When Sylvester Stallone went down for Human Growth Hormone in an Australian airport, it opened many people’s eyes to how many actors are juicing. And you won’t believe what these people are saying about the guys from the movie “300” with regards to steroids.
People go to acting school for a reason. They go to learn the art of transforming themselves into something they’re not. They want to learn how to become the person they are trying to portray. They go to figure out how they can deceive an audience into believing that they truly are the character they are supposed to be.
For many people though, acting school never pays off in the way that they hope for. They might land a bit part here or there only to fall into the cliché of waiting table or driving a cab in Los Angeles just to get by till their big break happens. But the big break never comes because these people never learn all of the essentials they need from acting school.
Sylvester Stallone is certainly not one of these people. Ever since Stallone busted out with his 1976 hit movie “Rocky” he hasn’t looked back. His acting talents have spanned 4 decades and could very well go on into a 5th decade. Sylvester has become a master at making real, everyday people believe in his fictional characters.
And now he has proved he is a master of fooling people into believing that he was able to achieve the muscular, ripped physique that made him an action movie star in film after film when he was recently busted in an Australian airport for having Human Growth Hormone in his luggage.
Stallone had flown from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia to promote his new movie (op het moment) “Rocky VI”. He then checked the “no” box on his customs form that asked if he was bringing restricted or prohibited goods like steroids, illegal drugs, or medicines into the country.
Not soon after filling out his customs form, Stallone’s luggage was searched by Sydney Airport authorities and this is when the Human Growth Hormone was discovered. 48 vials of Jintropin to be exact. And Jintropin isn’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration nor is it recognized as a true treatment for anything.
Dus, needless to say, authorities were still suspicious of Stallone and decided to search his hotel room. They found nothing and then told Stallone and his entourage that they were free to go. Sylvester Stallone has since produced medical documents saying he was allowed to have the HGH but he still faces charges in Sydney and is awaiting his fate.
Echter, his fate may have already been sealed amongst all of his movie fans. Sure they will still pack theatres to see “Rambo IV: Pearl of the Cobra” when it comes out in the summer of 2008 (he’s currently in Thailand shooting it now). But while fans are watching it, they will doubt that his traditionally ripped physique was attained naturally.
It was already hard enough to believe that a 60 year-old man was able to get shredded beyond belief in Rocky VI. Especially when you factor in the hectic schedule that Stallone had to maintain of filming, acting, going over scripts, and moving from location to location.
As I hinted in a previous ‘Hollywood actors on steroids’ piece, I suspected that Stallone might have been using something other than just over-the-counter supplements to achieve his incredible build. And it looks as if I may have been right. But there’s other actors that may have done a little something extra to achieve their fantastic physique as well.
The cast of the movie “300” featured a group of amazingly sculpted Spartan warriors that would easily be the envy other guys working to achieve such a physique. It wasn’t like there were just a few guys who were ripped like crazy among a host of slouches either. Everyone had an eight-pack and was totally cut!
And supposedly the way they achieved these results was through four months of solid training. Nee, the”300” workout wasn’t what they did either if you happened to read some of the pre-release gossip. The popularized, and mythical, rumor that was strewn all across the Internet was that the cast had to do this workout all of the time:
“300”
25x Pull-up, of meer
50x Deadlift @ 135#, of meer
50x Push-up, of meer
50x Box Jump @ 24” box , of meer
50x Floor Wiper (leg raise from floor while holding barbell) @ 135# (one-count)
50x KB Clean and Press @ 36# (KB must touch floor between reps), of meer
25x Pull-up
300 reps total
Echter, this was simply a one-time challenge that was presented after the cast and crew had been working out for a while. And it was only given to those who seemed like they could actually handle this insane workout. Alleen 17 people in the entire cast and crew were actually able to complete it.
The real workout plan was focused on athleticism and used ancient tools such as medicine balls, Kettlebells, and rings instead of fancy weightlifting machines. The focus was athleticism because the cast also had to be able to do quality fighting. En, instead of providing a massive intake of food, the program focused on cutting calories so that the actors looked like they lived off the land, bij wijze van spreken.
Everything was done together during the training so that the actors felt like a unified force, which was also the point of the film. Any letdowns in the way of eating or training by one person were seen by the entire group. The workouts were all different and rarely was one repeated during the four months the group was training. Dus in principe, there was no one structured workout that was involved in the 300 plan.
The movements done in the workouts placed an emphasis on using three-dimensional moves that would be used in the fighting scenes. And they were very intense too as the sessions in the gym were usually 10-12 uur per dag, 5 dagen per week. Gerard Butler, who played the lead character King Leonidas, commented on this aspect of the plan as he said, “Go until you are actually in fear of your life and then go further. Dan, you do more.”
Butler also said the workout plan put him in the right mind frame for the movie mentioning, “It was preparation, ook, for the mindset of King Leonidas. The Spartans were trained to be the best and why be bashful about being the best? We, the Spartans, know who we are so completely that there\'s no way an outsider can understand.”
But really though, despite how tough the workout plan sounded, could a person like Gerard Butler, who never really exhibited any bodybuilder-type physiques in previous films, get this ripped in just four months of working out? Bet yet, could a whole cast and crew get this cut in only four months using Kettleballs and rings!?
I can’t say for sure whether or not the people from 300 used steroids and I don’t have a box of Jintropin with a memo on it reading, “From Sylvester Stallone to Gerard Butler, with care”. But it does seem very suspicious that a bunch of actors could cram building a flawless body into a four month schedule that included learning fighting techniques and practicing script lines.
And on top of this, steroids and AAS experts are very accessible to Hollywood stars. Why wouldn’t an actor who’s got hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line (or even millions) juice for four months to fit the role? Plus, how could a bunch of actors spend 10-12 hours a day in the gym? This type of training load is usually reserved for bodybuilders who are at the top of the game.
Some people work out very hard for years and never attain anything close to what these men achieved body wise in four months. But even if these guys didn’t use roids, you’d at least think the media and government would be on their butts like they are on everyone else’s.
Especially with the way the lawmakers want to punish anyone who has anything to do with steroids to the extreme and the way the media crucifies any sports players who use them. Echter, it seems as if Hollywood gets a free pass when it comes to juicing and no one cares if they do it. Or maybe it is just that they are caught up in the fantasy that their larger-than-life, on-screen heroes all get their incredible physiques naturally.
