The LPGA Tour’s growing concern about drug usage among female golfers has led to the implementation of some stringent testing policies. Some of the golfers comments on the issue may surprise you quite a bit!
Esto 17 year-old golfing prodigy, Michelle Wie, stands 6’1” and weighs a whopping 150 libra. Her pencil-thin arms and tall, lanky frame gives her the appearance of a runway model rather than a highly competitive female athlete. And she seems to be about the last person you’d expect to be trying to bulk up and pack on muscle through the usage of steroids.
But however unlikely it may seem, Michelle Wie will be tested for steroids starting next season along with the rest of her LPGA Tour colleagues as part of a new drug testing program that hopes to eliminate any possible usage of illegal performance enhancers by pro female golfers.
The program will test for 33 different types of anabolic steroids, 29 illegal stimulants, y 20 different beta-blockers (adrenaline blockers) en 2008. The testing will mainly target the drugs that will enhance golf performance as LPGA Tour general counsel member Jill Pilgrim said, “To me, you have to be responsible about developing a program. You don't just throw everything at the wall and say, 'OK, we're going to ruin your career for testing positive even though we have no proof that it has any impact on the sport.' That wouldn't make sense.”
One thing that surprised people is that human growth hormone was left off of the list. But some golfers don’t see a problem with that and believe the testing doesn’t need to be so extensive. Top-ranked player Annika Sorenstam reinforced this thought by saying, “I believe in this sport. I believe in the people out here. I don't think you're going to see anything out here, so it might be a waste of time. But if it's peace of mind for people and if we need to prove that the LPGA’s clean, then let's do it.”
The move by the LPGA to test for steroids and other performance enhancing drugs puts an increased amount of pressure on the PGA Tour to do the same. The best player in the world, Tiger Woods, has frequently called for testing and so have some other male professional golfers.
No obstante, don’t expect the PGA to start any such program in the near future as Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem doesn’t believe that drugs are a problem on the tour and isn’t a proponent of testing.
But when players are fighting for hundreds of thousands of dollars every week, it’s a little hard to dismiss the notion that some PGA players would try to do everything possible to better their game including illegal performance enhancement. Finalmente, the PGA will probably join the LPGA in implementing a drug program just to quite the critics. Even if it isn’t necessary.
