton all had SUPER high iqs, and seemed to live rich and influential lives

They were rich first. Science used to be the domain of underemployed aristocrats.

But with (3), I can make a heck of a lot more than the money in (2). You can live well off $5M, but you'll need 5x that amount to be a real baller!

brb, being a genius!

with number 3, money might not be nearly as important to you, so you might in fact end up "poorer" in terms of happiness brought by money

Isn't happiness about achieving what's important to you, not what's important to someone else? So if 50 IQ points change your priorities, chances are the increased intelligence will help you achieve the modified goal(s) as well.

yea but if you KNOW you can be happy with 5 mil, the way you are, it would be hard to pass up.

Because with 50 more IQ points, your priorities might change to something harder to obtain, like world peace or a definitive solution to philosophy that resolves every possible question. So instead of spending your days relaxing on the beach, you feverishly work towards an unattainable goal and die without ever finding inner peace

one issue is if 50 points makes you a savant, there are many real issues that they face..

like no personality, or ability to function in society.. most are poor and contribute nothing to the world..

but i think i'd chance it..

#2- Id rather live great shorter then longer and mediocre.

Just because you are a certifiable genius does not guarantee wealth, you can still be lazy.

most people in general are poor and contribute nothing to the world. you really think being a genius makes things worse?

Naw, there are plenty of highly intelligent people who are perfectly capable of functioning in society. People just focus on a few exceptions.

Let's be honest, here. The only people who won't pick the $5 million are the ones who already have at least two or three times that in the bank.

I guess Im the only one who thought 1 was the best option

you cant put a price on life

5 years?

So you live to 95 instead of 90?

Even 5 years frozen at the age you are now...nah, I'll keep on living life. Besides, most of us here take good care of ourselves and will live long lives anyway (statistically).

Im in my 20's so 5 extra years in my twenties sounds pretty good.

I mean 5 million also sounds pretty good too dont get me wrong

I didnt even consider three. lol!

5 years goes by so quickly. With $5MM you could live an easier life so you wouldn't look like you put on those 5 years. Stress ages you, ya know?

$5MM earning 4% = $200K/yr. You can live pretty comfortably off just the interest and leave the original $5MM to your kids.

Hell, I'd trade 5 years for $5MM. We all do that now anyway (trade our time for dollars). Unless you're a Kennedy, or some other worthless trust fund kid.
