Hi! My name is Lauren, and I am new to the site. I have been working out for about 2 years, with no real goals in mind. I got serious for about 6 months when I was training for the Marine Corps OCS last year, but when that fell through, I got complacent. My husband is in Iraq, so now I really do it just to pass the time. Anyhow, I have been asked several times over the past year if I compete. To be honest, the first time I was asked, my response was, "In what?". :)

I am 6'2" and currently 195lbs. I have no idea what my bf% is, but can tell you that I would just as soon die as give up junk food. :) I was around 10% at one point, but am pretty sure I am far from that now.

I may never have the self confidence to actually compete, but I think I would like to step up my training and get in shape to be able to.

Essentially, I would like to lean out and really add some definition to my body. I would also really like to talk with other women who share my interest in fitness!

Any suggestions are welcome (especially recipes... I hate fruits and veggies) :)

Nice to 'meet' you all!

Thanks caligirl85! I hope to 'meet' a lot of great women on here with similar interests, and I really hope to get some inspiration to look as great as I am sure the rest of you do!! :)

Welcome to EF. You came to the right place it's a great forum with plenty knowledgeable people.

Hey Lauren,

Welcome to EF! My name is Jen and I just joined as well and I think Donna said it well, that we have some of the same goals! I am not new to the gym..but I want to step up my game and lean out and get some great definition, so welcome!! ;).

Please look through my posts as these ladies have provided some stellar information and it might be of use to you as well.

We should stay in touch and encourage each other on!! I have no doubt that you can reach whatever goal you'd like. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Nice to meet you!
Jen

Thanks Jen! I have been in the gym for a couple of years now, and actually used to be a NASM Certified Personal Trainer a few years ago, but to be honest, when it comes to me, I seem to be clueless lol. My biggest interest right now is my diet. I might spend all weekend on here looking up recipes and eating schedules!

Thanks again for your reply!

Check out Jjtt's posts on my thread. She gave me a diet/meal plan to follow and that's what I'm following! She (along with everyone else) has been super helpful!

Hi and welcome :)

If you're not into competing, there are still so many good reasons to improve your fitness level.
In my opinion the top reasons for exercising are:
To improve your self image and feel really good about yourself
To feel a sense of energy and vitality in everyday life
To have a special purpose for getting up each day
To increase your ability to manage stress
To improve your physical health (heart, lungs, bones, skin)

I understand what you mean about junk food, and there was a time in my life where I never thought much about what I ate. Then I turned 30 and realized that the rules were starting to become different- and I needed to watch what I ate. LOL
My motivation for eating well and exercising comes from a very special place. I have had a dark past in many ways, and I have developed a really strong resolve to treat myself better than I have been treated by other people. I deserve to feel good, and exercising and eating well makes me feel good on so many levels.
I read your post about your husband, and I understand, just remember something-that you will be OK no matter what.
It must be hard with him being away...

JJTT...

You're a great gal. Just thought I'd let you know. I, too, have a dark past with being treated like crap on the bottom of someone's shoes. It took a head-on collision in Oct. 09 that could have been fatal for me to say enough. I do agree that's why working out has become such a great part of my life. I do it for ME. I do it because, like you said, I deserve to be happy and healthy. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone in that respect.

Snipersgirl...

I too read your post about your husband and did just want to encourage you that it will be ok. I know that many times in life (well in mine at least) I have felt like it will not be ok..that life will never be ok...Even now..when my husband (who is my absolute soulmate) and I argue and it's bad, I feel hopeless. Remember who you are. Remember that you are never alone. Remember the things in life that you CAN control and control them! Meaning..if you enjoy working out..work out!! You have a support group here...i'm here if you ever need to talk. life can be great and life can also be crappy..either way, you always have YOU! Hope you have a good day.

Thanks so much :)
Your near fatal accident must have been a real life changing experience. I don't know what that feels like, but I know someone who went through a near death experience, and they feel differently about almost everything in their life.
On a lighter note, the last time my husband and I argued, it ended with me launching a full bag of dried pasta on the floor in complete anger and frustration.
I spent a while picking THAT up...oh it was funny in hindsight ;) I probably would have launched anything that was close at hand- it was just the pasta (we were having it for dinner) that was in my hands at the time.
I can't even remember what we were fighting about now.

Lol. It's funny how it is so funny in hindsight. The last time my husband and I argued he grabbed a protein shake that I had gotten at the gym that was in a styrofoam cup and he slammed it down on the counter. It was like an eruption of purple goo. All over our white kitchen including the ceiling. Yeah purple tends to stain so we are occasionally reminded, and laugh, about the purple dots on the ceiling.

I definitely look at life differently now. My last thought before that guy hit me at 55 mph was 'I'm going to die and wake up in heaven'. So, ever since I opened my eyes and saw that I wasn't in heaven, I've been different. Some people don't understand it...how it changes you I guess...but I can't change it.

Wow you ladies really are wonderful! It's nice to see everyone be so supportive!

I started decreasing reps and increasing weights on Monday... I am using you as motivation to turn up the heat. :)

I will say that as of today, every single muscle in my body is so sore and I love it!

Hey Snipers...just wanted to check on you and see how you are doing? How are your workouts going?

Hope everything is going well. Just wanted to let you know I am thinking about you!

Have a great day.

Jen

Best of luck with your training hope your enjoying it ,
Lol the protein cup made me chuckle . I agree with the support on here it's great sometimes just the right thing to push you that bit further.

Hey Jen! Thanks for checking in! Every inch of my body is so so sore. I have been doing low weight/high reps for so long, I had forgotten how that feels. :)

I checked my body fat percentage via the handheld Friday night, and I don't recommend it. Lol. I sent some body shots to my husband, and, well he's not the best judge because he would make me believe I was perfect no matter what I looked like!

I am going to start cutting back on carbs a little tomorrow, and see how that goes. As of now, that's pretty much all I eat. I don't eat fast food or anything like that, I just prefer pasta and cereal to chicken and fish. :)

How's everything going with you?

Hey snipes how you doing up in here.So did I read this right that mostly all you eat is carbs? Plz tell me it aint so babe!

Hi, great to hear you are getting sore- that's a good sign :)
Let us know how you're doing with diet and if you see any changes...

Zed... Yup.. A normal day for me... Organic oatmeal with a monster for breakfast... Couple of sandwiches an some snack wells cookies for lunch, some organic oat cereal for a snack then about a pound of cheez it's on the way to the gym (washed down by yet another monster). :)

I don't mind eating protein, I just don't like preparing it.

Fortunately, I have great genes, but I would like to see how good I could look if I put some effort into my diet!

Jjtt... I modified my diet very slightly lol. I am now eating ground sirloin with brown rice for lunch, and some muscle milk after the gym. ;) I love the soreness, and like feeling proud when I make gains in the weight I can lift.

I was telling my husband how I had (2) 45s and a 35 on the tbar for my last set of rows the other night, and I was giddy with pride. Lol. It doesn't take much to make me proud of myself.

This forum is great for motivation! You are all wonderful!

Wow!! Look at you go on your rows!!! That's awesome! I would be proud of that myself!!
I'm like you about protein/meat..I actually don't like preparing chicken or eating it. I have to just slam it down and think about other
Things. If I could get all of my protein from shakes or bars I would...but I know that 'real' animal protein is better.

You're doing great! Keep posting as you are a source of my motivation!! ;)

Aww that's so nice! I feel the same way... You are all great sources of motivation!

I am actually excited for leg day tomorrow! :)

Hey snipers dam nice on those rows. You are doing them from the floor right? Thats the best way! Do you reps so that you stop on the floor each time and then accelerate like hell bringing it up to your chest. Of course be careful of the boobs, dont wanna smash em! LOL:google:

Zed... Lol you actually made me giggle. ;) if nothing else, I can say that form is one thing I don't compromise on. I would much rather do a half rep then one with bad form. I was a trainer for a couple of years, and that was always my biggest pet peeve.

:D

LOL chika. Glad that you saw the humor!!

Jeez you're nearly as tall as me and rowing similar weight since I changed my form to proper :shame: so that should make you even happier. Haha.
Welcome to the board, there's heaps of smart, experienced people here who'll help you out if you ask.
But sounds like you're on the right track with the diet altering.
I know the carb loving type.., my girlfriend lives on candy, chocolate, fast food (low bf% though) makes me sad haha

Thanks Btb... I think girls just like junk food!! Some of them are just far better at controlling the desire to crush it!! :)

So... I decided that I am going to start a new thread with my workout progress... I know that sounds a little self-centered, but I thought it might be a great way to get feedback and maybe even possibly some encouragement ;)

You guys are great btw! :D

Great idea, it isn't self centered, it should be a way to help your drive on the lacking days.. Dont want everyone asking why're you're skipping workouts do you...
