I can't stop gambling

So from my earlier thread if you didn't read it, I went bankrupt from gambling. I put over $40,000 in slot machines in a year, most of it borrowed money. My bankruptcy is finalized but I'm still gambling. It's not as bad as it was. Here in WV we have legal video slots and there's a gambling parlor on every street corner. I used to take $200-$400 in every night. Now I'm only taking $20-$30 so I guess that's some progress. My goal is to get rid of the gambling cravings all together. I renewed my gym membership hoping to catch the weight training bug again. I don't know what I'm going to do if I can't cut out the gambling. :worried:

Sweetie, I went back and read a couple of posts from your earlier thread ... you said you had an opiate addiction before the gambling but what you need to understand is the opiate addiction and the gambling addiction are just different sides of the same coin. You need therapy, a 12 step group, SOMETHING. You didn't KICK anything, you just changed gears and developed a different bad habit and the odds are you're just going to keep swapping addictions until you deal with the core issues of why you're numbing yourself, seeking the rush, whatever.
 
try therapy, try thinking what is beneath it, as MM said you just traded addictions, think of it as a hole in your life, it contains something that disturbs you (anxiety, frustration, anger, repressed feelings, denial, depression, etc) you filled it with drugs and then stopped but didnt addres the hole, so you now fill it with gambling, if you stop gambling the hole is still there! eating, smoking, exercise, you're gonna keep compulsively doing something until you address it and everything is bad when you abuse it, try 12 steps if you are hard on money, most community services, church, etc have programs and meetings.

Sometimes people just need to say things to someone else to begin to get their thoughts in order, the classic "sounding board". What do you do when you have a problem you're ashamed of? Bouncing ideas off of internet strangers is better than not coming to grips with reality :whatever:

I'm at a point in life where I'm extremely dissatisfied with my work. I have a degree in geology but I work a crappy customer service job. I've taken a few classes towards a Masters in Env. Science. Every morning when I wake up I feel like shooting my head with a 12 gauge. That's my underlying problem. Good paying jobs are hard to find in WV and I'm making top dollar for a customer service job but I HATE the work.
 
I can become addicted to lots of things (mainly beer and poontang), but I never understood gambling addiction. I mean, how long does it take to figure out you have absolutely ZERO chance of winning in the long run?
 
I'm addicted to cigars & craft beer. On the bright side, I have a prescription for anxiety medication that I never use.

The excitement of knowing that you might hit "THE BIG ONE" creates a dopamine rush. It's the dopamine that gets you hooked. Logical thinking does not happen.:worried:

Hey bro i have 13 months clean from a very nasty heroin addiction.. H caused me to lose everything.. My freedom (several times), the respect of my family, my apartment, multiple jobs.. In one year i went from having everything to being dope sick sleeping under a bridge, hungry with no one to turn to for support..

Its up to YOU to make the changes you need to make. Figure out what it is that makes you gamble, is it the sense of "letting go"? If so learn how to relax! Is it the instant gratification? Then find a constructive hobby..

The only reason i am still clean to this day is Me, and the fact that i have identified the things about my life that have caused me to want to use... Take the initiative and regain control of your life.

Feel free to message me if you want someone to talk to. If at 24 years old i can figure this out, you can to.

I love to gamble, but i don't see how I could ever starting into a hole with something like slots. You could have at least picked something with more ability to effect or predict the outcome...Like Poker, Craps or Sports betting.


Do you have ADHD?
Are you on any Dopamine agonist drugs?

I like to gamble but i've never really gotten into a bad position or spend money i didn't have..with the one time exception i was running Prami on a tren cycle years ago. Little did I realize, that because it is a dopamine agonist, Prami makes you prone to compulsive behavior...particularly gambling. I didn't lose that much money, but i was so preoccupied with looking up betting lines/reading info etc all day that i couldn't get anything else done. I'd literally just find ways to waste time till the games were on and i'd get that rush.

but once i got off the prami, it was back to normal.

if you're on any meds, they could exaccerbate it

i hate gambling...i work real hard and i hate to lose money...even a little bit of it...i derive no pleasure from handing my hard-earned money to a blackjack dealer...i'd rather someone put a gun in my face and took it from me...at least they earned it.

I go to Vegas about once / year and if I get $100 down on a slot machine, I am pissed for the rest of the night. I hate to throw money away like that. Wife is the same way but if she wins a few hundred, she is going straight to the shoe store.

Weird, it is not like she can't afford the shoes to begin with.
