The Wisdom of Socrates

Grow up and broaden your mind a little, the bee death thing is a bad scene. You want to rely on S. America, Venezuela, Chile, etc., for fruits, nuts, beans, squash?

How healthy is a country that relies on another country for the staples of its diet?

FYI, they figured out what kills the bees, but Congress, the EPA and the FDA aren't willing to tell Monsanto and Bayer to stop making systemic pesticides (ergo, impacting corporate bottom line). Europe was and colony collapse disorder was almost unheard of in about a year.

How healthy is a country that relies on other countries for staples of its economy (oil)?

Oil needs to stop being a staple of this economy. That's just as fucked up as having an economy that revolves on shit people buy at WalMart and Best Buys, none of which is built in this country. In time a lot of other countries in the world are going to be way better off than us because they have mass transit infrastructures that don't rely on petroleum. Not the US. But heaven's forbid we should talk about raising taxes and rebuilding the railroads. Raise taxes to build better bombs to go take oil from other people though, sure.

Oil is not a renewable resource and I just don't get the denial that revolves around this issue.

Americans need to learn to live within their ecological means and stop sucking the life out of this planet like they're the only ones living here.

Eh, what do I care, I'm not expecting grandkids. People with the hopes of grandchildren, different story. The legacy being left to the future is a steaming pile.

America is in too deep for oil so we need to at least rely on our own oil more while we work on feasible alternatives. We have to open more avenues for domestic oil production which buys us time at least. Instead of playing politics with the whole damn thing

“Eliminating the fear that the world is running out of oil eliminates an urgency to experiment with or to implement alternative fuels including biofuels, wind energy, and solar energy as long as these energies remain less energy-efficient, less reliable, and more costly than using oil and natural gas.”

There are, in fact, “more proven petroleum reserves than ever before, despite the increasing rate at which we are consuming petroleum products worldwide” says Dr. Corsi, noting that the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy, in on record that “there are more proven crude oil reserves worldwide than ever in recorded history, despite the fact that worldwide consumption of crude oil has doubled since the 1970s.”

Is oil a renewable resource?

So let's do a flat tax on every single man, woman and child in the country every year for the government to make renewable fuel investments. If we charged $2,000 per head, that would generate 300M (people) x 2,000 = 600B per year to spend on solving the problem.

So for a family of four, we'd only be talking about $8,000 per year in new taxes. Isn't keeping the future from becoming a "steaming pile" worth that much? Would you be ready to stroke that $8,000 check?

How about a petroleum usage tax? Similar to sales tax on consumers except the government installs petro tracking devises an everyones homes like electric meters, and mandatory mileage reporting requirements for every vehicle. Everyone would have to pay a tax based on total annual usage right down to how many rubber bands each household goes through a year.
Surely everyone who is pro-environment will lineup for the government to track them.

Seriously, people that are uneducated come to the terms that oil and gas should not be brought out of the ground...i would like to see 90% of the people not owning a vehicle...give me a fucking break....also, another uneducated fact that people don't realize is that the oil companies have HUGE charitable and environmental projects plans in place. Most oil companies are very serious with environmental concerns. Of course there is going to be damage done to the environment, but at least they are trying to minimize it, lets face it, they won't stop drilling till there is no oil left. I'm just waiting for one more boom then i'm out.

Yeah here in New York they can't frac cause of all the tree huggers and we're sitting on a huge gas reserve that would bring millions to local economy and get NY out debt but no we can't even do that it's bull shit

They don't know anything about the process they just think you pump dangerous chemicals into the ground and pollute everything

I ate mcdonalds everyday for 2 yrs straight and i'm still alive
Garbage food doesn't necessarily kill you outright, conventional medicine could actually recognize a connection if that were the case. Think more like setting you up for long term chronic health problems that are becoming accepted as normal, with earlier and earlier age of onset, that don't have causes like injury, obesity or genetics.

Like the title says, time for a change. Hell, Nan, you rarely have the same avatar from one month to the next :whatever:

But you've had the same for a while, I like continuity... I'm a creature of habit.
Nan, I've had that same avatar since 2010. It's officially a rut.

I guess that's my resolution for this year, nothing specific just to change some shit up, try to get out of my life rut, even just a little.

well I do finance for a living, and I live in a rural community so quite a few actually.
.

wait a second, you do finance for a living but just a few weeks ago you were clowning me and others for wearing a suit and going to an office? Exactly what fucking finance job is there that lets you walk around with wife beaters and sleeve tats that look like a where's waldo in the middle of a million dildo's?

Because right now that's precisely what's happening. When they figure out a way to get it out of the ground clean i'm fine with it.

I take it that red samurai is only slightly more popular than Java. You guys should make a list or something so I don't feed the trolls.

I completely agree.

And the part I love the most is the inescapable fact that fossil fuels are the cheapest form of power available -- by far. The irony isn't lost on me that the people who are the most vocal about the plight of the poor just can't seem to help themselves from making the poor even poorer.

Fuck it. In some ways I hope they succeed. Let's have $20/gallon gas so I won't have to drive in traffic anymore.

omg can I toilet herp?
I don't know what you are even talking about
If you are referring to my old thread of "I gave my husband herpes" then you're a fucking idiot because that thread was about me giving my husband a stuffed animal called herpes, no actual diseased herpes. Not that there is anything wrong or life degrading with having herpes if you are responsible about it, pretty sure even some with herpes lead a better life than you.

You're operating under the assumption that Redscam can actually read.
